okay i like this game a lot. i voted for it instead of goldeneye, even though the n64 could not actually run it. it was so fun and funny.

it was goldeneye, but with the graphics turned up so it couldn't run, and freed of the bond license so it could give you a plucky roswell grey as a sidekick.

the office-block elevators in the first level are still in my dreams tbh. glass and steel. the night outside. v black mirror. haven't seen black mirror.

found this relevant old post of mine by searching "correctly destroyed observatory"

perfect dark's comparative obscurity is natural because a lot of goldeneye's stature is that of a successful tech demo-- you can make a successful multiplayer shooter on a one-stick console-- and perfect dark was a total mechanical retread coming out the same year as a wave of two-stick consoles (and a year before halo).

but quick list of things perfect dark has: a female protagonist; a sassy roswell grey; a lock-on submachine gun (real treasure in this degenerate hintergenre); a gun that shoots across levels and through walls (lol); some darkly lovely glass-and-chrome art design that puts you in a good cyberpunk headspace (i wish unatco or versalife, in deus ex, had the office block elevators perfect dark's evil corp flaunts as opening-level spectacle in appreciation of your expansion-pak dollar); a remote-controlled spy drone that causes enemies who sight it to exclaim "it's a spy!" while firing wildly; and a villain who at one point threatens a subordinate in words that caused my friend's dad, who like mine was a software engineer at an astronomical observatory, and who came thru the front door at just this moment, to laugh really caustically in a way that haunted me for years whenever i thought of adulthood: "so, the devices we gave you are working correctly? good. because WE believe that anything that does NOT work correctly SHOULD BE DESTROYED!!!"

I really wanted to like PD (I may have voted it all the same), but never could convince my GoldenEye friends to play multiplayer with me.

PD is a real fever stew of a videogame, especially with all the multiplayer options and the sniper rifle that sees thru walls

whenever i read about this one i'm like, oh, can't wait to decide this is the best PSX final fantasy! but i think i literally fell asleep last time i tried it. it was very late.

GT1 was my number 1. It is just awesome.

notable vote splits:

Gran Turismo could've been #13 if GT2 voters had instead voted for it (and both-voters swapped so that GT1 was their higher pick)
Crash Bandicoot Series could've been #16 with the same help (this counts 1, 2 and Warped which I think is 3?)
Bushido Blade could've been 23rd
Tekken series could've been 25th
Tomb Raider 33rd
And finally, because it came up here and I don't want to lead anyone on -- Darkstalkers could've been 53rd if votes weren't split between Vampire Saviour and Night Warriors
There are a couple of other ones where vote splitting was notable but I don't think they would've cracked the top 77 either way-- i'll post the full list tomorrow of everything that got votes

note: the "new" numbers includes all of the vote splits i calculated at once, so some of them may have moved up even more if they were te *only* game that got the gameshark code for "not splitting their votes"
