I feel like AOC has talked about why a public option is risky, I'll try to find it.

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:31 (three years ago) link

btw, going back to yesterday and that tweet from Karen Whatshername that milo c&p'd into the thread and I was responding to:

No, I didn't see anything other than the text of the tweet. I didn't click through to see that it was a response to AOC, or read what AOC had tweeted that Karen was responding to. If I want to suck Twitter directly into my system, I'll join Twitter. I can see how others assuming I was somehow following AOC on Twitter would have made my response appear differently intended. That's a very unwarranted assumption, but natural enough if you live in the political Twittersphere. I can't be responsible for bad assumptions that are not revealed.

It’s not even about being nice to centrists, it’s about making a positive case for why your policies are better (which should be really easy to do because they are) rather than performative self-flagellation disguised as shitting on everyone around you

Holy cow, does this ever need to be pinned to the top of every dem-centric politics discussion on this board. AOC is saying much of the same shit that some of the more (vocally) leftist posters here say but she's able to say it in a way that's coalition-building rather than self-satisfied echo chamber sniping that's likely to turn off even those people who already like 90% agree with her. It's a lesson worth paying some attention to.

OrificeMax (Old Lunch), Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:37 (three years ago) link

self-satisfied echo chamber sniping

this is also known as "posting" and everyone on ILX does it

or at the very least, the leftists do not hold anything approaching a monopoly

It's pretty amazing that milo and silby still can't see that almost no one here is excited about Biden winning so much as Trump losing and that most people simply want to spend 24-72 hours drinking from the punchbowl of schadenfreude before two leftist edgelords take a dump in it.

It’s good to know that you think a Black poster telling White posters that agree with him politically that he’s tired of being told that any incremental change that makes his life less dangerous is de facto bad because he’s not the right kind of Black person is juvenile and childish.

DJP, Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:49 (three years ago) link

tempbanning milo seems fine to me if only bc it he were here this conversation would be even more of a depressive death drive

(i understand that reflects the current path the world is on but that’s also the reason why i thought y’all were real rich for crediting any of his posts with “imagination”)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:51 (three years ago) link

It’s just that there is a cognitive dissonance when progressive politicians have done excellent work to re-elect Biden and then people are criticized for enjoying the election of Biden because it will hinder progressive goals.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:54 (three years ago) link

look if these same progressive politicians do not end up being undermined by the Biden administration and Party apparatchiks I will be surprised and delighted and happy to admit I was wrong

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:56 (three years ago) link

xp
OK but this discussion is happening on the AOC thread partially because there was an immediate effort by some Dems to blame progressive goals for their congressional losses

rob, Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:57 (three years ago) link

(which AOC was pushing back against)

rob, Sunday, 8 November 2020 17:57 (three years ago) link

xp Just think it's funny to lambast people chatting on an internet message board for not airing grievances with and/or discussing political reforms they'd like to see in the US in a way that's as eloquent or "coalition-building" as someone who literally does it for a living like AOC does. So sorry I and others like me that've been suffering with pre-existing conditions under the inhumane and indefensible dumpster fire that is the US's "healthcare system" aren't as articulate or gracious in our appeals for things like M4A or examining the difficulties in passing a public option as she is.

The onus should be on the nation where injustices and inequality is endemic to get its shit together, not on people trying to survive to voice their displeasure on social media and online chat forums in a manner palatable to would-be tone police.

We have no power to make you not enjoy it. We have not told you, from what I can see of silby's posts not to enjoy it.

There's an ILX power of transference where criticism of centrists or Biden becomes criticism of... you. That doesn't come from the people doing the criticizing.

It's just blanket hostility to dissent. Even if you want to throw in something about repetition and cliches, I will once again point to a half million posts about Trump's evil over four years - repetition isn't really the problem, people with different views (that, internally, challenge yours?) are the problem.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Sunday, 8 November 2020 18:14 (three years ago) link

So sorry I and others like me that've been suffering with pre-existing conditions under the inhumane and indefensible dumpster fire that is the US's "healthcare system"

I have a preexisting condition too. I'm for a single payer system. But I'm grateful a centrist like Obama was able to make some compromises and deliver an improvement on the Healthcare system, one that outlawed denying private health insurance based on one's health history. It's a very flawed system still, but it is better and I have hope it will lead to an even better one.

trevor, you can post/speak however you like. Just sayin': while it feels good to get an 'amen' when you're preaching solely to the choir, it doesn't do much to rally those outside the choir to your cause.

The Bosom Manor Michaelmas Special (silby), Sunday, 8 November 2020 18:20 (three years ago) link
