i've been playing way too much Control lately, so much so that I'm sure I dreamt about it all night last night, and also the other day in the pub I had a moment where I thought "Don't hit the triangle button and accidentally boost into a table and kill your mate"

lol

Nhex, Monday, 26 October 2020 14:41 (three years ago) link

fuck! did the ashtray maze last night... mindblowing. just a shame it only takes about 5 minutes or something. i'm on the cusp of completing the game now.

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Tuesday, 27 October 2020 17:24 (three years ago) link

i'll go back to control at some point, it didn't connect after an hour.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 27 October 2020 17:28 (three years ago) link

I think the AWE DLC for Control lets you replay the Ashtray Maze, though I haven't tried it myself yet. I really enjoyed the DLC, incidentally, moreso than the Foundation.

wha! that inspires me to crack it open some more. after I'm done with Fire Emblem, someday

Nhex, Tuesday, 27 October 2020 17:41 (three years ago) link

yeah i played it for an hour and thought 'huh, it's a shooter and the game physics are weird', but coming back to it, it's a real Lynchian/Kubrickian white-collar phantasm with loads of twists and turns. it rivals only Death Stranding in terms of uncanny strangeness

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Tuesday, 27 October 2020 17:51 (three years ago) link

okay, thanks for that. i'll give it another try sooner or later.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 27 October 2020 18:18 (three years ago) link

OK, *now* I'm done Arkham City. It really shows how much side content and other BS there must be if the Batman main story plus the Catwoman DLC main story adds up to ... 13% completion? Can that be right? Anyway, if it is right that means should I ever feel the need to beat anyone up as Batman (or Catwoman, who has more ... personality) I can just dive right back in to spamming the square button.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 27 October 2020 20:18 (three years ago) link

I was going to pick up Miles Morales on launch day for PS4 but worried about stock PS4 performance from the little i've heard... any takes out there that would assuage my fears?

Nhex, Saturday, 7 November 2020 14:47 (three years ago) link

Oh screw it. Had a reward certificate to burn from Avengers, so I pulled the trigger. At least it'll be forward-compatible

Nhex, Saturday, 7 November 2020 19:45 (three years ago) link

i feel pretty certain you won’t regret it

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 7 November 2020 20:59 (three years ago) link

they remembered to put spider-man in this one

ciderpress, Saturday, 7 November 2020 23:35 (three years ago) link

Ugh when I saw that video of the animation I was so close to pulling the trigger but I need to stop buying $90 CAD video games long enough to replace/upgrade my desperately wheezing desktop pc. I think this year's count and plick will include a lot of things I regret not playing/voting for

PS+ 12-month sub for $28 is really hard to beat:

I'm always kind of leery of those mysterious key sites

Nhex, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 22:27 (three years ago) link

same

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 23:02 (three years ago) link

I've used mysterious key sites for ps+ deals several times and it's been fine.

I had issues attempting to buy my son 12 months of xbone game pass where I was sent 4 lots of 3 months which it turned out were all introductory offers meaning he could only use one of them. I then spent hours of effort fighting for my money back.

here we go, ten in a rona (onimo), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 23:14 (three years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Picked up Red Dead Redemption 2 for $20, which seemed like a good deal. I think I'm more or less down to two (maybe three) remaining titles that I want for the PS4, Last of Us 2 and Ghosts of Tsushima, but I've got so much left to play that I bet those titles will be down to $20 or less as well by the time I'm ready for them.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 November 2020 15:58 (three years ago) link

Got so many half-finished games. I did complete Control but got a bit stuck on the DLCs. There's one boss who destroys me within minutes on the AWE DLC and I can't do anything about it. Plus the whole game has an eerieness that I can only endure with that much intensity for a while.

I'm loving God Of War currently. Was a bit put off by how restrictive it felt compared to other open world games: It's a bit linear, or at least to start with, plus you can't jump or climb unless you're in certain places (after playing Control, this feels very strange). But it opens out as it goes along, and actually plays these perceived limitations to its strengths. Plus it's a beautiful game, the acting is INCREDIBLE and I really like the fact I have companions who speak to me all the way through so far, which makes it a far less lonely experience than some games.

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Thursday, 26 November 2020 16:05 (three years ago) link

I had a blast with God of War. I probably posted my reaction earlier, but I honestly don't need a game or system to look or play better than that, and yeah, good writing and voice acting goes on a long way.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 November 2020 16:10 (three years ago) link

If that's the main boss in AWE, did you get the new service weapon form? I saw a video where it went down in short order with that form after I spent many tries using other methods. Also, Shield has gotten a buff so it's a viable ability now (if you were like me and previously ignored it).

God of War isn't really an open world game IMO. Handsome, but I never connected with it.

Basic Chan Ho Park (Leee), Thursday, 26 November 2020 19:47 (three years ago) link

It's the very last fight with Hartman. I have the surge weapon

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Thursday, 26 November 2020 19:53 (three years ago) link

But it involves putting these lights into sockets but as soon as i go in the dark (which is impossible not to) he just appears and decks me.

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Thursday, 26 November 2020 19:54 (three years ago) link

Are you staying in the lit areas to recharge your energy? Because you can basically dodge your way through the dark and avoid getting hit by the boss and with enough energy left to put the energy boxes back in. Also, right before you drop down to the boss area, you can call in a ranger for backup, which I didn't notice and which ended being a huge help as Hartman will focus his attention on that poor sucker.

Basic Chan Ho Park (Leee), Thursday, 26 November 2020 20:26 (three years ago) link

this is an unpopular opinion, but it in a way, god of war, ghosts of tsushima, rdr2, and asscreed are all the same game. it's the same car with a different set of paint. i've played most of them, not a harsh judgment. it just seems like the same game that we're all playing over and over. map/checkbox games, i guess. god of war, less so, because it's more linear and on rails most of the time, but it leaves the same overall taste after playing it. but lately it's become so predictable.

control, i haven't played, and i really want to, in part because it seems to be a well polished game that is not the same

Karl Malone, Thursday, 26 November 2020 22:28 (three years ago) link

i really like losing myself in those same beautiful, open world games, though and i expect that ray tracing will make it seem ever more believable. but maybe for the next generation of the same game, they can just put those advances front and center, a full return to the mid-90s style of ads: "more pixels! better graphics! real-time 3D world!
future tech ray tracing! Mode 7.5!"

Karl Malone, Thursday, 26 November 2020 22:30 (three years ago) link

just grabbed control, very different than those sandbox games

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 26 November 2020 22:47 (three years ago) link

You're in for a treat

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Thursday, 26 November 2020 23:05 (three years ago) link

I haven't played most of those, KM, but I assume the likes of Uncharted, Tomb Raider and maybe even Last of Us fit in there, too. They're kind of all essentially interactive blockbuster movies, driven by plot over game play. Personally, as a solo offline player, so far I enjoy the template.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:19 (three years ago) link

don't think god of war belongs in that group unless the new one is way more open world than it looks, it goes with uncharted et al

ciderpress, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:35 (three years ago) link

i guess it depends whether you're talking about structure or moment to moment gameplay

ciderpress, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:38 (three years ago) link

Control admittedly does kinda become that sort of game, though the world is more hermetic, like a Metroid title. But I think the sheer "personality" of the game is enough to distinguish it from other third-person action explore-'em-ups.

Nhex, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:39 (three years ago) link

xp josh don't get me wrong, about twice per console generation i get totally sucked in and enjoy it a lot. RDR2 was the main example of that for me, for PS4

but at this point, for that kind of game, it's like ok what flavor do you want - samurai, cowboy, space, etc

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:43 (three years ago) link

ultimately god of war is a character action game and i don't think the cinematic excess can change that
control is a shooter/adventure game hybrid which puts it closer to metroid or resident evil than uncharted

ciderpress, Friday, 27 November 2020 00:45 (three years ago) link

yeah control has a lot in common with metroid

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Friday, 27 November 2020 01:02 (three years ago) link

My wife took a gander at me playing Bloodborne yesterday and kind of dismissed it, saying "eh, the graphics don't look that special." I told her the game was already five or so years old, but she should have checked out God of War when I was playing that one. Gorgeous. If I ever start RDR2 or Last of Us 2 I'll be sure to call her down for those ones, too. Though to be fair the not photo realistic qualities of the Souls games are part of their appeal. I keep seeing clips of Demon's Souls PS5 and I can't imagine playing one of these games that looks that slick.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:36 (three years ago) link

Should I buy RDr2 or control? I don’t think I can play both

calstars, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:36 (three years ago) link

i haven't played control, and i liked RDR2, but i think the answer is control unless you really want to be a cowboy riding at sunset (which i did)

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:46 (three years ago) link

why not do both? both are cheap enough right now that you won't regret it too much if you don't like one

Nhex, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:48 (three years ago) link

though obviously I vote Control since I've played and enjoyed that one. i will probably get RDR 2 this sale but i've already been spending way too much on sales this month...

Nhex, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:48 (three years ago) link

RDR2 + Control dual playthrough concept - when arthur morgan goes to sleep, he dreams of control

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:51 (three years ago) link

whenever possible, we should be playing multiple games and integrating their stories

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:52 (three years ago) link

but not kingdom hearts

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:52 (three years ago) link

Cool cool I will get both

calstars, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:52 (three years ago) link

Tesco ('ssssssSSS') are doing games for really cheap at the moment: God of War for £8, Death Stranding for £20.

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Friday, 27 November 2020 13:17 (three years ago) link

i absolutely adored rdr2 fwiw. actually somewhat moving at times and i loved the slow pace and getting lost in the world, it can be incredibly relaxing

global tetrahedron, Friday, 27 November 2020 16:33 (three years ago) link

Sweet, I’m looking forward to it.
I started Control and eh, not sure about it. Played about a half hour - 45 mins, and it’s kind of a pretty generic shooter. My expectations may have been too high.
Also looking for a deal on cloudpunk, I have a feeling I’ll click with that one.

calstars, Friday, 27 November 2020 16:46 (three years ago) link

Keep on with Control. I did the same as you: played about 40 mins and figured I wasn't in the mood for a shooter, and didn't like some of the physics either, but it really opens up (or more accurately gets deeper) as you go. Very little generic about it after a couple of hours

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Friday, 27 November 2020 17:24 (three years ago) link

Cool, will do
Is the protagonist supposed to have a limp or is the animation for walking fast / running just kind of broken?
