Amazing!

Ha, fair enough... ugh now I'm going to go look up that dumbass's HoF speech

The best part of that evening is not on video. Love apparently had (has?) a habit of taking off his shoes during performances. While the end-of-the-night all-star jam was happening, Mick Jagger stole Love’s shoes.

Ha, nice!

Also, I was in Rite-Aid earlier and Kokomo came on the in-house radio there. That was a little unnerving in itself...

Related, you guys might have seen this floating around Twitter today...

that nachos story seems absolutely plausible to me

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 01:10 (three years ago) link

Some are asking if this story is true. It is. It took place on 8/2/09 at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA. Here’s a photo I took of Mike Love scolding Kayvon for eating nachos. pic.twitter.com/NE0hSrRZbB

Omigosh that was something else... ok, the nachos thing is obv 500 percent true; i was wrong to question it.

Watching that speech my initial thought was, wow, he is so effortlessly creepy, it's kind of amazing... i did not anticipate the insulting his peers and then transitioning into we're all one TM glurge parts. Wow... also notable how similar it is to elememts of trump's rhetorical style during his rally speeches.

mike love is one of the rare people for whom a convincing case could be made that they would be a more sadistic and unhinged president than donald j. trump imo

I met Bruce n Mike one time ‘backstage’ at a rich boomer party at the Peabody hotel. a high school homie was their publicist for a bit in the late oughts. It was all of an 11 minute encounter but Bruce came off way more dickish.

One of the writers in a local alt-weekly gave a bad review to their 1992 album Summer in Paradise. He soon met Bruce Johnston, who told him that his review didn't count because he was a millionaire and the writer was not.

Bob Dylan as diplomatic peacemaker is an amusing turn in that R&RHOF story too. Long way from Don't Look Back.

pretty sweet assortment of shirts there

Curious that only Mike and Bruce have the honour of wearing Beach Boys baseball caps in that photo.

Weird that John Cowsill (shirt at extreme right) has played w/ the Beach Boys almost as long as Dennis Wilson did

Josefa, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 12:23 (two years ago) link

John Cowsill was a beast on the 50th anniversary tour, made it clear why he was the only guy that got brought over from Mike's band for his playing / singing.

(Mike's bandleader / guitarist was the only other guy brought over at all, and I'm sure he did heroic work as a mediator & played well, but the Wondermints dude just stayed home to make room for Cowsill.)

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 19:39 (two years ago) link

I don't remember who was in the band when I saw that 50th show (besides the Beach Boys and Wondermints guy(s)), but I do know there were like 8 guitars on stage, and they didn't need 8 guitars.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 19:48 (two years ago) link

Was just thinking the other day that one of the many unusual things about the Beach Boys is that there are so many songs *about* surfing and surf culture, but not much actual surf music.

With the exception of The Band’s Robbie Robertson, Mike Love might be the most polarizing person to ever be in the music business.

Mardi Gras Mambo Sun (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 March 2022 18:03 (two years ago) link

Is he really polarizing if no one likes him?

Josefa, Saturday, 19 March 2022 18:07 (two years ago) link

Lol.

Mardi Gras Mambo Sun (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 March 2022 19:41 (two years ago) link

That came from this publicly visible FB page that keeps showing up in my feed recently. Guy seems to be trying to walk some tricky middle ground here.

Mardi Gras Mambo Sun (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 March 2022 19:46 (two years ago) link

Seems like everyone likes Carl, but that maybe Brian is actually the most polarizing BB, for varying reasons

Josefa, Saturday, 19 March 2022 19:58 (two years ago) link

There are definitely Mike Love stans out there.

move over GAPDY, now there's BIG THIEF! (PBKR), Saturday, 19 March 2022 21:07 (two years ago) link

Think that guy says he started that page because other BB sites were either Mike-leaning sites or Brian-leaning sites and he is tilting at the windmill of splitting the difference. He also goes into some Brian vs. Carl beefing that I didn't really know about.

Mardi Gras Mambo Sun (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 19 March 2022 21:16 (two years ago) link

The Beach Boys are basically the Ship of Theseus now.

Get ready for your monocle to pop when you see how many songs in the average 38-song BB’s headline set were written by Brian

(I went to the Unleash The Love solo album launch at Amoeba, and even that was strictly one Unleash song, one Beach Boys song, rinse & repeat (and the band was the touring Boys))
