tbf, being born in 1900 sounds like it sucked; i guess i'll stop crying

uh it lets you get through 2 wars and Spanish flu 'alive and unscathed', pretty good in my book

Then at 29 years you survive the global economic crisis that started with the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange, causing inflation, unemployment and famine.

Uh, that's not how you spell ruinous deflation. Probably was getting the Great Depression mixed up with Weimar Germany. And yes, the 20th century sucked in lots of ways.

Kid gets around, living through the Spanish flu, two world wars and

Actually blah.

Basically, old people complain about nothing. Except young people.

i’ll admit i was thinking along the lines of the first part of that macro just two days ago, mainly in the context of like, mass suffering has been the norm for a lot of humanity for a long time and i am personally lucky to have basically evaded that. so far. it IS a brutal succession of crises but most of european history has been.

Can't be part of a brutal European history if you're not in Europe

But humanity survived much more serious circumstances and never lost the joy of living.

All of humanity, huh? This is meaningless. But what it tries to suggest is a pure fantasy. Lots of people in past centuries (just like today) felt very little, or no, joy in living. Joy is intermittent and rather rare even in the best and happiest lives.

By the time Vietnam rolled around they were probably the warmongers cheering on Operation Rolling Thunder.

(I know why I hate it. It's being shared by friends who are mostly out-of-work actors, non-asshole middle-aged men with good hearts who are probably having a rough year, ones who are looking for some glimmer of fun and fulfillment and a way to socialize with booze, connect in a year or disconnection, and here they are caught up in this. And I don't want to be the one in the comments to make them feel ashamed for getting excited about something, and I imagine them recoiling into a deeper winter funk when it doesn't pan out.)

I will honestly say that I love going to bed early. Going to bed at 9 is awesome.

lol i love it too. i hate staying up late and i'm a big morning person. i am in bed by 8:30 most weeknights.

Joses Chrust (map), Friday, 5 February 2021 00:57 (three years ago) link

i've probably seen more dawns than sunsets over the past year. fuck the night time, it's dark and cold. long live day time and the sun.

recently i re-followed a bunch of people on facebook that i unfollowed for reasons i forgot, and now i'm remembering why i unfollowed those people.

i really like spying on my 'suggested friends.' lately it's throwing up a lot of bear-type thotties because i was super shallow and friended this guy i don't know because of his insanely attractive face. (once i could see his profile i realized he is super boring lol).

Joses Chrust (map), Friday, 5 February 2021 01:03 (three years ago) link

I haven't gone to bed before 9 in my adult life unless there was all day drinking before

The Man DeLorean (onimo), Friday, 5 February 2021 01:05 (three years ago) link

I never go to bed before 9, but before 10… absolutely

The return of our beloved potatoes (the table is the table), Friday, 5 February 2021 01:07 (three years ago) link

Going to sleep before midnight is absolutely impossible for me, no matter how early I have to get up. These days I'm only working sporadically so 2/3am is the usual. Anything earlier feels like wasted time somehow

Not everyone needs the same amount of sleep? Also, I spent most of my years from 18-30 staying up very late nearly all the time. It was only when I started having to get up for early work that I realized, 'oh wait I like the morning better, night time kind of sucks'

The return of our beloved potatoes (the table is the table), Friday, 5 February 2021 11:53 (three years ago) link

if I go to bed prior to midnight, i can't sleep. if I go to bed past 1:30 am, i will struggle to get to sleep.

i have a 30 minute pocket that I have to hit or else it's gonna be a long night.

this is due to years of working from home, when I was office bound i had to be in bed earlier.

he said that you son of a bitch (Neanderthal), Friday, 5 February 2021 13:20 (three years ago) link

I am typically exhausted at 9 or 9:30, but for various marital reasons I usually wait until 10:30 to retire.

My son is usually awake and making demands at 4:00 AM.

On normal days that's the pattern, but on a night when I am playing music (performing, recording, rehearsing) the dynamic flips and I become the night person.

champagne heathernova (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 5 February 2021 13:32 (three years ago) link

I wish I could sleep all day and stay up all night but working an office job where everyone else works 9-5 that wont work.

Mosholu Porkway (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 5 February 2021 14:39 (three years ago) link

all the music stuff i like takes place at night, but i'm allergic to the night, so it's a struggle.

feel like it's genuinely rare to meet another morning person. most people i know (creative types) are very much night owls.

Joses Chrust (map), Friday, 5 February 2021 20:58 (three years ago) link

things is with me, the moment midnight hits, my energy cuts in half, like, almost immediately. and it usually comes out of nowhere.

he said that you son of a bitch (Neanderthal), Friday, 5 February 2021 21:09 (three years ago) link

map, i have almost completely stopped going to music events in the past few years as a result of my dislike of staying up late. i haven't gone to a late-night dance party since 2017!
