honestly if bookmarks had been organized/the delete option had been available / this "bump all bookmarks" option had been available, i would never have changed my username

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 20:32 (three years ago) link

Or maybe just a little bump button next to each bookmark?

DJI, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 20:59 (three years ago) link

If a bookmarked thread is at the top of my screen for a long time and I keep putting off getting caught up, I take that as a sign to remove bookmark.

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 21:16 (three years ago) link

i like to think of it more as a placeholder, almost like a "save point" for reading, where you can resume where you left off

@sic_bot (✔️) (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 21:23 (three years ago) link

ohhhhh I had thought at first that this idea would mean you would automatically post "bump" on all yr bookmarked threads.

sarahell, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 22:40 (three years ago) link

well if we did that it should post "Did we ever get this sorted?", of course.

all cats are beautiful (silby), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 23:59 (three years ago) link

It could be cool as a preference option in Zing to have bookmarks auto-update to the latest post, so you don’t have to tap to reset when you’ve caught up (like slack)

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 01:27 (three years ago) link

Short url support for youtubes would be a gamechanger*

* small but welcome improvement

here we go, ten in a rona (onimo), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 18:41 (three years ago) link

Would it be possible to add a step to posting whenever youtube.com or youtu.be is detected in the post? "You appear to be posting a video -- link or embed?"

scampo-phenique (WmC), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 18:48 (three years ago) link

that would be awesome.
embed for vimeo would also be welcome.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 19:49 (three years ago) link

Short url support for youtubes would be a gamechanger*

no, it's still good to have a very quick option for linking without embedding

@nightKarlMalone (✔️) (sic), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:44 (three years ago) link

Why is link-vs-embed better as a choice the poster makes for everyone vs a reader option?

stet, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:48 (three years ago) link

ah, um, well you see, it's because I totally didn't think my way around that particular corner

scampo-phenique (WmC), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:13 (three years ago) link

I just want to be able to paste whatever stupid YouTube format and get an embed.

DJI, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:18 (three years ago) link

in some ways, i think we all want that

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 22:04 (three years ago) link

embed should be a reward you get for being able to think for 2.3 seconds about what you post, not a default

@RealKarlMalone™ (✔️) (sic), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 23:54 (three years ago) link

also auto-embeds really shit up poll discussion threads, which I acknowledge many posters would see as a positive feature

@RealKarlMalone™ (✔️) (sic), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 23:55 (three years ago) link

But again you can turn them off if you don’t want to see them, or am I missing something? Genuine q - like, do you think that other people seeing things embedded you don’t want them to is changing the nature of answers or something?

stet, Thursday, 5 November 2020 00:00 (three years ago) link

I think we should make joe biden a mod

I can see people wanting images embedded , but not videos. Links to videos are also useful bcz you can open the video in another window and half-watch while continuing to read the thread.

Right now I think it's super-useful for the poster to be able to embed if they mean to, or link via Belgium if they mean to do that - it seems to me to be removing functionality to embed Belgian tubes.

@RealKarlMalone™ (✔️) (sic), Thursday, 5 November 2020 00:10 (three years ago) link

Also switching to all-embed is coddling ppl who refuse to read their own posts before clicking "submit," and I'm in favour of gulags for people who don't encouraging people to consider what they C&P.

@RealKarlMalone™ (✔️) (sic), Thursday, 5 November 2020 00:13 (three years ago) link

please don't distract stet from my much more important idea with this youtube business

all cats are beautiful (silby), Thursday, 5 November 2020 00:14 (three years ago) link

my bookmarks, they're dying

all cats are beautiful (silby), Thursday, 5 November 2020 00:14 (three years ago) link

bump

sarahell, Thursday, 5 November 2020 00:16 (three years ago) link

If I wish to post a youtube video just for a cheap referential joke, embedding is better than the link, because someone can look at the embed and be amused by the reference without having to click and go listen to find out what has been linked.

Alternatively, that person can be like, "oh yeah I had forgotten how awesome that song is" and go to it.

However, as it stands now, if you mess up the syntaxes or just paste a mobile link, then no one knows what referential jest is being made unless they follow the link, which is sometimes just too much trouble.

Accordingly I humbly ask that the code accommodate multiple modes of pasting a YT link, because it's tough to remember whether it's watch question mark vee equals or equals vee watch question mark and hand-code appropriately.

That's my case and I am sticking to it.

here we go, ten in a rona (onimo), Thursday, 5 November 2020 00:36 (three years ago) link

people trying to make referential jokes should simply take screenshots of the youtube video and embed those

@RealKarlMalone™ (✔️) (sic), Thursday, 5 November 2020 00:40 (three years ago) link

Silby, that's like five more steps. Are you suggesting I take a screenshot, download it locally, upload it to a site like imgur (or whatever), copy the url, then put it in my ilx post as an img tag?

By that point the conversation has moved on and it isn't funny or topical anymore.

In contrast, everything on YouTube is already online and can be linked to directly.

didgeridon't (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 5 November 2020 00:40 (three years ago) link

You could write a command line tool that does all those steps for you

@RealKarlMalone™ (✔️) (sic), Thursday, 5 November 2020 00:42 (three years ago) link

> it's tough to remember whether it's watch question mark vee equals or equals vee watch question mark and hand-code appropriately.

This could be eased by adding an example to the 'formatting help' text.
