the important playoff adjustment of playing your best 5

ciderpress, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 17:12 (three years ago) link

18 total minutes during the regular season!

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 17:14 (three years ago) link

which i mean a. its a very small lineup theres not even really a power forward in it much less a center b. they didnt have that many games with all their guys healthy c. in the regular season youre trying more to stagger minutes and not tire your guys out playing against bigger guys d. the lineup doesnt make sense against all teams

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 17:17 (three years ago) link

BUT now none of that stuff really matters

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 17:17 (three years ago) link

still weird they didnt run it more tho

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 17:17 (three years ago) link

i didn't catch this:

The Celtics have played 12 consecutive games in these playoffs without the home team winning any of them. The streak included the last two games of Boston’s first-round sweep of Philadelphia, every game of the Celtics’ seven-round epic with Toronto in the second round and the first three games of the Eastern Conference finals against Miami. Boston’s second-round matchup with Toronto was the first in more than 600 best-of-seven series in N.B.A. playoff history in which the home team failed to win a single game.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 22 September 2020 22:29 (three years ago) link

sorry for the dim question but there is no 'home' team i thought?

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 22 September 2020 22:33 (three years ago) link

Not in any conventional sense of 'home team', but the NBA designates a home team for each game in the bubble and does the 'virtual fan' section via webcams, and pipes in appropriate crowd noises, music, and scoreboard messages to simulate a home game. but it's bunk.

two weeks pass...

https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/celtics/fouls-3-point-shooting-daniel-theis-has-room-grow-celtics

Theis racked up 219 personal fouls, the eighth-highest total in the entire league. That’s 5.5 fouls per 36 minutes of play, making him a threat to foul out each time he touched the floor. And he did foul out four times in the postseason, including once in 21 minutes, 34 seconds of court time during Boston’s season-ending loss to Miami.

I'm not entirely sure how you coach this away. Feels mostly like he was fearless under the hoop and contested better-known guys who got the call over and over. Maybe it's just that he needs another few years in the league to get more respect? Maybe he needs to put on more muscle so that he can stand his ground with less flailing?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 14 October 2020 17:06 (three years ago) link

theis definitely gets officiated like he's a nobody at times, but i think a lot of is just that as an undersized starting center there are still a bunch of matchups around the league that are going to result in very long nights. usually when i see him commit fouls i would call "bad" it's not a result of being too weak but more being a step too late on the contest. they ask him to do a lot in a thankless role on both ends of the court and to his credit he's more than happy to.

even if he were to cut down his foul rate, ideally he's not a guy you're playing more than like 28 minutes a night. i think they need to look at backup center again this offseason and find one more guy who is solid defensively in most matchups and can eat up some minutes.

feel like it's worth marking down for future ref that coach brad isn't a secret republican or something: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/10/20/nation/celtics-coach-brad-stevens-appear-with-his-doppelganger-pete-buttigieg-virtual-rally/

Is Kevin McHale the only Trumpy NBA coach? Even George Karl is a never-trumper:

Less than 20 days to go.

Get out and VOTE today!

For Biden. For Hickenlooper in CO. For Bollier in KS. For Greenfield in Iowa.

For these strong candidates and others that are going to return leadership, clarity and unity to our great country!!

what's the most sensible way to get the salaries to match?

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 23 October 2020 16:08 (three years ago) link

something like dipo and turner for hayward a young guy and pick(s)

...depending on dipos trade value which to me seems like it should be low since he was bad last year and is on the final year of his deal

lag∞n, Friday, 23 October 2020 16:13 (three years ago) link

or hayward could opt out and do some sort of longer for less per year sign and trade tho i know the rules around those are pretty stringent so im not sure itd work

lag∞n, Friday, 23 October 2020 16:14 (three years ago) link

turner and jeremy lamb basically gets you there and lamb would be redundant if they were getting hayward. the pacers should probably make boston take back tj leaf or someone to balance the money even more.

i just don't really know why the pacers would do it.

call all destroyer, Friday, 23 October 2020 17:42 (three years ago) link

if they got a team with massive cap space to absorb lamb's contract and take one of boston's 3 1st rounders, turner to boston and hayward to indy could still work

cointelamateur (m bison), Friday, 23 October 2020 18:01 (three years ago) link

like:

IND gets hayward ($34.1M), mykhailiuk (1.6M)

BOS gets turner ($17.5M)

DET gets lamb ($10.5M), #26 pick (BOS)

feels pretty balanced

cointelamateur (m bison), Friday, 23 October 2020 18:04 (three years ago) link

you've made the celtics happy as they're saving a shitload of money in that trade

call all destroyer, Friday, 23 October 2020 18:11 (three years ago) link

― call all destroyer, Friday, October 23, 2020 1:42 PM (thirty-six minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

cause theyre losing dipo so they need a perimeter creator, and they have two guys they want to play at center, also theyd be getting the best player in the trade... and hes a hoosier

lag∞n, Friday, 23 October 2020 18:21 (three years ago) link

obvs im a well knows proponent of turner to bos but its not like hes a superstar, he cld def be played off the floor in a playoff series just by making him guard the perimeter, his 3pt shot is slow which means it can prob be mostly shut down via concerted close outs, also he doesnt rebound, but still i do think he wld be nasty on the c's and him + theis would give them a very good flexible center rotation

lag∞n, Friday, 23 October 2020 18:25 (three years ago) link

i think it makes sense for both teams and the celtics have draft picks/young guys they can sweeten the pot with, the thing that wld give me pause were i the pacers is haywards recent injury history, and theyd prob need some sort of agreement on a new contract since hes in his last season, not sure if a sign and trade wld work here or what

lag∞n, Friday, 23 October 2020 18:28 (three years ago) link

i guess the oladipo thing going south and their otherwise decent team could motivate them to try something like this, but man idk brogdon/hayward/sabonis/warren/? does not really get me excited.

call all destroyer, Friday, 23 October 2020 20:39 (three years ago) link

but how are they supposed to put something together that does get you excited, thats prob a top 4 east seed if nothing else, and indy are on record as being anti rebuilding, so you have a pretty good team and try to work it out from there

lag∞n, Friday, 23 October 2020 20:46 (three years ago) link

i mean if they can find a better trade for turner obvs they take it but i doubt theyre getting back anyone better than gordo

lag∞n, Friday, 23 October 2020 20:46 (three years ago) link

yeah, i know, i think it’s a mental block for me. bunch of guys who i get are good but don’t love their games much.

call all destroyer, Friday, 23 October 2020 20:54 (three years ago) link

brogdon/hayward/sabonis/warren/?

this is a v good team! theyve got GOGA coming up at C, they can probably get at the v least a strong starting level rotation player if theyre trading oladipo.

cointelamateur (m bison), Friday, 23 October 2020 23:56 (three years ago) link

yeah, see above. it's a 4/5 seed type of team. really too bad what happened to oladipo, he was their chance to be a serious playoff team.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 24 October 2020 00:09 (three years ago) link

for sure

cointelamateur (m bison), Saturday, 24 October 2020 00:35 (three years ago) link

no one is ditching valuable role players for the privilege of paying gordon hayward $34M to put up 17/5/4

micah, Saturday, 24 October 2020 03:14 (three years ago) link

except maybe the knicks

micah, Saturday, 24 October 2020 03:16 (three years ago) link

ahem, its closer to 18/7/4 on 50/38/86 shooting splits

i think those numbers go up in a higher usage situation like indiana where he'd be the #1 wing as opposed to the #3. and that $34M is a lot, but it's also off the books in one year.

cointelamateur (m bison), Saturday, 24 October 2020 03:20 (three years ago) link

well if indiana were doing this they'd have to be getting a sense of what gordon's extension will be, obviously he's in no position to stay at $34M but my guess is it would be 3 years north of 20 which is a little scary imo.

i'll just put my bias out there, hayward's celtics career was insanely snakebit but i have watched him play basketball for the past two seasons and i don't expect him to be all that good going forward.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 24 October 2020 03:28 (three years ago) link

i get that, but he seemed to have turned a corner this year.

cointelamateur (m bison), Saturday, 24 October 2020 03:51 (three years ago) link

turning a corner at age 30? sure

micah, Saturday, 24 October 2020 04:43 (three years ago) link

brogdon was enticed to the pacers only a season ago, please ask him how he feels about playing second fiddle to a trump voter

micah, Saturday, 24 October 2020 04:47 (three years ago) link

look i dont even like gordon!!!! he's not s scrub player tho

cointelamateur (m bison), Saturday, 24 October 2020 04:52 (three years ago) link

no but he is overpaid and the cap might shrink.

micah, Saturday, 24 October 2020 08:29 (three years ago) link

sorry u have gordon hayward now not my problem

lag∞n, Saturday, 24 October 2020 15:43 (three years ago) link

but i mean he is an easy 20-5-5 on high percentages and is good at basically all basketball skills

lag∞n, Saturday, 24 October 2020 15:45 (three years ago) link

hes also a willing team player and so forth

lag∞n, Saturday, 24 October 2020 15:46 (three years ago) link

health has been bad and hes overpaid, tho prob wont be on his next contract

lag∞n, Saturday, 24 October 2020 15:46 (three years ago) link

hes a clear second option on offense who is also a very good playmaker, kind of guy who can fit in anywhere, positionally flexible etc
