Sorry X ends, I meant. Tbh being born in 1981 being a millennial is taking the piss imo.

millennial begins in 1986. 1981-85 is a zone of nobodies and ghosts

xp the whole "when is Gen X" reminds me of that Mr. Show sketch where Bob and David argue about being of different generations because one of them is 3 years older than the other (or something like that) ...

sarahell, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 20:47 (three years ago) link

It’s so weird though because millennials span like 1981-1996 and I tend to think of myself as worlds apart from someone who was born in the 90s (absolute babies, obv.).

Xposted from the US pol thread lol.

Disagree, but probably because all my siblings and I are part of this generation and I don’t think of them as hugely different to me now that we’re all adults, compared to someone born in 2000 who has a completely different understanding of life in terms of what they grow up understanding and the difference in the world.

Which country yields the most ban-happy posters (Denmark excepted)?

pomenitul, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 20:51 (three years ago) link

this is how I break it down:

Boomers: 1946 - 1961
Gen X: 1962 - 1977
Orphans of Generational Ret-conning: 1978 - 1983
Millennials: 1978 - 1993

sarahell, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 20:51 (three years ago) link

Generation X was first applied to the current generation in 1952, and people finally twisted the spigot closed in the mid-90s.

maybe it's my Americanism here -- but I feel like someone who did not spend their teen years with a Republican ass-clown President is not really Gen-X. On the other hand, I feel like I've posted this same thing a half dozen times and don't want to die on this pedantic hill

Sorry to bring this back to serious moderation discussion, but I have 2 questions.

1) Why are the offensive posts still up? My understanding of the 'flag post' function is that they are intended to act as a non-public expression of 'this requires moderator action' e.g. the removal or editing of offensive posts (either with a note in the admin log, or to state in the edit 'racist post removed' if that context is required in-thread to explain further discussion).

2) The date of these racists posts was 24 September 2020. That was weeks ago. ILX moves so fast there have been half a dozen clusterfucks since then. Was any attempt made to yellow card or otherwise contact unperson to tell him, 'this racist post attracted 18 FPs'? When punishment is so divorced from action, how are people supposed to connect the two, in order to change behaviour?

I am not disputing unperson's temp ban. The post was racist, and almost certainly deserved a temp ban - *at the time it was made*.

What I am disputing is: 1) if 20 people thought a post was unacceptable, why is it still there? 2) this late-delayed, arbitrarily-timed random punishment feels like a sword of damocles, which has the effect of flattening all 'unpopular' opinions, rather than something specific and deliberate which lets members *immediately* know what actions are unacceptable rather than merely unpopular.

Branwell with an N, Thursday, 8 October 2020 08:03 (three years ago) link

I emailed Unperson immediately after he got 18 FPs (which for one post is virtually unprecedented) explaining that they were all for that one post and he shouldn't pull anything like that again - part of the warning system that was specifically requested. I agree the post itself should probably go.

He then got another four or five for the 'go slam your head in a car door' post which tipped him over the line. It wasn't especially arbitrary, it was pretty clear cut.

Normally a single post delivering that many flags would trigger a straight up tempban on the basis of the post's content alone, and maybe it should have in this case. We're new enough to the new rules as well and are still working out the parameters of warning vs straight up timeout.

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 October 2020 08:17 (three years ago) link

OK, thank you for addressing my questions calmly and reasonably. That makes a lot of sense, and puts my mind at ease.

I think if that's the case, then the incident was handled well, and kudos to you for good modding, DC. Thanks!

Branwell with an N, Thursday, 8 October 2020 08:19 (three years ago) link

So why when someone posts two anti-Semitic videos on two different threads, and a (older) Covid-19 conspiracy theory video on another, all of which are deleted having being brought to the attention of the mods - is this person is still posting, including on one of the same threads? But, instant ban for someone who says c**t a lot and apparently can't be trusted not to follow through on threats to stab Keir Starmer?

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Thursday, 8 October 2020 08:27 (three years ago) link

Anyway, back to the hilarious Admin Log bantz.

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Thursday, 8 October 2020 08:34 (three years ago) link

I haven't seen the AS video posts and didn't know they existed so will look into that. It may be under discussion right now, I don't know. There's a hell of a lot to keep on top of on this board and things do slip under the radar, one of the main reasons why the FP function exists at all.

Re: deleting the offending post, it's tricky, because if you delete and ban straight away then you get a lot of people saying "why were they banned? I can't see anything offensive", with the subtext that it couldn't have been that bad, and you end up back in the same dance.

I should point out that very few people get FP'ed for expressing an unpopular opinion - there is the occasional comedy FP for, I dunno, expressing a love of Mumford & Sons or a hatred of Gaz Coombes, but those obviously aren't taken into account if they get near the threshold (and if they're near the threshold at all there's clearly something else going on).

It is the way in which those opinions are expressed that gets people FPed. By way of context, there are only five people on the FP leaderboard AT ALL right now, and all of those people have a track record of addressing people or groups of people in a way that is regularly dismissive, disrespectful or belittling.

The other stuff doesn't need to be dredged up again and doesn't benefit anyone, least of all the person in question, who incidentally is still posting and like 99.9% of other posters nowhere near any kind of threshold right now.

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 October 2020 08:46 (three years ago) link

disturbed to find out you consider FPing Gaznostics is "comedy"

1000 Scampo DJs (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 8 October 2020 08:47 (three years ago) link

If stuff gets rightly and quickly removed for Jew-bashing or suchlike, obviously people who would otherwise FP it won't see it. This is better than leaving that shit around for everyone to look at.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Thursday, 8 October 2020 08:54 (three years ago) link

The poster in question decided to double down on it after people complained about the deleted videos by following up with a picture of Epstein and Trump. I agree he would easily have racked up FPs if people hadn't caught the posts in question quickly, but in any case that's beyond the pale.
