"Every executive lauded Betts for his incredible talent, and while each one of them would be happy to have the Dodgers superstar patrolling right field for their club, the results were nearly unanimous: Eight executives chose Trout, one took Betts, while the other one called it a draw.

The Posnanski article has some interesting points (before talking about the value of Betts having a WS ring) - I didn't realize Trout may be physically slowing down a touch. Just the rigors of playing center, or the foot surgery from a couple of seasons ago?

five months pass...

9 G, .414/.564/.828, 271 wRC+, 1.0 fWAR

ffs

mookieproof, Monday, 12 April 2021 04:26 (three years ago) link

lol he has rendon hitting behind him and is still being walked 25% of the time

mookieproof, Monday, 12 April 2021 04:30 (three years ago) link

meanwhile albert is managing a sturdy -0.2fWAR in 6 games

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 12 April 2021 04:35 (three years ago) link

this trout guy does seem to be good though

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 12 April 2021 04:36 (three years ago) link

just hit his sixth homer, leads the league with 267 wRC+ now. I think it’s funny how every year there’s an article about the people who are going to surpass trout and nope, he’s the best and it’s not close

k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 April 2021 20:25 (two years ago) link

tbf acuña is making a case

mookieproof, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 20:37 (two years ago) link

trout has a .500+ OBP rn

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 21:31 (two years ago) link

yeah his BABIP is over .500

frogbs, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 21:50 (two years ago) link

Seems like every year there’s also an article saying “...and he finally has a decent team behind him!”

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 22 April 2021 17:11 (two years ago) link

I wonder if he and Connor McDavid ever talk. I don’t know if either of them are household names in the U.S.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 22 April 2021 17:15 (two years ago) link

he’s the best and it’s not close

If he keeps going like this all season, no question, still the best. But I don't agree with the "not close"--Betts, Acuna, Tatis (if he keeps going), and Soto (weaker in the field) are all close; if Trout were to go back to the level he played at last season, I think he'd be surpassed. I'd hold off on this question right now.

clemenza, Thursday, 22 April 2021 18:05 (two years ago) link

trout .393/.507/.804, 6 HR, .533 BABIP, 29% K%
acuña .419/.486/.887, 7 HR, .413 BABIP, 14% K%
buxton .432/.479/.977, 6 HR, .464 BABIP, 21% K%

they're all even in WAR. trout/acuña have played 16 games, buxton only 12

this sort of offense is new for buxton, but if he can maintain even a portion of it, his god-like defense will carry him a long way. (acuña is being dinged for defense thus far)

anyway none of them are likely to carry on like this, but nevertheless i wouldn't say trout is miles ahead

mookieproof, Thursday, 22 April 2021 18:35 (two years ago) link

I think the best piece of evidence for how close this is is that, going back to 2016, Betts is tied with Trout for bWAR, 38.2 each. I think most of you prefer Fangraphs: it's Trout 38.7, Betts 34.1 there. But that's still pretty close.

clemenza, Friday, 23 April 2021 01:14 (two years ago) link

and even that is with trout playing 50 fewer games. the basis of most of the articles I read is the projections which not unfairly assume trout will play less than full seasons, but when he’s suited up he’s still the goat

k3vin k., Friday, 23 April 2021 04:05 (two years ago) link

wild how he’s still in the top 15 in sprint speed, and also how he doesn’t try to steal bases anymore!

Doubtful with Acuna and Guerrero playing the way they are...Just asking the question makes your point, though.

Trout, 30, joined some elite company, as he became the third player in Major League history with at least 1,000 runs, 300 home runs and 200 stolen bases by an age-30 season, joining Willie Mays and Alex Rodriguez. And over the last 60 years, he became the fifth-fastest to 1,000 career runs by games played. It took Trout 1,325 games to reach the milestone and the only players who reached it in fewer games over the last 60 years were Rickey Henderson (1,252), Rodriguez (1,261), Kenny Lofton (1,305) and Albert Pujols (1,306).

Trout, Henderson, Rodriguez, Lofton, Pujols

Lofton was an outstanding player and one of my favorites, growing up, but one of these players does not belong!

Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Sunday, 22 May 2022 17:26 (one year ago) link

I would agree, although highly underrated, and I think the VC will put him into the HOF one day. One of the players whose greatest season came in the strike year of '94.

clemenza, Sunday, 22 May 2022 17:36 (one year ago) link

trout putting up that many runs for the Angels of 2012-2022 is pretty incredible on its own

Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Sunday, 22 May 2022 17:43 (one year ago) link

I was poking around to see if I could find out how fast Raines got there and came across this:

"Ted Williams is the fastest recorded player in MLB history to score 1,000 runs; he scored his 1,000th run in his 1,097th game." So they seem to have chosen a convenient cut-off point of 60 years--Williams was a lot faster, and I'm guessing Ruth, Hornsby, and some others were too.

been thinking about reviving the old “this team fucking stinks” Mariners thread, pretty sure Trout produced more runs than the entire Mariners offense over the series.

still the best player in the league

k3vin k., Sunday, 11 September 2022 05:27 (one year ago) link

Even with all the games he missed he's still having an awesome season. I was surprised to see that after yesterday's game, he's somehow up to 33 HR (in less than 100 GP).

Beat me to it...As great as Bichette has been, he just won player of the week and I'm not sure he should have; I'd have to compare them.
