Fixed myself the usual cup of moka this morning, and it's just so much more flavourful than the AeroPress. I'll give it another shot after lunch.

pomenitul, Friday, 16 October 2020 13:15 (three years ago) link

ime you do need to let it steep a good 3 mins or so. And use the scoop they provide - which is a bit more coffee than most people are used to using for 1 cup of coffee.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 October 2020 13:28 (three years ago) link

I did use their scoop, yes, but I only stirred it for 10 seconds before pressing the plunger per AP's instructions, so I'll try your suggestion, thanks.

pomenitul, Friday, 16 October 2020 13:37 (three years ago) link

RN I'm back to using the french press. It's not my favorite way, as I find it a little inconsistent, and I find that when I use enough grinds to get the strength I like it takes on a bit of an earthy/muddy quality. But it's good. I've been using Partners beans I got on sale and they are roughly comparable in quality to Colombe, Stumptown etc, maybe not quite as good but in that tier.

areopress claiming to be espresso is dumb but you can make a nice cup of cof w it

bonavita dripper weekdays, bolsita weekends. French press is just too complicated

when my in-laws are in town i use a cafetière (french press) with a ruff grind and you know what? it’s good

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 October 2020 14:47 (three years ago) link

wtf is "complicated" about a french press?

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 16 October 2020 14:55 (three years ago) link

compared to a canvas sock, plenty. Try it out y'all

cowboy coffee or gtfo

brimstead, Friday, 16 October 2020 17:31 (three years ago) link

lol hadn't seen that before. Boiling the coffee before the sock? Gross! I've been doing the Costa Rica sock method. Coffee into sock and pour water through it, into cup. A little finer grind than for French Press.

I have an infinity grinder! I'm down!

70% chemex
10% aeropress
10% vietnamese cafe style phin
10% cold brew

rb (soda), Friday, 16 October 2020 18:27 (three years ago) link

I steep in Aero for ~1 minute. With my grind (medium-fine) it gets bitter if I do much more. I like to try a lot of new beans, so I adjust my method accordingly. If it's still too weak after a minute, I'll use a finer grind or more beans. Full disclosure, though: I always drink it black, and I generally prefer a lighter roast and more "fruit-forward" tasting beans.

beard papa, Friday, 16 October 2020 19:53 (three years ago) link

also water temp makes a big difference for me. I'm not too picky about it: 160-180 F is fine, but hotter than that result in bitterness.

beard papa, Friday, 16 October 2020 19:54 (three years ago) link

love that coffee

I have a decidedly non-fancy, non-gooseneck electric kettle. Ideal temp for me seems to be to let it reach boiling, then open the lid and let steam out for like 2 mins.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 16 October 2020 21:21 (three years ago) link

I do the same with mine. I don't actually take the temp or anything, but when I first started doing this I used to and that resulted in ideal temperature.

A friend of mine came up with a really finicky Aeropress method that I keep meaning to try: You have to have a steel filter. Put the Aeropress on top of the cup, put the grinds in, pour the water in, let it steep for about 20 secs. Stir it, then put the plunger in as softly as you can and use whatever vacuum has built up to very gently suck the steeping grinds up a centimeter or so, so that water is no longer dripping through the grounds into the cup. Then, you dump whatever is in the cup (this is key), let it sit for a minute or so, then press it. His whole theory is that you want to get rid of that first bit of water that runs through the grounds without properly steeping.

i know it's cliche to be like just make your damn coffee and drink it life is too short for that bullshit but sheesh come on

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Friday, 16 October 2020 22:13 (three years ago) link

no that’s pretty much exactly what i do (except i let it sit longer) except for ditching what made it into the cup why because i can’t find it in my heart to lose precious cof

my temp method for the water is to pour the boiling water into the mug, let it sit for...... i dunno, whatever, which not only saps the heat from the water but heats up the mug to keep my coffee hotter longer *taps head *

Hah, it takes > 5 minutes and I enjoy the ritual. And, coffee is worth the little extra effort it takes to make a proper cup. I only drink a cup in the morning, and an optional post-lunch. That first gulp of morning coffee is pretty much my favorite moment of the day, so I don't mind perfecting it. One reason I started doing it this way was to use my own laziness to cut down on coffee. If I required 3 cups a day this method would not be sustainable and I'd be drinking from a Mr Coffee or whatever.

beard papa, Friday, 16 October 2020 23:38 (three years ago) link

Tracer, my friend who shared that method with me just told me he now uses one of these and swears by it. My curiosity is piqued!

beard papa, Friday, 16 October 2020 23:41 (three years ago) link

I've only ever done the inverted method with the Aeropress. The other way frankly looks more difficult to me. I'd be worried about trying to seat the plunger when the tube is already full of hot water and coffee grounds. Even doing the inverted way, I knocked it over once, and hot water and coffee grounds went all over the counter, got inside my electronic scale, which gave me a scare for about a day until it dried out and started working again.

o. nate, Saturday, 17 October 2020 21:59 (three years ago) link

I have no idea what changed – or, indeed, if anything changed at all – but my last two attempts yielded much better results, using the default method.

we don't talk much about here about how we take our cof. i'm forcing myself to drink it black because i'm trying to eliminate sugar as best i can, and i don't like any other sweeteners, natural or otherwise. no cream/milk/soy/oat/almond etc

cream/sugar for you guys?

rip van wanko, Wednesday, 21 October 2020 12:14 (three years ago) link

the only time i have milk is if i'm ordering a flat white or a machiatto. at home it is always, always black.

if i'm at a snooty 3rd-wave coffee shop, no. if i'm at a caff, yes.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 21 October 2020 13:29 (three years ago) link

i take my coffee w a fairly good glug of cream - most often no sugar, but sometimes just a touch of sugar if it’s not a very nice batch of beans

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 21 October 2020 17:02 (three years ago) link

lattes though, i hardly ever have sugar unless it’s a little raw sugar sprinkled on top

if you can get just the right amount of sugar where it brings out the natural sweetness of the brew without tasting like sugar thats very nice

For hot coffee, I always drink it black. If its iced or cold brew, I usually add whole milk.

o. nate, Wednesday, 21 October 2020 17:41 (three years ago) link

Same here. Black if hot, tiny splash of whole milk and a tsp of simple syrup if iced.

Anything from 1% to whole milk works for me. I'll do half and half if no options but it's a little too rich.

Sometimes I drink too much coffee just because it's there and it's something to have, and then I wind up getting irritable. I had to really practice mindfulness today when I started getting edgy, that I shouldn't drink more and try to focus on regulating my mood instead. It worked but it took a few hours for the already excess caffeine to leave my system.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 27 October 2020 01:37 (three years ago) link

I will say that the AeroPress is my preferred method when I am camping.

I have been thinking about the few months when we used an old school percolator, kind of want to get a small one to make cups in the afternoon.

Oh, and a good shop finally opened near me, and they make a decent Americano, which I'm so excited about.
