i don't know why they'd bother with this. no one cares when melania isn't around, it's not like her presence softens the president's image or anything. there is only downside to this -- the risk of being uncovered.

all great points but I don't understand a single fucking thing this administration does

Logically, fake Melania would be fawning & doting, not yanking her hand away every time he tries to hold it.

“First Lady who can’t stand being touched by Prez” would be the weirdest beard ever.

Which... nothing they do makes sense, so that’s not a gotcha or anything.

The little engine that choogled (hardcore dilettante), Monday, 26 October 2020 17:14 (three years ago) link

no, that's the real Melania, the fake one only comes out for photo ops every now and then

I think the first photo that really looked "fake" came out at a time when she just disappeared for a few weeks (didn't the WH say it was some extended hospital visit or something like that?) so that makes sense. the recent one doesn't make much sense but the face looks totally different to me. then again photo ops is quite literally all this administration cares about. look. I wouldn't stake my life on this. but there's like...a 40% chance they've used at least one fake Melania.

I think they could get away with a stand-in for balcony waves or helicopter walks, but not for an extended appearance.

Trump today at his rally in Allentown, PA: "By the way, nice trucks. You think I could hop into one of them and drive it away? I'd love to do it. Just drive the hell outta here. Just get the hell out of this. I had such a good life. My life was great."

on second thought, the size of that crowd will very probably be covid-impaired, so maybe he will actually see it as a reason to gloat

three months pass...

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/11/us/politics/trump-coronavirus.html

WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump was sicker with Covid-19 in October than publicly acknowledged at the time, with extremely depressed blood oxygen levels at one point and a lung problem associated with pneumonia caused by the coronavirus, according to four people familiar with his condition.

His prognosis became so worrisome before he was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center that officials believed he would need to be put on a ventilator, two of the people familiar with his condition said.

The people familiar with Mr. Trump’s health said he was found to have lung infiltrates, which occur when the lungs are inflamed and contain substances such as fluid or bacteria. Their presence, especially when a patient is exhibiting other symptoms, can be a sign of an acute case of the disease. They can be easily spotted on an X-ray or scan, when parts of the lungs appear opaque, or white.

Mr. Trump’s blood oxygen level alone was cause for extreme concern, dipping into the 80s, according to the people familiar with his evaluation. The disease is considered severe when the blood oxygen level falls to the low 90s.

The fact that he was able to pursue a fairly demanding campaign schedule in late October strongly suggests the experimental therapies he received were obviously effective. Sure, Trump's death would have been more satisfactory, but I guess I should look at the bigger picture and settle for this silver lining, that if Trump was saved from death or debility, it's possible some far more worthy humans may greatly benefit from similar therapies in the future.
