4 MB of RAM, that should be plenty

calstars, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 11:22 (three years ago) link

I’m not a fan of the new red Music app icon in iOS 14

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Thursday, 1 October 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

I think it was also red in iOS 7. then it went white with iOS 10?

calstars, Thursday, 1 October 2020 17:23 (three years ago) link

so is apple going to make me feel stupid for not paying attention to the rumor mill and buying an SE two weeks ago instead of whatever the new smallphone is?

(probably, though i'm sure it'll cost more)

circles, Friday, 9 October 2020 02:06 (three years ago) link

well, it IS October...

Nhex, Friday, 9 October 2020 02:41 (three years ago) link

Talk of an iPhone mini out next week yeah

stet, Friday, 9 October 2020 09:33 (three years ago) link

The iPhone 12 Mini does look the business, physically smaller than the SE2020 but edge to edge, larger, higher res OLED screen. Like...any Samsung.

But it’s gonna be nearly twice the price of the SE, so there you go.

Michael Jones, Friday, 9 October 2020 10:11 (three years ago) link

Yeah, the SE2020 was the first time I've ever had the "latest thing". Usually it's last year's or the year before's model. It's nice, but I've dropped it more often in five months than I did any of the smaller handsets, ever. This could just be senility. Happy to go back to small and not-the-latest-thing if 12 Minis are going cheap in 2022!

Michael Jones, Friday, 9 October 2020 10:31 (three years ago) link

I sold my 11 last week to help finance the 12 mini, can’t wait

calstars, Friday, 9 October 2020 11:08 (three years ago) link

I like our HomePod way more than I thought, the mini is interesting

stet, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 17:04 (three years ago) link

i will pay extra to not have smart speakers in my home

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 17:19 (three years ago) link

We’re officially in the “but this razor has five plus one blades” era of iPhone sales.

rb (soda), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 17:51 (three years ago) link

it looks like a nice phone

mh, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 18:43 (three years ago) link

not sure they need four new models, but hey

mh, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 18:43 (three years ago) link

argh, is there any real certainty that they're doing another event next month (hopefully macbooks) or is it purely speculation? any idea when we might know?

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 19:24 (three years ago) link

Arm book by the end of the year

calstars, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 19:25 (three years ago) link

they have committed to at least one arm mac by the end of the year (not clear if that's announced or actually shipped). the general consensus it it will be a lower end macbook.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 20:09 (three years ago) link

thanks!

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 20:27 (three years ago) link

are they... are they made of arms? do you wear them on your arm?

Here's a version of my iPhone sizes sketch with the ghost of the original SE, if anyone wants that size comparison. #AppleEvent pic.twitter.com/De1y7KFGva

— Kate Matthews (@rhl__) October 13, 2020

new iphone mini is bigger than the original SE, but smaller than the current SE.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 20:43 (three years ago) link

looks... smaller than the original SE?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 20:48 (three years ago) link

Original SE is unlabeled in light orange/peach.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 20:49 (three years ago) link

Original SE is the peach one without a label in the middle

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 20:50 (three years ago) link

ah got it. yeah, i can get with that for sure; i've been hanging on to my 5se for five years or so but it's beginning to flag. gonna need to upgrade at some point in the future though; a top of the line model with applecare and case/charger/wallet looks like it runs about 1400.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 20:54 (three years ago) link

Ugh, they're killing me with the late release dates this year. I was planning on keeping my 6S for at least another year but I went swimming with it in my pocket the first week of September and have been limping along with my old 4S since then. Which means I don't even really have a phone since Verizon won't activate that one anymore. Good thing I never got rid of the land line!

early rejecter, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 21:07 (three years ago) link

Wah

calstars, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 21:30 (three years ago) link

This mini looks really good, yeah. The camera on the enormo one does as well though: the example shots are better by some stretch than the last round and in much more challenging light than the usual “desert at midday” stuff

stet, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 21:54 (three years ago) link

I've got to the New Battery (and new lightening port) vs New Phone point in the cycle. However, I'm not entirely sure my original X is lacking anything, but will probably end up buying a new one anyway.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Wednesday, 14 October 2020 05:51 (three years ago) link

SE now £399

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 14 October 2020 12:29 (three years ago) link

cheapest iPhone ever?

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 14 October 2020 12:29 (three years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Will it have a keyboard that doesn’t suck?

Will macOS run in an iPad so I can buy a portable Mac with a keyboard that doesn’t suck?

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Monday, 2 November 2020 21:37 (three years ago) link

Gotta wait til next year’s LED screens on the notebooks

calstars, Monday, 2 November 2020 21:45 (three years ago) link

Which laptop did you want, Ed? They’ve already dropped the butterfly keyboard on much of the range, haven’t they?

Alba, Monday, 2 November 2020 22:17 (three years ago) link

gonna get one of these because they keyboard is better https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/raspberry-pi-400-the-70-desktop-pc/

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 2 November 2020 22:23 (three years ago) link

Aren't those inevitably going to die horrible deaths by Keyboard Crud?

Nhex, Monday, 2 November 2020 23:04 (three years ago) link

I got one of the first 13” MBPs with the new keyboard and it is still too easy to double strike a key, the action I don’t mind. I never go anywhere without an external keyboard now, or anywhere at all this year.

TBF my ideal setup is probably an iMac + and iPad

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Monday, 2 November 2020 23:20 (three years ago) link

Fuuuuuck, the non-pro iMac can't be configured with more than 256GB of storage? FUUUUUUCK.

scampo-phenique (WmC), Monday, 2 November 2020 23:38 (three years ago) link

really? that's insane.

lukas, Monday, 2 November 2020 23:50 (three years ago) link

Seems to be? I have a 2017 with 500. That’s crazy if they’d do that. They can’t be assuming everybody would just have a bunch of external drives. I have a thunder bay w 4 drives hooked up and even then I’d rather have more than 256 on internal.

dan selzer, Monday, 2 November 2020 23:55 (three years ago) link

8TB.

by the light of the burning Citroën, Monday, 2 November 2020 23:56 (three years ago) link

Ah, that's for the 3.1Ghz version. The 3.3Ghz and 3.8Ghz models can go higher. Still, crazy.

scampo-phenique (WmC), Monday, 2 November 2020 23:58 (three years ago) link

Up to 2TB in the 3.3 and up to 8TB in the 3.8.

scampo-phenique (WmC), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 00:00 (three years ago) link

I’m just popping in to say the 12 Pro is the best iPhone I’ve owned since the 4 and it’s largely because it’s the same shape and it’s blue

shout-out to his family (DJP), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 00:11 (three years ago) link

yeah i got the regular 12 anda week in it's the most enjoyable-to-use device i've probably ever owned

Clay, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 00:34 (three years ago) link

I’m enjoying my 12 pro. I thought the X was the best when I got it but I’m really satisfied with the 12 pro. Straight sides are definitely better.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 08:03 (three years ago) link

I agree straight sides are essential if you don't use a case. I'm going to stick with my 1st-gen SE as long as possible. My wife just got the 2nd-gen SE and its slippery as heck without a case on it.
