It's extra-galling that so much of this is already legally out there.

yeah tbh 13 unreleased tracks (excluding versions) out of a 10-disc box is a bit less than what i was hoping for

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:36 (three years ago) link

It's such a fuck-you to the fans. "Hey, thanks for buying Tuscaloosa and the Roxy set and Homegrown! Now you have the rare opportunity to buy them again! And for a lot more money, too! You're welcome!"

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:41 (three years ago) link

Yeah, that sucks, but he pulled the same thing with the first Archives box too.

I'm disappointed that the long rumored Odeon-Budokan double live thing is getting smashed down to a single disc.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:49 (three years ago) link

I think that one was double-live only in that it was going to be a double LP.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:53 (three years ago) link

I'm 100% positive Odeon-Budokan will be issued as an expanded standalone double-disc or boxed set. After Archives II sells out.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:54 (three years ago) link

XP...so it could feasibly be an 80-minute CD.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:54 (three years ago) link

Although... checking that tracklist, that wouldn't appear to be the case, unless Cowgirl & Cortez are jumbo jams. Iirc, the circulating boots have more electric stuff.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:02 (three years ago) link

odeon budokan here is designed as a single LP, one side acoustic, the other electric. it's about 45 minutes long which is about 45 minutes too short.

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:06 (three years ago) link

fuck this, I'm out. gonna take my copy of Homegrown and go sulk.

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:10 (three years ago) link

fuck you, Neil

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:11 (three years ago) link

messing with the Odeon show, wtf

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:11 (three years ago) link

ha, well, I think that this is the live LP that was prepped back in 76 and left unreleased. but yeah, he should be putting out an entire spring 76 w/ crazy horse show.

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:16 (three years ago) link

is anyone really buying this for those 13 songs? how many of those are just alternate versions?

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:17 (three years ago) link

my understanding is theres a bunch of live/alternate versions of previously released songs, as well as 13 songs "that have never been released in any form"

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:27 (three years ago) link

i can't believe they aren't doing a basic cd box set, so dumb

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:34 (three years ago) link

I can't believe he's not putting out a 25-LP edition of this.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:41 (three years ago) link

i can't believe his website won't let you copy and paste the text that's on it

president of my cat (Karl Malone), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:49 (three years ago) link

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:06 (three years ago) link

Yeah the 13 "new" songs is really misleading, One Eye Open otm. There are 13 new songs that have never been released in any for whatsoever, and I think I want to say like 58 alternate and live versions that have been previously unreleased. So I still think it's a pretty cool set, considering the era covered. But as with pretty much anything Neil does, there is a base level of confusion and disappointment that comes with anything he announces.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:11 (three years ago) link

alternate versions in neil's case can be pretty meaningful too, for example you could say that "white line" off homegrown was already a released song on ragged glory but they might as well be different songs

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:31 (three years ago) link

In the midst of this, there's a Greendale live archive thing out soon no one's talking about.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:45 (three years ago) link

49 previously unreleased alternate versions and 13 "new" songs (most of these have not been bootlegged before either). i mean, it's not nothing!

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:47 (three years ago) link

but i mean, yeah ... I must've said it at least three times before on this very thread: Neil should have started releasing definitive "deluxe" reissues of his records 15 years ago with bonus discs. And then continued the "performance series" releases. Would've made all of this very simple and straightforward.

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:50 (three years ago) link

Right, weren't we supposed to be getting that deluxe Ragged Glory this year? But now we get... Greendale? Oh, Neil.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:54 (three years ago) link

haha i mean greendale is the most *neil* of all neil boondoggles and i don't think he will ever give up on it

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 October 2020 17:03 (three years ago) link

He loves Greendale

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2020 17:04 (three years ago) link

He isn't wrong

chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 22 October 2020 17:05 (three years ago) link

Oh I'll buy the Greendale thing to, I just was looking forward to that Ragged Glory thing.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 22 October 2020 17:07 (three years ago) link

too, dammit, thanks Neil

its so bad

Spottie, Thursday, 22 October 2020 17:38 (three years ago) link

ha yeah its definitely old internet, which I kind of love it for - clearly conceived for the era when people would spend a whole afternoon exploring one website

"there are so many fun detours to get lost in, i feel like i always discover something new when i'm exploring it!" vs 2020: "just gimme the fuckin content as fast and plainly as possible, pls"

neil young, visionary, in the late 70s: i wish there were a way for my fans to have all my music at once, like a virtual file cabinet

neil young, living legend, late 2000s: !! wait a second

president of my cat (Karl Malone), Thursday, 22 October 2020 17:49 (three years ago) link

The purest, most analog file cabinet.

"what are you DOING to fleetwood mac??" (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 October 2020 18:39 (three years ago) link

It's the most analog a digital file cabinet could be. He'll probably find some way to burn it all down in a virtual fire to get the virtual insurance money.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 October 2020 18:43 (three years ago) link

gotta say, for all the complaints, there are tons of amazing things on this set. neil young is the greatest.

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2020 20:55 (three years ago) link

archives update:

10-23-20
Reprise Records, my record company for about 50 years, underestimated the demand for Archives VOLUME II. We were all surprised. It is a beautiful package that I am proud to have made for you. I do feel badly that we did not deliver it to many who were waiting so long for it.

We don’t feel that offering more of a product sold as a limited edition is a good thing to do. Thank you to all who purchased this set.

In 2021 we will be offering more Archives VOLUME II products as Reprise had originally planned, available in all outlets. These, while not the boxed set, will offer all of the of the music and discs with a smaller book. The original large book will be available for separate sale.
Thanks! NYA

tylerw, Friday, 23 October 2020 18:21 (three years ago) link

ok cool, sucks it's not until 2021 though

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 October 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link

"as Reprise had originally planned"

i bet the folks who ponied up the $250 would have liked to know this.

Thus Sang Freud, Friday, 23 October 2020 18:37 (three years ago) link

definitely disappointing especially because he finally relented on his ridiculous vinyl prices in the last few years, making them affordable finally

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 October 2020 18:40 (three years ago) link

yeah i'm hoping the prime stuff from this release will trickle out on vinyl. future record store days or whatever.

Thus Sang Freud, Friday, 23 October 2020 18:42 (three years ago) link

yeah odeon budokan should definitely be put out as a vinyl set. he could make a killing with the unreleased zuma stuff on a single LP too.

tylerw, Friday, 23 October 2020 19:01 (three years ago) link

^^ would buy
