Has anyone ever won on a sympathy vote?!

It's a weird world and there have been a lot of elections. Some probably qualify. There are interesting stories out there. Some wives have won (or been appointed to) seats previously occupied by their husbands.

Jean Carnahan, for example, was appointed to the Senate seat that her husband Mel won posthumously; she was not reelected.

If Mark Kelly wins his Senate race it may partially reflect a sympathy vote for Gabby Giffords.

If he is sick and survives, he'll sail to victory on a sympathy vote.

No. People hate him.

If he is sick and dies, another Republican will sail to victory on a sympathy vote (and a de-energized left who are already only voting for Biden begrudgingly).

No. Mike Pence is widely loathed within the Republican Party, and the Trump cult views him as basically a vestigial tail. Only the hardest of Bible-thumping psychos actually likes Pence.

I will say this - the emails I got overnight with subject lines like "Your chance to meet the President of the United States" are reading pretty darkly hilarious this morning.

This is all Trump's own fault for getting so many tests.

The world can be weird but our march toward the destruction of humanity -- something you'd think as spetacular -- as quite banal for much of the time.

I'd rather wait for narrowing gaps in polls from this point onwards.

Maybe God gave Trump covid so he'd win with a sympathy vote from the people that crucified his son. Weird.

COVID-19, welcome to the resistance.

Boris did well out of the sympathy vote for a month or so, which is all Trump really needs. Admittedly Boris was starting from a much higher position in the polls.

Matt DC, Friday, 2 October 2020 11:58 (three years ago) link

The Republicans are going to fight this month dirty as hell. We've seen nothing yet

"Boris did well out of the sympathy vote for a month or so, which is all Trump really needs."

He did not fight an election from a hospital bed.

As has been routine for months, Vice President Pence is tested for COVID-19 every day. This morning, Vice President Pence and the Second Lady tested negative for COVID-19. Vice President Pence remains in good health and wishes the Trumps well in their recovery.

Am I reading into this or does this imply that Trump WASN’T being tested every day?

xpost It sure sounds like it. Unless it's just a total coincidence that his daily test came up positive on the same day as and immediately after Hicks came up positive.

OrificeMax (Old Lunch), Friday, 2 October 2020 12:21 (three years ago) link

Yeah, on second thought, "sympathy vote" does seem unlikely, and not exactly part of Trump's appeal.

In this case: I hope he survives, but has lasting, life-long health consequences.

Guys remember that sympathy bump Hillary got in the polls in the week after she got pneumonia?

Oh wait...

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Friday, 2 October 2020 12:36 (three years ago) link

What are the odds of Trump contracting the 'vid if he hadn't run for president? Like you know we wouldn't be up to 200,000 dead under Prez Hillz.

OrificeMax (Old Lunch), Friday, 2 October 2020 12:38 (three years ago) link

Here's hoping he's one of the unlucky ones, and that his age and mass make him susceptible to at least a few of the bad symptoms. Though the rate we're going in this country, he's going to fully recover with no symptoms in a couple of days, but all his spraying at the debate will give it to Biden, who will then die.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 2 October 2020 12:41 (three years ago) link

But really, he is the president, our president, and they should really try absolutely everything to make sure he recovers. Windex, lemon Pledge, Dr. Bronners, bronzer, ear candles ...

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 2 October 2020 12:42 (three years ago) link

Leave Dr. Bronner our of this

Dr. Bronners will be used to wash his underwear after he shits himself so often. Also, brush his teeth, shampoo his hair, clean the sinks...

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 2 October 2020 12:48 (three years ago) link

I most recently used Dr Bronner's in a solution that I sprayed on my house plants to kill gnats. I assume covid is around gnat size, I say give it a chance.

lol they all hate Ted Cruz

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 2 October 2020 12:55 (three years ago) link

xp if getting him out of office meant getting him out of our lives I would agree, but enough of this guy already

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 2 October 2020 12:56 (three years ago) link

I want him to die because then he also can't be a presence after he leaves office. If he has a stroke or whatnot, they'll just downplay his deficits and have someone ghostwrite his tweets/statements (just like they do for many of them today). Nobody will care if he dies and someone zombies his account, Herman Cain style

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Friday, 2 October 2020 12:57 (three years ago) link

I hope he starts getting better, resumes campaigning hard, then has one of those sudden severe resurgences, then loses the election while in the ICU, then is indicted and handcuffed to his bed, then lives a few years longer under a cloud of criminality while under house arrest, then dies in solitude. And it's a couple of weeks before anybody notices.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 2 October 2020 12:59 (three years ago) link

I hope he holds a press conference and a turd runs down his leg

God bless the president and the first lady. If you pray, please pray for their speedy and complete recovery — and for everyone infected, everywhere.

This virus is horrific and merciless — no one would wish its wrath on anyone.

We must get its spread under control. Enough.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 2 October 2020 13:13 (three years ago) link

If he shits at a press conference we’ll be seeing videos of maga fucks shaking turds out of their pants at target in response to being asked to wear masks

joygoat, Friday, 2 October 2020 13:15 (three years ago) link

Just got up...stunning. Is this all based on Trump's tweet, or is there corroboration? I know that's awful to say, but how can you not think that?

imagine Rachel Maddow praying for Trump after a long day at work hyperventilating about all the lives he's destroyed

I definitely understand and sympathize with turning the other cheek and attempting to maintain basic human decency at a time when it's being rapidly siphoned out of us but Trump is where I personally draw the line with that mess. A disproportionate number of people have unnecessarily suffered and died over the past four years because of him. Let the 'vid chips fall where they may.

btw hold your ire for any newscaster or Dempol wishing him a "speedy recovery" or whatever, I know the man is a monster who absolutely deserves to die a painful death from this but come on you know they can't say anything else right now

besides Maddow has terminal Sorkinbrain what do you expect

frogbs, Friday, 2 October 2020 13:21 (three years ago) link
