I've seen a lot of stories about business boarding up their windows in anticipation of mass riots on Tuesday. What exactly is the scenario they are expecting that would lead to this?

The president has said for months that if he doesn't win it's because of election fraud. He told the Proud Boys to stand by. He has a lot of well-armed and fanatical supporters. If the Proud Boys and those supporters turn out in force, so will counter protestors. Shit, if it looks like Trump went down in flames there will be plenty of street celebrations the Trumpist thugs will want to disrupt by breaking some heads.

It doesn't take a very large percentage of the US population for there to be several hundred thousand people surging around. From both sides. But tha police are not exactly a calming influence or even a neutral one.

As long as I continue to live and work where I do, my idealism remains uncurdled, which is probably why my tolerance for unvarnished cynicism is so low.

Those of us with some discretionary income definitely should be upping our giving game, both political and charitable. I think this year our household is going to achieve the 'tithing' standard of 10% of AGI.

i've probably hit $500 or so of donations, which isn't a lot, but is way more than I've donated to causes before.

My suggestion is simply to determine a rolling monthly donation per what you can contribute, identify groups you wish to assist and set up the auto payments. Then it’s part of your monthly budget and you can add more as needed. Been doing it that way for years.
