xp tbh I think if it’s your own group then gallows humour is not only fine but acceptable, I couldn’t tell you the number of jokes about the famine I’ve made that I would consider deeply awful for idk a British person to make.

That's fair, table, I'm not trying to exculpate unperson here. He knows exactly what he's doing and the aim was to get a rise out of you, presumably because he finds little value in radical idealism.

Honestly nothing more of a boring edgelord opinion than racist joke -> it’s just a joke > fucking humourless lefties > why can’t you take a joke it’s not like my ancestors killed them or anything

thanks pom. and gyac, i agree with you, tbh!

The thing is, even if you performatively want to piss off another ILXor because you think they're a snowflake or whatever alt-right-adjacent buzzword you can think of, there are other, considerably less fraught ways of doing it.

If you're already operating from that headspace, your capacity for nuance might be shooting sparks.

**For the humorless leftier-than-thous in the room: all of this is jokes.**

Even though I am personally minorly harmed by the SALT cap, being in a high-tax blue state, there's really not that much justification for eliminating it other than a giveaway to donors tbh.

― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, September 17, 2020 1:21 PM (one week ago)

Because the SALT cap was politically punitive and legally unfair in terms of the logic of the tax code? Granted it isn't as ridiculously unfair as the marriage penalty vis a vis student loan interest, the fact the maximum deduction for student loan interest hasn't gone up in 20 years, and the absurdly low maximum pre-tax deduction for dependent care ... but if you think about the fact that the SALT cap doesn't affect business entities and only individual taxpayers, and think about who the donors _are_ ...your post just seems like it's missing important things.

this is the last thread on earth to be smug about anything in imo

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 28 September 2020 16:27 (three years ago) link

I don't want to enter the actual thread given its current negativity but oh my god I am pissing myself at NYCNative taking fgti's "I was in Gay Dad" comment seriously.

Yeah what happened in that thread? I read the first few posts and then scrolled down and felt like I'd gone through a wormhole

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Saturday, 3 October 2020 02:39 (three years ago) link

I was gonna correct him, but...ehh, it's Friday night. Let it lie.

but also fuck you (unperson), Saturday, 3 October 2020 02:42 (three years ago) link

To be honest it's a much better thread than I thought it was going to be (the potential for abuse apologism was high but seems to have been mostly avoided). But it got horribly personal and I don't want to step into that.

The main point though is lol lol lol lol

emil.y, Saturday, 3 October 2020 02:45 (three years ago) link

^ otm

ps to tabes, Branwell and fgti are both longtime ilx0rs who have changed display names (and IRL artistic pseudonyms), flambo is a working musician who was not the drummer in Gay Dad (& is not English)

I was going to make an effort to follow that thread but then that happened. Both of those posters can be quite interesting but perhaps a bit volatile, to say the least.

Erdős-szám 69 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 3 October 2020 05:09 (three years ago) link

God will someone, perhaps Sarahell, just message me who these people with the new display names might be? I've been here 06, started taking longer breaks in 2011, cut it out most by 2012...and then came back seven years later.

It's a weird feeling to feel like an old hand and a noob at the same time.

emil.y, that made me go and read the whole thread. Great thread actually. but yeah, loool

kinder, Saturday, 3 October 2020 13:52 (three years ago) link

Amazing turn of events in that thread! :-) Not Branwell making it about themselves again, but the Gay Dad 'J'accuse!' from NYCNative is just chefskiss.jpg

Dude, this is the third time in a few weeks that you have made a similar comment and I am starting to find this creepy.

Did it occur to you, that if someone on this board is weirdly obsessed with making things ~all about Branwell~, it might not actually be Branwell?

Branwell with an N, Saturday, 3 October 2020 14:38 (three years ago) link

But then again...

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 3 October 2020 14:56 (three years ago) link

That thread was *about* people's own experiences, personal relationships to art and where people's own "lines" are drawn. It's gonna have posts that are about the people posting them.
WW2 post was interesting btw, not something I'd explicitly thought about before.

kinder, Saturday, 3 October 2020 15:05 (three years ago) link

This is a perennial post asking posters to refrain from applying larger pathologies to Branwell's posts-- even as someone who felt as if a line was crossed in their recent discourse and (gently, I hope) sought to establish a boundary, I value Branwell's contributions here and feel that they are subject to far more armchair psychology than any other regular poster

Surprised to read that I'm considered volatile, to say the least!

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Saturday, 3 October 2020 16:31 (three years ago) link

Not a standard they themselves apply to others, of course.

seumas milm (gyac), Saturday, 3 October 2020 16:55 (three years ago) link

Yes, this would be more acceptable if all people involved would be willing to dial back the psychological and critical analysis of other people's posts.
