If this had happened a few decades ago, when remote work & distance learning would not have been possible to nearly the extent they are now, my guess is that the degree of economic & social disruption (and probably # of deaths) would have been greater, and the public debate would may have been even more intense in certain ways.

Have we had a thread where we come up with conspiracy theories that are at once wildly fanastical but could hold just enough sway over people that they might believe them?
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 21 September 2020 17:24 (three years ago) link
I'd be really surprised if someone was pro-BLM, etc. And then turned out to have anti-mask/vaccine opinions
I'd be really surprised if there weren't plenty of people who fit this description.

A former colleague of mine fits that description, partially because he's a conspiracy nut in general. It's been sad watching him spiral into COVID-19 related paranoia, culminating in an outburst against Facebook and YouTube for "choosing what I can believe" when they took down the debunked conspiracy videos he wanted to share. Very. Very. Sad.

No, but there'd still be debates about what the right thing to do would be, even without culture war weaponization
Sure, but that's different from the "corona? lol!" attitude most of the artists discussed here are taking.

His Instagram Stories are wild.
He's also shared a video on there that claims the forehead temperature checks are actually a ploy to condition people to having guns pointed at their heads and that the infrared from the thermometers are irradiating people's pineal glands.

I interviewed R1ch4rd F41rbr4ss a few years ago and it was supposed to be for an oral history of I'm Too Sexy on its anniversary (!) and instead of being keen to chat about his experiences travelling the world at the peak of his fame he was so very keen to chat about Brexit and Scottish independence. Big supporter of both from a leftist perspective, local rights etc. Really bizarre experience.

Still makes her an idiot though, which fits the thread title even if she isn't on the level of Van.
I mean, it shows a stunning disregard for her fans to show up at a promo event with a mask like that, which is more infuriating to me than some dipshit tweeting stupid stuff.

Perhaps they don't understand how to properly wear the mask, or they find it uncomfortable/claustrophobic. As someone who's dealt with something called 'sighing syndrome' for decades now (look it up)...I can understand that anxiety.
I'm not gonna let myself get triggered every time I see someone not wearing a mask. I can wear my mask as responsibly as possible (with occasional slipups) and hope others follow. That's all I can do.
― DT, Thursday, 8 October 2020 05:03 (three years ago) link

― Covidiots from UHF (sic), Thursday, 8 October 2020 06:57 (three years ago) link
Don't understand how to wear a mask...after six months and google existing. Sure, i buy that.
I also buy that the average person I see wearing it incorrectly all coincidentally have medical conditions that make it harmful to wear. I'm sure the people riding coasters at Universal with masks on their chin are all medically compromised.
Like if you're going to wear it wrong, why bother with the charade at all? Droplets from nose is the easiest way to spread it. You aren't helping anybody if you don't cover it. It's like wearing a condom and poking holes in it cuz it's "more comfortable".
I hyperventilate sometimes during panic attacks and I had to wear mine 24/7 indoors while i stayed at the folks and my dad was recovering from surgery, even though I only visited the grocery store at the time. I managed.
I don't publicly shame or accost individuals who wear it wrong as maybe I don't have the full picture, plus rn I'll probably get stabbed. But yea, collectively? Fuck thst, I'll call it out as s practice.
It's the "what if there's an emergency" defense to defend pointless, disruptive texting during a movie, only with much higher stakes
― LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Thursday, 8 October 2020 10:00 (three years ago) link
I think the no nose covering folk I have seen are most likely people who pulled their mask aside for something, and forgot to replsce it. Like the 'wearing a mask alone in a car' thing, I think it's adequately explained by people being forgetful and distracted (as people tend to be).
