ogmor came back to comment on Morbs' passing but otherwise has been missing since calzgate, which is a shame.

Proud to be y'alls brother-in-law.

However, I'd caution any of you from calling sunny an honorary seppo, at least until after tomorrow.

pplains, Monday, 2 November 2020 22:50 (three years ago) link

i miss ogmor, we need more imperious posters. glad calz is still here, i literally stood up and clapped when he called tombot a flag-fucker (no offense tombot).

there was a uk-based poster who was very cool and knowledgeable and imperious and intimidating in the bobbins / grime threads. miss that guy lol, cannot remember his name :(. and lex of course.

I cannot think of a poster with more different music tastes than mine than The Lex, but I really missed their posting because it made me question my own assumptions (while also making me batshit crazy).

Lex was/is awesome, wkiw

I miss lex, I follow him on twitter but he doesn't post much

Dan S, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 01:13 (three years ago) link

I used to interact with them on Twitter and always found them entertaining and insightful. Are they still mostly writing/posting about tennis?

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 19:54 (three years ago) link

The all-time lex thread was Taking sides: Children vs. (non-human) animals

lex would not back down one inch, in spite of the pile on. it was kind of awesome, in a way.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 20:07 (three years ago) link

was that some of the last lex posting on ilx?

best lex content - hatred of comedy, enjoyment of the band elbow

Politically homely (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 20:10 (three years ago) link

his cooking skills seem to have come on leaps and bounds, he does artisan bakery and all sorts of fancy shit these days.

calzino, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 20:19 (three years ago) link

the first proper meal he ever ever undertook was three full courses, one of them a souffle iirc -- which was extremely admirably bold given that previously he was like im boiling an egg how is it on fire

from the FB pictures the three-course meal was a triumph

mark s, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 20:38 (three years ago) link

his line was "if i fail at least i fail from a serious level" -- and then he didn't fail

mark s, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 20:39 (three years ago) link

that's great to hear.

Politically homely (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 20:40 (three years ago) link

also this is several years ago now, probably around the time he quit ilx

mark s, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 20:44 (three years ago) link

I'm shocked that the lex was posting as late as 2016!

His long-time beau being a professional chef does soften some of the edges of his Einstein-in-1905 leap - though it is still very impressive!

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 20:50 (three years ago) link

lex regularly posted until 2017, last post in January 2018 with his noms for the 2017 EOY as a slight return. seem to remember he wanted to focus on a book he was writing.

I think I actually stopped reading the ILE for a while as a direct result of the quality of that thread.

Lex used to get so mad when I tried to persuade him that "anyone can learn to cook", ha

The image of him placing a plastic colander over a boiling pot of water to steam something is all-time

Kate wrote a two-word response on the politics thread a few days ago then disappeared again. I miss Kate...

though totally understand needing to take a break from here, particularly the politics threads, which are cesspools of centrist garbage imho. Like get over it, democracy has never existed, you're just propping up a useless myth, the sooner we all understand that the better.

but anyway.

I disagree with your assessment of ILX as a centrist cesspool but I hope Kate is doing well wherever she is.

Same.

table, if you think this place is predominantly centrist then you may want to try interacting with the enemy people outside of your bubble more just for comparison's sake.

He popped in a few days ago to submit a poem to the ILX Poetry Competition and he also linked to a cool article about glow-in-the-dark platypuses on I Love AFL.

pom, oh I have! I think I just hold people here to a higher standard because I think you're all very smart. Your politics, though...

I thought ilx is super left?

Evan, Thursday, 12 November 2020 22:44 (three years ago) link

we're pretty left on average

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 November 2020 22:58 (three years ago) link

There's only a handful of posters I would consider 'super left'. I'm certainly not one of them!

Boring blighters bloaters (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 November 2020 23:00 (three years ago) link

ilx has a (variably) friendly lib-left split, which seems like an absurd superleft phenomenon if you're just walking in from the history-denuded redblue NYT world where bernie sanders is an "ultraliberal" but which don't worry will rapidly become just another dreary fact.

ilx is v centrist

plax (ico), Friday, 13 November 2020 18:29 (three years ago) link

no one in the USA can figure out what is centrist, liberal, leftist or radical, partly because what political ideas are considered to fit each category varies enormously by geography, demographics, and widespread individual eccentricities. The consolidation of media control in the USA has resulted in much greater homogeneity among conservatives, but any form of ideology to the left of FOX and talk radio starts to disintegrate into a patchwork of loose coalitions around salient issues.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Friday, 13 November 2020 18:42 (three years ago) link

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Friday, 13 November 2020 18:48 (three years ago) link

Thanks sleeve, I can't stay away for too long. I'm also glad there's another left person with whom I get along on a regular basis, which I can't say for some others lol, even as much as I agree with them.

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Friday, 13 November 2020 18:54 (three years ago) link

Labeling other people is aggressively rude, table. I'm sure you love it when others do that to you.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Friday, 13 November 2020 18:56 (three years ago) link

i've never considered being labeled rude. i think regarding at as rude means a person has a huge ego tbh.

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Friday, 13 November 2020 18:58 (three years ago) link

Labelling someone a centrist is only rude if you consider being a centrist bad, though.

scampus fugit (gyac), Friday, 13 November 2020 19:02 (three years ago) link

i've never considered being labeled rude.

Ask table how he feels about centrists.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Friday, 13 November 2020 19:05 (three years ago) link

labeling someone a centrist is always rude because everyone who’s not a centrist thinks being a centrist is bad and centrists think being an anythingist is bad

difficult listening hour, Friday, 13 November 2020 19:07 (three years ago) link

pomenitul, Friday, 13 November 2020 19:18 (three years ago) link

ah, but there is a difference between whether I am being rude to you and whether you give a fuck that I'm being rude. f'rinstance, that was an asshole thing to say, but you knew that and so wouldn't object to my pointing it out.
