already seeing ppl say bolivians "voted out fascism." that is not what happened. u dont need to know much abt the situation to kno that this was only possible bc a full year of militant resistance by thousands of ppl, mostly indigenous ppl & workers, made the coup untenable pic.twitter.com/673U8VVybM

has anybody read any good (not foreign affairs magazine type) long articles about the anti-coup activities in bolivia over the last year. little reporting i've read has been pretty piecemeal and largely in publications that seem disappointed not to be congratulating the cia

Bolivia’s former president, Evo Morales, returned to the country on Monday, a year after his failed attempt to keep power tore the nation apart and sent him into exile.https://t.co/BRSygQrS4T

I don't know why I bother on this message board but...Morales did fail to get voters to approve the change needed in the Bolivian constitution for him to serve a fourth term as president.

I think it’s time for Bolivia’s left wing to let go of Morales.

y'all know he wasn't on the ballot, right

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 16:31 (three years ago) link

Of course, but he still holds a lot of power through the unions and MAS.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 16:33 (three years ago) link

or do you mean that Bolivia's left wing should abandon his party, who just won 55% of the vote in a three way race xp

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 16:33 (three years ago) link

I think he should just retire and let other people continue the good work.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 16:35 (three years ago) link

Other people at MAS, that is.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 16:36 (three years ago) link

Why?

Piven After Midnight (The Yellow Kid), Tuesday, 10 November 2020 17:16 (three years ago) link

13 years at the helm is good enough. Term limits are important, he already amended the constitution by packing the courts with his people to get past one. He did good stuff for Bolivia and his legacy can live on with MAS, but I honestly think that him seeking too much power again will hinder MAS’s objectives today.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 17:24 (three years ago) link

Let MAS decide what will or won't hinder them.

BREAKING: Bolivia has cancelled and returned the full sum of the US $346.7 Million IMF loan taken out by the coup regime, in rejection of IMF impositions on internal economic policy.

As of February 2021, the loan had already racked up $24.3 Million in interest and commissions. pic.twitter.com/4sPkAJRtsg

Ridiculous to call it a coup when there was legitimate elections and landslide victory for the opposition party and a peaceful transfer of power.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 14 March 2021 02:12 (three years ago) link

Didn’t the government that took over last year without being democratically elected kill dozens of protesters? And people continued to protest? I don’t think the legitimate elections happened in a vacuum.

JoeStork, Sunday, 14 March 2021 03:18 (three years ago) link

xp lol what???? Her party polled 4% and as for peaceful, you don’t remove criminal liability from police and the military if you think the transfer of power is going to be peaceful.

Was she in charge of the military while Morales resigned under military threat? Or of the National Union of Workers?

Did she make the election audit that lead to widespread false claims that Morales had committed electoral fraud?

If there is clarity that she indeed contributed to the errors to the OAS report or that she colluded with the National Union and military to oust Morales, then I'll gladly called it a coup.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 14 March 2021 22:31 (three years ago) link

I still think a Morales 4th term would be largely unconstitutional and that he ought to have respected the results of the 2016 referendum.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 14 March 2021 22:36 (three years ago) link

Do they have hanging for fascists like Anez in Bolivia? Be cool if they did.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 14 March 2021 23:12 (three years ago) link

Calling it opposition crackdown is hyperbolic, Añez barely represents the opposition.

yes, the dictator installed by the military who overthrew the democratically elected government wasn't personally responsible for the coup itself, therefore it wasn't actually a coup
