OK, thank you for addressing my questions calmly and reasonably. That makes a lot of sense, and puts my mind at ease.
I think if that's the case, then the incident was handled well, and kudos to you for good modding, DC. Thanks!

So why when someone posts two anti-Semitic videos on two different threads, and a (older) Covid-19 conspiracy theory video on another, all of which are deleted having being brought to the attention of the mods - is this person is still posting, including on one of the same threads? But, instant ban for someone who says c**t a lot and apparently can't be trusted not to follow through on threats to stab Keir Starmer?

Anyway, back to the hilarious Admin Log bantz.
― Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Thursday, 8 October 2020 08:34 (three years ago) link
I haven't seen the AS video posts and didn't know they existed so will look into that. It may be under discussion right now, I don't know. There's a hell of a lot to keep on top of on this board and things do slip under the radar, one of the main reasons why the FP function exists at all.
Re: deleting the offending post, it's tricky, because if you delete and ban straight away then you get a lot of people saying "why were they banned? I can't see anything offensive", with the subtext that it couldn't have been that bad, and you end up back in the same dance.
I should point out that very few people get FP'ed for expressing an unpopular opinion - there is the occasional comedy FP for, I dunno, expressing a love of Mumford & Sons or a hatred of Gaz Coombes, but those obviously aren't taken into account if they get near the threshold (and if they're near the threshold at all there's clearly something else going on).
It is the way in which those opinions are expressed that gets people FPed. By way of context, there are only five people on the FP leaderboard AT ALL right now, and all of those people have a track record of addressing people or groups of people in a way that is regularly dismissive, disrespectful or belittling.
The other stuff doesn't need to be dredged up again and doesn't benefit anyone, least of all the person in question, who incidentally is still posting and like 99.9% of other posters nowhere near any kind of threshold right now.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 8 October 2020 08:46 (three years ago) link
disturbed to find out you consider FPing Gaznostics is "comedy"
― 1000 Scampo DJs (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 8 October 2020 08:47 (three years ago) link
If stuff gets rightly and quickly removed for Jew-bashing or suchlike, obviously people who would otherwise FP it won't see it. This is better than leaving that shit around for everyone to look at.

The poster in question decided to double down on it after people complained about the deleted videos by following up with a picture of Epstein and Trump. I agree he would easily have racked up FPs if people hadn't caught the posts in question quickly, but in any case that's beyond the pale.

The person wasn't a rando and had posted conspiracy stuff previously - though not openly anti-Semitic stuff afaict. Anyway, well done, Matt.

Can you identify the poster or the posts more clearly so that I can go fp them too? I don’t see what’s going on.
― All cars are bad (Euler), Thursday, 8 October 2020 10:15 (three years ago) link

I didn’t catch that, but if one of the follow-up AS posts is still there in the controp thread, I think I see what’s going on (not a rando, sadly).

I think burrito was quadrupling down on his right to fat shame Chris Christie and people FP-ed accordingly but...I guess all of the offending posts were deleted? Which is weird.

oops xpost
afaik we've had some clusterfucks in here recently, but mostly this is a "hey how did this person get yellow-carded/banned, I missed it" thread.
this particular one doesn't seem to be clusterfucky, and I tend to not read the ones that turn into THIS BAN WAS UNJUST!
― LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Monday, 12 October 2020 17:53 (three years ago) link
None of the posts were deleted - but yes the Burrito situation in an absolute open and shut case of what I was talking about re: failing or refusing to acknowledge the sensitivities of the posters around you and then doubling down on it when you've been asked to stop. Except yes in this case it was more like quadrupling down. The number of FPs spiralled really quickly on this one.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 11:37 (three years ago) link
Burrito knew he'd be banned and I read it as a protest against new moral strictures. But idk, slightly weird hill to die on given how there are much more piquant ways to skewer the shambling ogres of the American right than 'tub of lard'
― Chip-vill-A (imago), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 11:52 (three years ago) link
my read was that burrito's goal was to skewer the ~~~PC culture~~~ of people on the board who are ~~~too sensitive~~~; thus every post after the first time it was called out was motivated by trying to troll the room. really obnoxious, antisocial behavior imho; hope he comes back acting better.
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 15:25 (three years ago) link
I mean this person’s thing has been the sub-Gervais “does it offend you, yeah?” type sneer for the longest time, really as tedious as it was inevitable.

i don't feel strongly about the banning and agree burrito was asking for it. but burrito has some good qualities, and any comparison to Gervais is cruel.
― bogo jumbo boba (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 16:29 (three years ago) link
reading the thread in question -- it seemed kinda a "gray area" to me, like I will hit the FP when I see fat-shaming most of the time, but ... it's kinda like going back to the Thatcher is Dead issue (from years ago) ... if a person in power is that horrible and oppressive, I feel less like policing people? But, enough other posters feel that is worth policing, so it is a relief to me (mostly in that I wouldn't want that decision to be only mine to make, because I have mixed feelings).
In other words, I'm not going to be posting the masturbating orangutan video in protest ... even though I do like burrito a lot

trump's insatiable gluttony - for attention, for power, for irresponsibility and yes, for terrible fast food - is an undeniable part of what makes him such a repugnant figure. given his tremendous and misplaced vanity and loathing for anything not Maxim-approved as beauty, it's not a huge leap from there to mock him as "fat" as an easy way to hoist him by his own petard. one of the many rhetorical errors there is that playing the insult game by Trump's rules lowers you to his piggish level and unnecessarily sideswipes any number of people whose only association with this dipshit is a BMI in the same zipcode.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 17:49 (three years ago) link
pointing out Trump's multilayered gluttony or infantile diet can be valid responses to his own attacks on other people's attitudes or his assessment of them physically. Chris Christie is not mocking anyone else for their body afaik.

I think it’s important that people remember that the bans under the new rules are temporary, lasting only seven days. unperson will be unbanned tomorrow, burrito just a few days later. Nobody’s “online existence” is under threat. The rules themselves are potentially quite temporary as well, since we all agreed to just try this out for six months and then see what we think.
