it’s totally fine. so few people sign up that any support is very welcome.

you're supporting them so I wouldn't feel any compunction if I were you, especially if it is in light of financial considerations

Politically homely (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 21:37 (three years ago) link

Phew. At least now when I'm up all night shaking with guilt I can console myself that not everyone thinks I'm terrible.

Oh yeah, and Tracer, I've not got round to your podcast yet - the vibe seems my sort of thing but I have to be in a specific mood for comedy stuff and I'm just not feeling comedic at all atm. I will definitely check it out soon, though.

emil.y, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 21:41 (three years ago) link

haha it is totally the opposite of what all our audience research says most people want right now. instant of upbeat chat, it’s dark fiction. instead of mainstream wind-down companionship it’s satirical horror. and it’s not like there’s any shortage of actual horror right now..

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 21:46 (three years ago) link

but scripted podcasts take like a year to make! we weren’t planning on this

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 21:47 (three years ago) link

I prefer a 'donate' button route but most podcasts encourage a subscription model, which is a different order of commitment given finances and time. I hadn't considered subscribing and unsubscribing.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 21:47 (three years ago) link

If it's more dark than silly then I might go for it sooner. One thing that made me not a huge Scarfolk fan is that I felt it would often go for an overly silly take rather than stay as a vaguely believable alternate world. I've also listened to pretty much every horror podcast available so I will need more!

emil.y, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 21:50 (three years ago) link

well it’s sketch-based so if you don’t like one you might like the next.. though an overarching story does start to reveal itself. will be very interested to hear your opinion as an audio horror aficionado!

not all podcasts have a direct donation option, which is unfortunate because i dont really approve of patreon as a business or giving them a cut every month

yeh it's been weird how many podcasts I listen to have suddenly become "a proud member" of this or that "network" over the last year or so

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 9 November 2020 23:37 (three years ago) link

Listened to the first two episodes of The Sink now - I like it so far. I did get distracted at first by trying to place the voice (it's Liz from Darkplace!) and initially did think it was a little too much of a comedy for me (I wouldn't say light or silly but more "definitely a comedy with horror elements rather than a dark world that's also amusing"). However, by the second episode I was getting much more into it, the world was coming together nicely and with it a creeping sense that something bigger was approaching - it gave the whole thing a bit of momentum, which makes me want to hear where it's going to go.

emil.y, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 20:18 (three years ago) link

:D Awesome. New episode tomorrow!

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 20:34 (three years ago) link

Yes there are some bits i like more than others.. and there's a certain style of British comedy acting that is very hard to beat out of people but we gave it our best shot!

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 20:35 (three years ago) link

I'm still gently bemused our little podcast has found its steady audience -- still growing, we just heard from a South African listener the other day who loved what we'd done. Good to know it connects! And making 20 episodes now is a good solid run.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 20:43 (three years ago) link

Yeah, Ned, you guys are doing great! I haven’t listened to all the episodes, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the ones I have caught. I especially liked the recent Boromir, Faramir and Denethor ep.

two weeks pass...

I just saw (very belatedly) that Adam Scott and Scott Auckerman have been, post REM and U2, running down the Talking Heads, but when I went to stock up on episodes I was initially confused, as after U2 they switch to "R U Talkin' RHCP to Me" or something, but only for a couple of episodes. I did some looking into it, and apparently they did start on the Chili Peppers and made it maybe two and a half unenthusiastic albums/episodes, then more or less stopped, talked about how much they were not enjoying the RHCP run down, and on the fly said "we should be talking about the Talking Heads instead," and then basically started over mid-episode. Which is what I imagine anyone would do if faced with the prospect of listening to the entire Chili Peppers catalog in chronological order, knowing the music would simultaneously bet better *and* worse but definitely end up with a prolonged stay on the shitty side of the scale. Couple of good guests coming up, like Jerry Harrison and Ezra Koenig.

In other Earwolf world news, How Did This Get Made? just released the "Cats" episode.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 29 November 2020 18:33 (three years ago) link

for some reason all i listen to now is back episodes of blank check with griffin and david

it's extra hilarious that Ezra Koening couldn't bring himself to refer to "Chris Fartz" and "Mr Burns," but Jerry Harrison happily talked about how proud he felt to have been in the Beatles, the Modern Lovers, and the Traveling Wilburys.

huge rant (sic), Friday, 4 December 2020 23:25 (three years ago) link

Yeah. "Nice" to see the podcast directly stirred up sentiment against reintegrating ISIS members as well!

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 18 December 2020 17:10 (three years ago) link

It was a very weird podcast to listen to because the subject seemed dishonest

Babby's Yed Revisited (jim in vancouver), Friday, 18 December 2020 17:34 (three years ago) link

My wife asked me if I had heard the Lost Tapes (?) KCRW music podcast on "1980," so I gave it a shot and ... man, it could not have been less interesting or illuminating about its subjects. I heard the Stevie Wonder one, the Joy Division one, a few minutes of the Minnie Riperton one, and I had so much trouble paying attention. Dullsville, imo.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 01:55 (three years ago) link

Same, I think that’s where I bailed too. Just completely uninteresting and un-illuminating.

Good music podcasts are tough. I just added Critical Listening (artists discuss their three most important albums)
, it’s good but the composers and experimental artists are mostly people I’ve not heard of.

Joe Biden Stan Account (milo z), Tuesday, 22 December 2020 02:04 (three years ago) link

The previous series to 1980 was better, curated by Jessica Hopper IIRC

Joe Biden Stan Account (milo z), Tuesday, 22 December 2020 02:05 (three years ago) link

I can't think of any favorite music podcasts off the top of my head, but given how many in depth essays I've seen, read or enjoyed about all sorts of music stuff, I can't imagine it would be that much harder to do a podcast, not least because you can actually incorporate the music. Like the first (only?) season of Cocaine and Rhinestones, that was great stuff. There must be countless others, just as there are a million good movie podcasts, I just haven't felt the need to seek them out.

But yeah, this 1980 one sucked.

I have Hanging Out With Audiophiles (Jamie Lidell interviews musicians/engineers/producers)
The Trap Set w/ Joe Wong (interviews musicians)
And Introducing (Chris Wade & Molly go over an artist's career usually using their memoir as a source, with a guest into that artist - quality varies greatly)
Mike Watt's radio show feed

Trap Set is really great

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 22 December 2020 03:09 (three years ago) link

the Prince Paul podcast What Had Happened Was is great fun, PP is v funny with some great stories
the Joy Division/New Order podcast Transmissions is ok, has all new interviews with everyone but glosses over a lot of stuff (e.g. completely ignores that the RCA album sessions happened) and the presenter sounds like she's hosting a show for children, v mismatched imo

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 22 December 2020 03:27 (three years ago) link

The Good Old Grateful Deadcast is excellent. I am a GD nerd and generally scoff at any official production from what’s left of the band’s business arm but this is great. Tons of trivia and side trips and content that I never knew existed. The episodes so far use the two 1970 albums as jumping-off points. Not sure if they are planning to go beyond those albums.

tobo73, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 03:31 (three years ago) link

loved What Had Happened Was, Paul is just such a genial nerd and enthusiastic conversationalist, and host Mike Eagle usually struck the right balance of nerd/fan and guide to push him to more anecdotes.

Chris Molanphy's Hit Parade on Slate is good if you're interested enough in the month's subject to listen - the recent two-parter on Jim Steinman was fun.

("good" ie as good as a radio programme when radio stations paid people who knew stuff about music.) ((eg that one works with no original research, but say What Had Happened Was could have been 3x better with resources to interview other ppl from Paul's career war stories))

huge rant (sic), Tuesday, 22 December 2020 03:32 (three years ago) link

yeah Hit Parade is good value

You Don't Know Mojack is a fave of mine, but I grew up on the SST Records catalog and am willing to deep dive on many of the outliers. (Mojack's episode on Negativland's Escape From Noise and the extended Mark Hosler interview is A+++)

I can't really recommend Turned Out A Punk or Protonic Reversal as a rule, but they can be great if there's a good guest on. TOAP had Vanessa and Michael from Pylon on successive episodes and Protonic's two parter with Jerry Casale of Devo is totally great.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 08:59 (three years ago) link

I love the Mojack podcast and am working through it slowly, but I've no idea why those guys seem to think we'd be interested in 15/20 mins of shambling back-and-forth about their latest obscure Punk 7-inch purchases at the beginning of every show, it's too much.

Recent Mojack interviews I really liked: Sylvia Juncosa, John Golden, and Scott Colby (had no idea who he was - tracked down a copy of SST 151 and dig it). And yes, skip over the beginning,.

Also from the "can't really recommend unless the guests are great" file: Paisley Stage, Raspberry & Rhyme (paisley underground podcast), The Devil's Music with Pleasant Gehman (her chat with Belinda Carlisle was far more interesting than the Go-Gos documentary)

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 10:31 (three years ago) link

Lydia Lunch's podcast is worth checking in with, but there's a good chance that she'll end up talking about herself 100% of the time if the guest is boring. Was listening to her fan-girl out to Martin Rev this afternoon - hilarious.

― Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, December 22, 2020 5:31 AM

Seconding this rec - also the recent episodes with John Doe and Kid Congo Powers worth a listen. The conversations tend to drift to "partying" instead of music per se, but Gehman is exactly the kind of veteran scenester who you would want to hear chatting with these figures. She's been there, done that etc. (Approx every other episode is about the occult instead of music).

Josefa, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 12:52 (three years ago) link

A friend recently recommended the Murder Ballads podcast, which I guess does a deep dive into specific songs (like Stagger Lee).

lol this is exactly the vibe and yes unbearable is right. I listened to the ilx one and maybe one day I will listen to the other one everyone recommends about the song but it won’t be soon
