I only regret that there is but one labour party for me to have quit.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 29 October 2020 14:30 (three years ago) link

I have just finally quit the Labour party.

chap, Thursday, 29 October 2020 14:49 (three years ago) link

last one out's a meeeelt

imago, Thursday, 29 October 2020 14:49 (three years ago) link

xp to Daniel
Same.

Having said that, Jewdas, who are my heroes atm, present a decent, and inspiring case here:

For everyone tearing their hair out or their membership cards up, we want you to look at this image. The old adage that you get conservative with age only applies to babyboomers and their kids. The rest of us are what Israel might call a "demographic timebomb". pic.twitter.com/fkcoMa9Hem

that's a nice thread

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 29 October 2020 14:55 (three years ago) link

Definitely feel like if a viable alternative to labour doesn't appear now, it never will

plax (ico), Thursday, 29 October 2020 14:56 (three years ago) link

lol @ jewdas quoting the ira tho

plax (ico), Thursday, 29 October 2020 14:57 (three years ago) link

"viable" is the big issue isn't it? no left-oriented political party starting from scratch is going to be able to get the access to media and etc to mount a meaningful challenge in parliamentary elections any time soon. and i have to say that any left-oriented party has to run the gauntlet of wresting itself from the usual dipshit Stalinists and etc

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 29 October 2020 15:04 (three years ago) link

well, there you go then

plax (ico), Thursday, 29 October 2020 15:29 (three years ago) link

i guess the answer is "never"

plax (ico), Thursday, 29 October 2020 15:29 (three years ago) link

I wouldn't say never now tho, UK political processes feel exceptionally broken

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 29 October 2020 15:35 (three years ago) link

Jewdas's graph kind of skipping around the conservatism of Gen X, isn't it?

Gab B. Nebsit (wins), Thursday, 29 October 2020 18:14 (three years ago) link

I bet it wasn't all boomers and gen X'ers in the membership that melted like butter over that shitty Starmer vid back in January and voted for the twat.

calzino, Thursday, 29 October 2020 18:23 (three years ago) link

God, if I'd remembered to send in my "stop giving any of my union subs to the Labour Party" form three months ago it could have been processed by Christmas

hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 29 October 2020 18:30 (three years ago) link

Did send my NEC ballot, like a good boy

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 12 November 2020 12:23 (three years ago) link

The results of @UKLabour NEC elections are being delayed from lunchtime to (approx) teatime as some people who were ineligble to vote appear to have done so and this is being addressed. I have no sense, though, that any faction is about to hire Guiliani

Update: The chair, co-secretary and a number of other members in Bristol West Labour have been suspended from the party: https://t.co/GTfALr1QHV

— LabourList (@LabourList) November 13, 2020

Local parties were warned by general secretary David Evans not to “have discussions about, or pass motions in relation to any aspect of individual disciplinary cases” in an email to local officers last week.

The guidance stated that the party would “not hesitate to take appropriate action – including against individual members” if it considered that the advice had not been adhered to.

....

But McLaughlin told LabourList: “The anti-democratic suspension of Jeremy Corbyn has, rightly, been a topic of huge debate within the party.

“Because of this it is absolutely right that members should be able to have their say, as Keir Starmer does in every interview he gives.”

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Friday, 13 November 2020 10:29 (three years ago) link

I've written off the party and am past the point of caring about right-wing purges and wotnot, thankfully because if I was still a concerned Labour member I might genuinely be getting high blood pressure from ranting about this arsehole. As it is now, I've achieved a reasonable distance and acceptance of events, where I can let thingss pass calmly + coolly observe this dismal jerkoff dying a slow political death, and witness him slowly fading into the obscurity the cunt richly deserves. With still a bit of Grrr! but not enough to give me high blood pressure.

calzino, Friday, 13 November 2020 10:32 (three years ago) link

(1)So this is why Labour NEC election results are late: HQ Officials are obsessively combing through the ballot to see if they can cancel votes of members who sent angry "I resign" emails over Corbyn suspension After they were given a vote, but before they actually cast the Vote

Five for the left. Was always a stitch up.

The following candidates have been elected as CLP representatives to the National Executive Committee:

• Luke Akehurst
• Johanna Baxter
• Ann Black
• Gemma Bolton
• Yasmine Dar
• Nadia Jama
• Gurinder Singh Josan
• Laura Pidcock
• Mish Rahman

Luke fucking Akehurst back on the NEC!

thousands of souls chanting "stay and fight" in weary unison, shovelling their hopes and dreams into a giant furnace with HER MAJESTY'S LOYAL OPPOSITION in giant letters on the side, slowly filling the room with poisonous smoke

— Rory Scothorne (@shirkerism) November 13, 2020

calzino, Friday, 13 November 2020 18:57 (three years ago) link

i am fully sympathetic to both sides of the "stay and fight" vs "fuck this joek party" divide tbh

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 November 2020 18:58 (three years ago) link

Momentum text suggested to rank them on the ballot as: Bolton, Rahman, Jama, Henderson, Dar, Pidcock

nashwan, Friday, 13 November 2020 19:08 (three years ago) link

when i saw Pidcock's name i had a weird flash of "oh yeah you exist"

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 November 2020 19:09 (three years ago) link

There’ll be at least one ilx poster who’ll be pleased about Pidcock

scampus fugit (gyac), Friday, 13 November 2020 19:10 (three years ago) link

don't call it a comeback she's been here for months

nashwan, Friday, 13 November 2020 19:10 (three years ago) link

iirc Pidcock is good not bad, or did I get that mixed up?

timber euros (seandalai), Friday, 13 November 2020 20:19 (three years ago) link

she's decent i think, just joking about how she's dropped off the radar since the beginning of the year

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 November 2020 20:20 (three years ago) link

she made some racially clueless comments in the leadership election iirc

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 November 2020 20:21 (three years ago) link

She’s also a terf

scampus fugit (gyac), Friday, 13 November 2020 20:21 (three years ago) link

ah fuck don't remember that, bollocks to her then

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 November 2020 20:23 (three years ago) link

The left chose to go along with her rather than ask tough questions. Very grim stuff xp

xyzzzz__, Friday, 13 November 2020 20:24 (three years ago) link

also she was very Chris Williamson adjacent

calzino, Friday, 13 November 2020 20:24 (three years ago) link

wait what i was still under the impression she was a good guy v sad

plax (ico), Friday, 13 November 2020 20:28 (three years ago) link

what was the terfiness?

Clean-up on ILX (onimo), Friday, 13 November 2020 20:31 (three years ago) link

It was pretty clearly expressed terfy bigotry, not the subtle type.

it's a good reminder really that even if you started a new party, it would attract a massive bunch of unpalatable "committed-socialist" "lifelong anti-racist" "proud trade unionist" wankers with seriously problematic luggage - and just as fucking awful as most of the right-wing of the PLP in their own way!

calzino, Friday, 13 November 2020 20:32 (three years ago) link

no shit, but if this isn’t buried I’ll be surprised.

Over half of Muslim members don't trust the leadership on Islamophobia or trust the complaints process.

Respondents also cited Starmer's backtrack on Kashmir, weakening of stance on Palestine & Labour's association with Prevent as key issues https://t.co/Qc3lTYiQ7E

You guys are ridiculous because I’m more on the left than you (Left), Friday, 13 November 2020 20:39 (three years ago) link

also even beyond the williamson/galloway types the famous hard left of this party is so appalling on sex work that mentioning names would be redundant / a waste of time

This report by Labour Muslim Network is a considered piece of work that must be treated seriously. @LabourMuslims has worked extremely hard in recruiting and mobilising within the Muslim community for Labour, especially amongst the younger generation. These voices must be heard. https://t.co/2mgrP45CTg

Not caring about Muslims is it

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 14 November 2020 13:38 (three years ago) link

To expand, Islamophobia moves papers and votes in this country, I would expect the party to treat it the way they treated the recent report into anti-black discrimination and the EHRC’s failures there. I cbf linking it rn but there was that thread after the GE about how racism factored heavily into anti-Corbyn messaging that has always struck me as an under-acknowledged truth.

scampus fugit (gyac), Saturday, 14 November 2020 14:13 (three years ago) link

Really important for the leadership to take this seriously. Mosques will not hesitate to coordinate abstentions and with the council elections looming...
