patreon guy says that in 5 years the 'the starving artist' will be a thing of the past because 'creators' will be 'in charge' - as a result of better admin tools and easy monetization on various platforms. it will be just as viable and respectable to be a 'creator' as a teacher, doctor or lawyer

seeing this thread bumped is like running into someone at the grocery store that you had a long and embarrassing heart-to-heart talk with while stoned out of your mind back in college. maybe it'll be interesting but it is definitely gonna be depressing

"the woman from pomplamoose sang a cover of "careless whisper" on trent renor's soundtrack for The Watchmen TV program" is a sentence that would have broken my brain ten years ago; we're all so numb

they have some moments. They are tight. Sometimes a little too tight. I dislike the clickbaity videos they make that are like what if cover of x but FUNKY, and then the arrangement is usually a little bit hack and not quite funky enough, even though the musicians play well.

that is awful but it's a different vibe from pomplamoose, less cutesy and more berklee
― na (NA), Monday, 1 May 2023 13:18 (ten months ago) link
yeah true. There's something that really bothers me about the way they manage to play funk exactly "right" and it still doesn't sound funky at all, like an uncanny valley thing.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 1 May 2023 19:03 (ten months ago) link
Scary Pockets is a bad vibe for sure, like a much smarmier Vulfpeck (they make me appreciate Vulfpeck more on every level fr).
I guess it's a net good that they've presumably introduced many people to the tasteful genius of Larry Goldings.

whoops, I went to the instagram account’s main page and it’s the description there
― mh, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:52 (ten months ago) link
I was interested in hearing this uncanny-valley funk, but less so when I realized they're cover albums with titles like Stank Face.
― Are You There God? It's a-Me, Mario (morrisp), Monday, 1 May 2023 21:06 (ten months ago) link
"Uncanny valley" probably gives it too much credit. It's not uncanny in any interesting sense. They kind of subtly have the vibe of a kids' band though. Jack has a lot to do with that.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 2 May 2023 15:12 (ten months ago) link
I mean it's like the least "stank" it could possibly get
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 2 May 2023 15:13 (ten months ago) link
makes sense
at its root the pomplamoose stuff is an exercise in competence, it's just so dry to me. you could maybe do something interesting with that by taking it in weird directions but there's no weird there
which makes it a bizarre approach to play funk covers
