I assume a future president or whomever could pretty easily strip a former president of those benefits, esp. if they were compromising national security or putting people at risk. Like, Trump could conceivably trade state secrets in return for, say, permission to build a hotel in Moscow or something, which I know is nothing he'd even consider, we're just talking hypotheticals here.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 October 2020 17:45 (three years ago) link

goddamnit the malt thing is one of the very few times Trump is actually relatable.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 19 October 2020 17:49 (three years ago) link

finally, he's struck a new tone

Dr.Tony Fauci says we don’t allow him to do television, and yet I saw him last night on @60Minutes, and he seems to get more airtime than anybody since the late, great, Bob Hope. All I ask of Tony is that he make better decisions. He said “no masks & let China in”. Also, Bad arm!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 19, 2020

...P.S. Tony should stop wearing the Washington Nationals’ Mask for two reasons. Number one, it is not up to the high standards that he should be exposing. Number two, it keeps reminding me that Tony threw out perhaps the worst first pitch in the history of Baseball!

Ah, yes, it's the old "which candidate would you rather drink a malt with" question. Can Biden's ice cream addiction compete with sudden cravings for a malted milkshake? We'll see when all the votes have been tallied on November, uh, 40th.

Only because our favorite president has yet to do so, to my eternal chagrin.

Can you imagine the gif, just playing on repeat forever and ever, that sad ball flopping onto the ground three feet in front of him, the front of his slacks slowly darkening with the urine of regret

On tarmac in Phoenix, Trump sounding angry, calling Joe Biden "a criminal" and accusing the press of being criminals for not covering his attacks on Biden.

To the extent that it doesn't become dangerous (which isn't unlikely), his increasingly-unhinged desperation will be quite beautiful to behold.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 October 2020 19:58 (three years ago) link

Every now and then I remember that even in the event of a humiliating defeat, for the rest of his years Donald Trump will have
secret service protection, travel privileges, (military) health care, a lifetime salary of $200,000, plus 100K annually for office expenses....

I can't even be mad at the idea of a secret service detail flanking him on his daily travel from his cell to the showerblock to the mess hall

Trump is always referring to "the disaster known as Obamacare." If Biden wins, he should rename it "The Disaster Formerly Known as Obamacare" in the first few months of his term, then drop that for a mysterious symbol.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Trump replied. “Look, he’s an expert. He’s one of the experts of the world.”

i’m afraid to say there are some Trump phrases that almost make you wriggle with pleasure.

from this long dive into white house covid chaos in the WaPo.

to balance what might be seen as unseemly amusement, i thought the most telling quote in the piece was this:

Trump and many of his advisers have come to believe that the key to a revived economy and a return to normalcy is a vaccine.
“They’ve given up on everything else,” said a senior administration official involved in the pandemic response. “It’s too hard of a slog.”

that has the ring of truth to it, and it reads across to the UK (I’m normally *very* wary of drawing US-UK comparisons). There’s a sort of structural and ideological laziness, which might be summed up as ‘the state and the act of governing is too hard’ - ideology is almost the excuse for the actual cause which is just not wanting to do anything which looks too much like hard work. in the UK my view is that they don’t actually know how to do hard work, they don’t understand the levers they can pull. ‘shrinking the state’ has withered their sense of how the state works, and made them indifferent to what it can do.

Fizzles, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 07:21 (three years ago) link

Yes, good stuff, Fizzles. In the UK we've been alternating between grim workaholics and lazy offhand poshos for some time: Brown/ Cameron/ May/ Johnson. I'm not saying one is necessarily a reaction to the other but I do wonder sometimes.
