> the new guy Matt seems like a real dud

he's also in the Community episode (which aired last night coincidently) where they go to the Inspector Spacetime convention* during which he disparages competitive cooking programmes

(* and has also been in proper Doctor Who, which this is a pisstake of)

whereas sandy used to temper noel's weirdness, matt seems to be competing with him, but i'm enjoying it.

koogs, Tuesday, 6 October 2020 20:45 (three years ago) link

yeah i like him, he’s def still finding his feet

oh yes otm well said

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 October 2020 02:53 (three years ago) link

I appreciated them going a bit easy with the bread challenges this week. Soda bread is easy to make, and I personally appreciated the recipe ideas. I can heartily recommend zaatar in yer soda bread or savoury scone recipe. It's very good. They made bagels look possible as well (even if I do not want to eat a rainbow).

A few reviews have said that they feel Noel and Matt's energy is wrong for the show, that you need a calming influence rather than a hyper one, but I'm not sure that's the case anymore. When the show was new, the bakers were less competitive, and Paul was more hurtful in his comments, you needed lovely Mel and lovely Sue to dispense hugs and keep everyone focused. But now the competitors all know exactly what they're getting into, it's more competitive in some ways because people know what it can lead to for the right person, and Paul has dialed back the cutting comments. So I think a couple of imps getting in among it and annoying everyone can be a good thing. Whether they're the right people for that or not is a matter of debate. I will never stop saying that it should be Sindhu Vee up there instead of Matt Lucas, but that doesn't mean I don't like Matt Lucas.

trishyb, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 09:37 (three years ago) link

Despite several glaring poor choices for the use of his talents in the past couple of decades, I maintain Matt Lucas is a naturally funny bloke (unlike his partner in said poor choices). I'm enjoying him and Noel together to be honest.

Za'atar is magic stuff, also great sprinkled on fried/poached eggs and/or avo on toast.

chap, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 12:19 (three years ago) link

I’m finding Matt Lucas annoying, or at least sporadically annoying, but otherwise it’s the best season and set of contestants in a few years imo.

trishyb, check out the recipe for jo goldenberg’s bagels somewhere on the intermet, they’re incredible and easy to make, sort of halfway between a Montreal bagel and a North London blimp

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 22:12 (three years ago) link

recipe here https://recipeland.com/recipe/v/jo-goldenbergs-bagels-24576

i may try this myself when the weather cools down!

I think I’ve used this one because it has pictures to help

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 7 October 2020 22:34 (three years ago) link

Nice. I will do that. I've only managed a couple of loaves of the very simplest bread so far, but bagels would be fun, I think.

i feel like noel's really enjoying matt being there too

the thing with the hand at the start of the show was HILARIOUS

Walter Draggedman (stevie), Saturday, 10 October 2020 07:55 (three years ago) link

omg hand intro was great
lots of funny bits this week, i v much enjoyed Matt’s “80’s tv gameshow host looks to camera”

really want to try that salmon soda bread

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:30 (three years ago) link

Same. Sandwich flavoured loaves should always have been a thing.

v sad over this week’s elimination

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:44 (three years ago) link

I got teary with Marc's win! And letting his kids congratulate him was a lovely touch. (I like other Mark too.)

The ladies this season are hilarious, Lottie and Sura in particular, though Hermine's growing on me. Her self-effacing flying-by-the-seat-of-her pants ethos actually hides a great hand for detail, and this week finally cemented her patisserie skills (at least in my mind).

Fisherman's Worf (Leee), Sunday, 11 October 2020 00:34 (three years ago) link

Hermine seems like a badass baker

And agree, Mark E’s win was v touching! Didnt even clock he had a prosthetic until after he said abt losing his leg.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 11 October 2020 00:38 (three years ago) link

Is it just me or are they being very positive in their judging this time? I think it's great.

I agree with everyone who said white chocolate is stupid

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Saturday, 17 October 2020 13:30 (three years ago) link

same. i dont really like except when paired with irl chocolate YES I SAID IT WHITE CHOCOLATE IS NOT REAL CHOCOLATE

plus cooking with it is just cruel and unusual punishment

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 17 October 2020 16:43 (three years ago) link

only appropriate use for white chocolate is Trader Joe’s peppermint bark

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Saturday, 17 October 2020 17:03 (three years ago) link

i find it helps if you water it down...

this week's loser charming and funny on Extra Slice. they'll be missed.

koogs, Saturday, 17 October 2020 17:19 (three years ago) link

white chocolate is bullshit
ruby chocolate is surprisingly good tho

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 17 October 2020 17:46 (three years ago) link

the brownie challenge was ;_;

as someone who has made brownies that were so bad not even icecream could save them, i hug every contestant

i love Noel’d BAKING IS FOR LOSERS moment

Matt’s Aussie accent was pretty spot on too, i loled

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 17 October 2020 18:37 (three years ago) link

Y'all. Calm down about the white chocolate. It contains cocoa butter, it is chocolate, it is creamy and delicious.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Saturday, 17 October 2020 19:05 (three years ago) link

nah it’s shite

you are like a scampicane, there's calm in your fries (bizarro gazzara), Saturday, 17 October 2020 19:06 (three years ago) link

Idk why I thought brownies would be a more American thing? Maybe the ultimate USian thing is a peanut butter brownie. My fave.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Saturday, 17 October 2020 19:06 (three years ago) link

Anyway I don't think one person DIDN'T massively overdecorate their brownies thereby ruining them completely. Frosting?? ARE YOU MAD?

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Saturday, 17 October 2020 19:07 (three years ago) link

things i was not aware of being commonly known in American and lesser known in the UK: babka, smores and graham crackers in general. i gather britishers had other methods of dealing with the horrible masturbation epidemic.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 17 October 2020 19:10 (three years ago) link

It's fun to joke about graham crackers and shredded wheat and Kellogg's obsession with masturbation and cold-water baths (a fit subject for mockery imo) but there were parents who actually genitally mutilated their daughters based on his crackpot unqualified medical advice so as usual history is terrible and everything is complicated.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Saturday, 17 October 2020 19:16 (three years ago) link

fair point

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 17 October 2020 19:37 (three years ago) link

The brownies challenge was so frustrating to watch. YOU’RE ALL TRYING TOO HARD

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Saturday, 17 October 2020 19:54 (three years ago) link

but, as someone pointed out, it was a SIGNATURE challenge and your signature can't be 'plain brownies'

koogs, Saturday, 17 October 2020 19:58 (three years ago) link

That’s why it’s a bad challenge, like the fucking rainbow bagels. “We challenge you to mess around with something that is quite perfect in its simplest and most straightforward form”

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Saturday, 17 October 2020 20:01 (three years ago) link

Matt's bit about how Prue tells you to make a white chocolate cake then always says "It's a bit sweet isn't it? perhaps you could temper it a bit with some mud" killed me

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 17 October 2020 20:17 (three years ago) link

yes that was very otm

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 17 October 2020 20:36 (three years ago) link

Brownies are American and the best ones in the UK are made by Outsider Tart in West London.

My cream cheese brownies are the closest thing I have to a signature bake and if Brexit Pru told me they were inappropriately dry I’d have taken a scimitar to her.

santa clause four (suzy), Saturday, 17 October 2020 22:16 (three years ago) link

yeah i am not sure that paul & pru are to be trusted on brownies. “gooey center” isnt what i’d look for in a brownie. fudgey/moist but not gooey.

but i’d also not cover them in frosting & italian meringue either so

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 17 October 2020 22:39 (three years ago) link

cream cheese brownies sound amazing, suzy? will you part w the recipe?

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 17 October 2020 22:39 (three years ago) link

they do sound amazing

Dan S, Saturday, 17 October 2020 22:54 (three years ago) link

the pistachio/fig upside down brownie seemed like a great way of fancying it up and adding sweetness without going OTT. nuts are moderately common in brownies, pistachios just a little fancier, and the green of the nutflesh complemented the pink & green of the fig - which ended up one of the smallest toppings of anything in that round? and apparently tasted good enough that they forgot to be mad that it stopped the crisp top from forming!
