So, after spending time examining not just the list of movies Morbs gave five stars to on Letterboxed, but also his responses to the prior two "pretend you have a Sight & Sound ballot" threads, I've come up with a pretty good snapshot of what a Morbs ballot would have looked like. :(

I present these Morbs "nominations" here as a tribute, but also open it up to anyone who notices that I've missed one of his pet faves to redress the omission. (It's missing Fritz Lang and Akira Kurosawa and Robert Aldrich, who showed up in the top half of his directors ballot, so if anyone remembers him saying he had a favorite from any of those three, lemme know.)

three weeks pass...

I have an ongoing list that hobbles forward--I add another film every week or two. I'm up to 26. With so many possible additions I think "I put that on a list of favourite films 30 years ago (or 20, or 5), but would I really want to watch it tonight?" I've killed almost everything.

clemenza, Monday, 23 November 2020 02:09 (three years ago) link

December bump! Will update the list again as I can, but sometime in the next few days I'll be opening up the voting/campaigning thread.

The balloting period will be longer than your usual movie poll, definitely into the Biden presidency.

On average, this critic grades 8.3 points lower than other critics (Eric H.), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 16:00 (three years ago) link

Because I'm now subconsciously modeling this poll after my Morbs ballot, I've decided everyone gets 25 ranked-or-unranked "top tier" selections (which isn't the brutally succinct 10, but certainly not as many as most movie nerds would like), and then up to 100 extra slots with a significantly lower number of points assigned.

On average, this critic grades 8.3 points lower than other critics (Eric H.), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 16:03 (three years ago) link

More nominations:

An American Werewolf in London (Landis, John) 1981

The Grandmother (Lynch, David) 1970
In the Mouth of Madness (Carpenter, John) 1994
The Love Parade (Lubitsch, Ernst) 1929
Rachel Getting Married (Demme, Jonathan) 2008

You will notice a small sink where your sofa once was. (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 16:15 (three years ago) link

I'll go over the list and see if anything I'm voting for isn't already included. Excited to vote--I already have a rough ballot together.

1,806 films now listed. (Or a few less, given the likelihood of doubles.)

On average, this critic grades 8.3 points lower than other critics (Eric H.), Monday, 7 December 2020 18:30 (three years ago) link

Seeing a number of doubles, actually, but the fact that so many of them are Morbs favorites reinforces their candidacy so I'll leave them be.
