hit me with some Connery deep cuts. Beyond the Bond films, Marnie, and a couple legacy roles from the 90s, I don't know of much. a friend of mine sent me a picture of a poster of some western he was in that she really liked. I know about Zardoz but Boorman is pretty chilly and kinda boring imo lol

The Man Who Would Be King is the poster she sent me

flappy bird, Sunday, 1 November 2020 04:16 (three years ago) link

damn, news that I subconsciously realized was coming for a while, but it still hurts a lot.

I've thought about it here and there, as well as with his contemporaneous retiree Gene Hackman, who's also 90. That'll be a sad day.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 1 November 2020 04:21 (three years ago) link

xp you should watch that.

visiting, Sunday, 1 November 2020 04:22 (three years ago) link

yeah, Man Who Would Be King is a banger flappy. more talk over here: The Sean Connery Poll

edited for dog profanity (sic), Sunday, 1 November 2020 04:57 (three years ago) link

the man who would be king isn't really a western unless you mean like idk "western" afghanistan or the "wild frontier" of the british empire or some shit

Head 'em off at the Khyber Pass.

x-post

How did I not dig into gospel great Rance Allen's singing and guitar playing till now. Some great video footage out there from Wattstax through recent years. I think he stopped playing guitar awhile ago, but his vocals could go deep and low as well as falsetto high

curmudgeon, Sunday, 1 November 2020 18:08 (three years ago) link

I’m actually super bummed about this. In the age of click-bate and auto-generated articles, will we ever see a writer like this again?

tbh I think the guy was a fucking waste of space. It makes me feel old remembering watching Porterhouse Blue as a kid, with him playing a "young student".

calzino, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 13:15 (three years ago) link

Although he was probably in his late 30's

calzino, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 13:16 (three years ago) link

He was really great in Stella Street, and I loved him on Whose Line as a kid.

I was referring to his very vocal support of UKIP more than his work, which I can't stand either tbh!

calzino, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 13:19 (three years ago) link

A complete arse and about as funny as Keir Starmer but RIP nonetheless, 67 is too young.

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 13:22 (three years ago) link

He was a Ukipper? Fucking hell!

Not many actors have played Harold Wilson AND Ted Heath on the big screen.

TIL that hensley's three bands before UH were called:
• Head Machine
• Toe Fat
• Weed

off to spotify in his honour

mark s, Thursday, 5 November 2020 13:45 (three years ago) link

He was in The Gods too.

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 November 2020 13:47 (three years ago) link

Toe Fat LP cover is such a cursed image

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 5 November 2020 13:49 (three years ago) link

the gods isn't funny in the context of that list tho

mark s, Thursday, 5 November 2020 13:53 (three years ago) link

He was a busy boy pre-UH.

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 November 2020 13:55 (three years ago) link

Once you got past the album covers, Toe Fat were pretty good.

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 5 November 2020 13:57 (three years ago) link

What with Lee Kerslake dying the other month too, this leaves Mick Box as the only survivor of the 'classic' Heep line-up, depending on whether you think they had one. Anyway this is probably Ken's finest moment:

excellent herbert van thal pan horror vibe there

mark s, Thursday, 5 November 2020 14:11 (three years ago) link

Toe Fat was actually an attempt to devise the most disgusting group name possible. They might have been successful, at least before punk.

they were both in madness of king george together, right?

Change Display Name: (stevie), Friday, 6 November 2020 14:48 (three years ago) link

Maybe that's why I confuse him with Geoffrey Rush (who was in the King's Speech).

Madchen, Friday, 6 November 2020 14:50 (three years ago) link

pretty sure Palmer isn't in Madness of King George but haven't fact-checked

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 November 2020 14:53 (three years ago) link
