Look Tom just because I bought wingtips at a Baltimore thrift store the day of your wedding doesn't mean they're suddenly IN now, GAWD.

I used to have a pair of Sketchers' engineer boots. They fell apart after a year.

oh and btw, i went to payless today and found NOTHING good. ohwell. and found nothing good in all the other shoestores i went into. i'm going to have to stop looking and then good shoes will come. but anyway, i spent money on a usb/sata drive enclosure today instead, which is totally, like, the opposite of blue wedge sandals (but still cool!).

one other thing: do nice sandals for men even exist?? (I am looking for a friend, who will probably end up in something godawful anyway. I have seen nothing nice.)

Tracer are you trying to take credit for PAUL EATER'S procurement? I believe it is he who deserves the credit for what were, in fact, great shoes.

Inspired by this shoe thread, I stopped by Daisy Too or whatever the hell it is called (the shoe part in back has a different name! But it is the same shop so WTF?). A pair of kelly green pumps I had admired quite a while back--but at whose price I blanched--was on sale for 75% off! 75%!!! So I bought them, despite the fact they are too big. I plan to fix that with some inserts and heel-sticker thingies.

i want some shoes that combine the best qualities of a jet engine, a merino wool sweater, and a giant fern.

just because obviously shoe designers are randomly splicing away, so why not. it's like fish-tomatoes, for your feet.

I agree with Lauren about the whole sandals issue, ugh ugh ugh other people's gnarly toes.

Mary, those slip-on Converse look even better in a grey high-top. Nick's girlfriend H has a lovely pair.

I'm on the fence about sandals for men (like, other than the cheapest plastic ones for beach-wear) -- I'd LIKE to say "no, there are no such things as un-awful men's sandals" but in fact I think in the right setting and with a little style, they can be fine. Obv EVERYONE has to keep up his/her feet so we're not exposed to cracked calluses and hangnails on the morning commute, but I like simple leather flip-flips on men sometimes with summer-wear, and I'm sure there are decent fisherman's-style sandals out there someplace. I realize this opin will meet much resistance.

style isn't the point of sandals, which is why the leather Romanesque shit is awful. but rubber/fabric beach or adventure wear is classic. it's summer. take your clothes off and fuck one fashion.

Oh yeah, I'm fine with basic plastic flip-flops etc, I just don't think that's the kind of shoe at issue, here. No one's saying "don't wear sandals to the beach", are they? I'm preparing a defense of MANDALS as day-wear.

Yeah, I'm sorry, I know this is a techy issue for you gabbneb and you've defended it many times in the past, but sandals are not acceptable "going out and about" wear for men. Bars and workplaces are not for men's feet, really. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMaybe if you kept up your feet REALLY well you could get away with it without looking really manky at a dive bar but why would you want your feet out and about on the floor of a dirty bar?

Going to the beach or running errands is obviously a bit of a different story, I don't think anyone expects pure unadulterated fashion at the Fairway.

I agree with Laurel about MANDALS! If I get to wear sandals all summer long, then guys should too, of course, but the sandals available for men aren't all that nice. But then, women's feet vs men's feet in "cute" department, etc - this is about more than FEET, it's about gender dynamics, form and function, etc etc. Hence, I suppose?, the sport/sturdier-looking/"manly" sandal for men. But I have sturdy sandals that don't look like shoe tanks, so the same should be for men. Like, that sport sandal above, in brown leather with a sturdy, perhaps birkenstock-like sole (but not birks!) would be alright! but apparently does not exist.

Kenneth Cole shoes suck, in my experience.

I was hanging out with a group of friends and we split off into male and female groups for walking around a shopping area. Being the gender stereotype killers we are, we ended up looking at shoes. My two accomplices ended up picking up very similar shoes. When the sales guy asked what size they needed, they both said at the same time, "ten and a half." I'm fairly sure he thought they were some sort of couple with a shoe fetish. In any case, I envy the shoes and wish I'd bought them since they ended up being really comfortable:

I don't like quite so much visible stitching on a shoe, but those do look comfortable.

I think I am quite happy for men to wear sandals (not flip flops) in most situations as long as their feet are nice. It seems unfair that women should have access to a whole world of acceptable sandals whereas for men it is something of a minefield.

archel, yes, cute in a very practical way! i like the criss-cross bits. and the sole looks solid. good for walking.

OK have decided that if I am to get these YSL shoes the colour I want them in is SEPIA. Yes, sepia. Shock horror I have some clothes that require non-black footwear to look good. And worn with sepia not black fishnets/crochet pattern tights this might look divine all year.

The wallaby sole/heel material that reminds me of snot in a resin mould makes the wedge look more appropriate to the needs of the senior shopper.

i see what you mean about the senior-needs aesthetic. but i'm rather drawn to that kind of thing (yeah...), if styled up a bit. i still think i could pull it off - the wedge appears less gummy in close-up.
