Wherein We Elect Our Favourite Novels of 1910

Went for the Forster of course.

Rilke and Soseki are all I've read. The former is just one of the best reads, the latter is solid. I ought to get round to the Colette (a writer I've started reading this year), and Wodehouse's Psmith (again, only started recently).

The Rilke is one of my favourite things ever written in any genre. 'Tis a no-brainer.

Absolutely. If you're that talented yet only write one novel, it better be one as good as this.

Part of what I love about it, aside from the fact that it is clearly a poet's novel, is how it loses the thread without ever losing its way. The shift from 'objective' descriptions of the visible in an urban setting to a proto-existential reframing of the gothic (the Chamberlain's portrait) to a repurposed version of the Parable of the Prodigal Son is everything I want, compositionally speaking, from a novel (fuck plot imo).

I'm going to rule at these polls in about 50 threads' time. I'd probably be doing better if I'd ever found the prospect of Forster appealing - I know he's supposed to be wonderful but eh, it's just never seemed like it'd be my thing.

I own a couple of Colettes that I have yet to read but possibly not that one, and intrigued by the Rilke - didn't know he did a novel tbh.

He's sad and kind, is what I like about Forster. ymmv of course.
