how exciting! congratulations. so, i tend to be pretty conservative on these things, but my thinking is that with dark, solid suits and white shirts, a plaid is going to draw a lot of attention. in particular, you don't want you and your groomsmen to look like christmas decorations that need to be boxed up for next year.

i think a solid burgundy or a stripe with a predominant burgundy is a great place to start. consider material as well--linen isn't going to work on dec. 31. i would be looking for grenadine knits or wool ties that have some weight to them. if i have some time later i'll poke around for some specific ideas.

A grenadine tie is a good suggestion! You can get some decent ones from Charles Tyrwhitt: https://www.ctshirts.com/us/silk-grenadine-italian-luxury-tie---burgundy/TIL0482BGD.html?pf=pdp_colour_swatch

There's also such a think as a 'wedding tie' which means things like fine checks, houndstooth patterns, etc. usually in shades of gray or somewhat close. Here's one that's in wool, so it will be wintery but still somewhat refined: https://www.thetiebar.com/product/TIE-4941-0174

This one too: https://www.thetiebar.com/product/TIE-2033-0001

Or this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Ralph-Lauren-Purple-Label-Silk-Tie-Made-in-Italy-Black-and-Silver/373114607291?hash=item56df5d16bb:g:AaIAAOSwhQhY6IH3

You can also do small prints ('neats).

Whatever you choose, I'd try to find a tie in a width that is somewhat similar to the width of the lapels on your jacket. It'll look a bit more unified.

er, typos, and on second look the first Tie Bar example I posted isn't as much of a true check as I thought, but you get the idea

Congratulations - and grenadine thirded. I wore charcoal suit + green grenadine tie from Drake's for my wedding.

This limits your outfits drastically, as you will look like you are either going for a run or a swim and thus can’t wear them in professional or formal settings.

i did a big hunt for warm yet lightweight yet waterproof coats a few months ago and gave up, my eyes blurred, my hands shaking, my dreams that night strafed with a hundred blazing ropes of product lines that sound like the names of hideo kojima videogames - torrentfall, climbshell, etc

i think they're called '3 layer coats' or something because they protect you from 1) rain 2) cold 3) errr girls? idk. anyway i didn't get anything.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 28 December 2020 21:57 (three years ago) link

lol @ "torrentfall, climbshell"

ffolkes (map), Monday, 28 December 2020 22:02 (three years ago) link

Columbia is great for the kind of thing you are describing - lightweight, warm, not puffy, reasonably priced. I have a Columbia coat that I got for like $60 at Costco - no down or anything, that has a really nice profile and is fine for all but the coldest winter days. It has this slightly weird crinkly material on the inside that reminds me of fast food wrap and supposedly does something something thermal something. Whatever, it keeps me warm, it looks good, and it was $60.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 28 December 2020 22:38 (three years ago) link

It's pretty similar to this actually, except that for $175 I hope that there's something superior about it to mine

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 28 December 2020 22:40 (three years ago) link

Honestly even when it's like 20 degrees outside I just put on a warmer sweater and that coat and I'm still good. Columbia makes good products. My wife has Columbia snow boots that have lasted ten winters already, whereas my north face boots fell apart after two.
