I think this was fundamentally different from all the "he'll be undone by political scandal x" stuff because those demanded a certain amount of faith in the american political system while this just demanded faith in the awfulness of a virus. But I guess even that ends up being so much more about socio-economic circumstances than anything else.

The thing that convinced me about the fake Melanias is that in one of the videos Trump literally says "Melania... who is right here next to me..." in one of his Homer Simpson-level attempts at subterfuge.

In one of them he says "Melania couldn't be here today" while a fake Melania is standing next to him! It's a very satisfying conspiracy theory.

the maddening thing about it is that QAnon types do that "this person has been replaced" shit a lot by comparing photos with wildly different angles and lighting and the last thing you want to do is come off like that, but still. there are several photos of her where my brain's first reaction is, "that's someone else". her face is so narrowly defined and she's only made like two different facial expressions. and there are dozens of videos of her just showing absolute contempt for him, swatting his hand away in plain sight. is it really that crazy to think they'd use a fake Melania? did they not just present a 60 Minutes reporter with a giant "comprehensive health care plan" that was just unrelated printouts from Trump's website plus a ton of blank pages?

what does fake melania do when they're out in public? does she hold fake conversations with people who think she's melania, or would they just keep her close to the helicopter so that no one will try to talk to her?

i don't know why they'd bother with this. no one cares when melania isn't around, it's not like her presence softens the president's image or anything. there is only downside to this -- the risk of being uncovered.

I think the first photo that really looked "fake" came out at a time when she just disappeared for a few weeks (didn't the WH say it was some extended hospital visit or something like that?) so that makes sense. the recent one doesn't make much sense but the face looks totally different to me. then again photo ops is quite literally all this administration cares about. look. I wouldn't stake my life on this. but there's like...a 40% chance they've used at least one fake Melania.
