no ennui here performative or otherwise, just a hunch. luckily it will be very easy to track whether said hunch is correct or not.

No particular instinct for how much the Trump tax news will resonate with rank-and-file voters. May depend on how much the Biden campaign chooses to emphasize it. There is a damaging headline for Trump (that he paid only $750) which is sometimes lacking in these sorts of stories.

With the exception of the Grab Pussy tape, it's never the initial headline that hurts Trump as much as the 4 weeks he spends making it much worse via unforced errors

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Sunday, 27 September 2020 23:51 (three years ago) link

Curious how Trump paid FL state income taxes, which do not exist

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Sunday, 27 September 2020 23:55 (three years ago) link

I'm just glad because this is probably the biggest thing to happen to potentially sway my mom (who voted for him in '16) to either abstain or vote Biden. She lives in a deeply red bubble in Alabama and gets most of her news from the morning redneck radio show on her drive to work but she's a CPA and accounting/tax code is the only realm in which she's capable of critical thinking.

Fetchboy, Monday, 28 September 2020 00:03 (three years ago) link

There may be--I hope--a few million people who voted for him because they sincerely believed he was a great businessman and that that was what the country needed (same argument that Perot, Forbes, and others--Romney too, I guess--used). Maybe it'll stick with them, and those votes will make a difference in a close election. (If the phrase "close election" even has meaning this time.)

clemenza, Monday, 28 September 2020 00:07 (three years ago) link

In the end, it's all going to be true. So what the heck is going to happen if Trump pardons' literally everyone of wrong doing?

Is that possible?

Do they have to already been convicted or can you like literally print up a 'get outta jail free' card?

earlnash, Monday, 28 September 2020 00:11 (three years ago) link

You cant preemptively pardon anybody, no. Essentially as I understand it accepting a pardon is admission of guilt.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 28 September 2020 00:23 (three years ago) link

Of course, you can dangle the prospect, but that as we all know is obstruction of justice, and no one ever gets away with that.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 28 September 2020 00:24 (three years ago) link

I agree this probably not going to get any trump voters to vote for biden, but I can see it depressing turnout a small but material amount among his alleged base of Obama 08/trump 16 white works by class voters.

I don’t know who’s considering what - Warren would 86 the filibuster and Bernie would pack the court and so on, but Schumer doesn’t want to eliminate the filibuster, no one in the moderate and elderly part of the Senate wants to pack the court, and there’s no chance they admit two new states on a 51-49 party line vote.

People are scaremongering about the Court if the GOP regained power but they’d be much quicker to create East, West and Central Dakota if they hold all three bodies again.

OK, so why does this make Ezra Klein credulous? I think he would largely agree with you on all of this.

OK, so why does this make Ezra Klein credulous? I think he would largely agree with you on all of this.

According to him, he does not agree with me, he thinks all of that is very much possible:
"I’m not going to call this a prediction, but it is a possibility."

"... and the vision of the Senate that he is convincing Democrats to embrace, the reforms he might, at last, convince them to make."

"The singular lesson Senate Democrats learned from the Obama years was McConnell simply wouldn’t let them govern if they retook the majority." - Ezra apparently has not heard Joe Biden speak?

etc.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Monday, 28 September 2020 01:44 (three years ago) link

OK, well, I think it's possible, too. I don't think it will be easy (cf. Joe Manchin's comments on court packing today), but I don't think it's impossible, as you seem to think so many things are. (Biden is still polling within spitting distance in Texas, btw.)

jaymc, Monday, 28 September 2020 01:52 (three years ago) link

I don't know how you can live in 2020 and think you know how everything's going to shake out.

Because I’m listening to Biden and Biden’s team and Schumer and Feinstein and Manchin and etc. tell me all the things that aren’t possible.

The Democratic Party that wipes away the filibuster, packs the court and grants statehood to DC and Puerto Rico is a fantasy.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Monday, 28 September 2020 02:42 (three years ago) link

Maybe they’ll need to nibble at the filibuster to pass a budget - but we saw how that works in 2013. The whole thing isn’t going away, but we’ll make sure the Pentagon budget can climb over $800bn.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Monday, 28 September 2020 02:44 (three years ago) link

OK. Then capture the Democratic Party and make it a reality. But don't expect any of those outcomes to be handed to you because you like them.

If "politics is the art of the possible", then the job of progressives is to make their policies possible. The way to do that is to accrue enough political power to find candidates and back them with enough votes to win elections. Believe it or not, this is somewhat less of a mountain to climb than fomenting a proletarian revolution.

But don't expect any of those outcomes to be handed to you because you like them.

That wasn't the question, the question was "why is Ezra Klein credulous."

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Monday, 28 September 2020 02:51 (three years ago) link

Ezra Klein may have said those things were possible, but he was careful not to say how possible he thought they were. iow, his credulity in this regard was played very close to the vest.
