I was literally going to finally buy Homegrown on tomorrow. Thanks for the timely announcement Neil!

Strange that they're adding one track to the Roxy album.

Is that third disk... the acetate version of TTN???

Just a few slices of apple, Servant. Thank you. How delicious. (stevie), Monday, 21 September 2020 07:42 (three years ago) link

I don't know. The Joni Mitchell song throws me off on that. In Waging Heavy Peace, he writes:

It was an LP recorded in audio vérité, if you will, while completely intoxicated on José Cuervo tequila. We would not start recording until midnight, when we were so fucked up we could hardly walk. One night Joni Mitchell came in and did “Raised on Robbery” in the most sexy and revealing version that song ever had. She still refuses to let me release it. I don’t know what the hell she was thinking when she joined us and sang the song. It kicks ass. What the fuck was that about? It was funkier than anything she has ever cut. A total gem!

Okay I really want to hear that

I was under the impression that the "Briggs version" of TNN was going to be release, tyler do you know if this represents that tracklist?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:53 (three years ago) link

I've been following this on the Hoffman forums, sort of. It's as exhausting as one might expect.

Regarding TTN, they pointed out that all or almost all of the takes are not marked as previously unreleased, leading one to believe that this is not the Briggs version. Also, Neil was asked about it at one point and he said that version has been lost to time.

Cow_Art, Monday, 21 September 2020 16:13 (three years ago) link

yeah i'm guessing that the tonight's the night disc is the album presented in the order in which it was recorded (plus outtakes)? maybe?

tylerw, Monday, 21 September 2020 16:19 (three years ago) link

more takes from the session could be amazing, be curious how much they were mixing it up, playing it different ways from take to take

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 21 September 2020 19:10 (three years ago) link

yeah, it seems silly that neil (of all people) is so stingy about putting out session outtakes etc. really, even if he didn't want to release that kind of stuff in a big way, it'd be perfect for the Archives site. Like on the the anniversary of Zuma, put up a rehearsal take of "Cortez the Killer" or something.

tylerw, Monday, 21 September 2020 19:48 (three years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Pre-order is live for Vol II:

https://neilyoung.warnerrecords.com/neil-young-archives-ii-pre-order.html

Only $250 (LOL)

It seems insane they are only making 3000 of these.

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 16 October 2020 23:03 (three years ago) link

The Greedy Hand indeed.

It seems insane they are only making 3000 of these.

Honestly, I'd be shocked if the first one sold much more than that. I used to work for Warner Music and there were pyramids of those things stacked up at the annual holiday charity CD sale — they were maybe $20 for employees, and nobody went near them. (On the other hand, I got a copy of the Stooges Fun House box for $10, and bought two more for friends.)

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 16 October 2020 23:24 (three years ago) link

Hmmm, I wonder if that means there won't be a standard edition at some point. I can't imagine Neil leaving money on the table but then again, maybe he will. Anyway it's moot because I don't have a spare $250 lying around.

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 16 October 2020 23:27 (three years ago) link

I'm guessing there will be a standard edition that more or less matches the CD version of Archives 1.

I don't want that giant stupid looking box.

Cow_Art, Saturday, 17 October 2020 02:57 (three years ago) link

So I guess "subscribe to back in stock notifications" means that thing sold out already?

Dinsdale, Saturday, 17 October 2020 18:59 (three years ago) link

there will be a non-deluxe edition

tylerw, Saturday, 17 October 2020 19:07 (three years ago) link

1st edition sold out

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Wednesday, 21 October 2020 21:53 (three years ago) link

Apparently more are coming, Neil posted an apologetic note on the Archives site about how that pre-order was handled. But it reads like there may not be a non-deluxe edition. There's a whole big brouhaha over at the Hoffman forums.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 October 2020 21:58 (three years ago) link

I guess the next version will be exactly the same as the first pre-order deluxe edition, except a different color? Same content and same price, $250 though. I really would love a standard CD version for much less, like the first Archives.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 October 2020 22:00 (three years ago) link

But you know, the uncertainty is par for the course with ol' Shakey.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 October 2020 22:10 (three years ago) link

Obviously their tastes and idiosyncrasies are what make/made them who they were/are, but Neil and Prince, they just seemed utterly incapable of handling their catalogs in a fan-friendly way. Just always moving on to the next shiny object/technology/website.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 October 2020 22:19 (three years ago) link

yeah i always imagine dudes like that as being a worst case scenario combination of having complete and utter sign-off-on-everything final say over everything, while at the same time being completely incapable of being forced to pay attention/attend the actual boring meetings where they are actually needed to look at & sign off on stuff.

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Thursday, 22 October 2020 01:25 (three years ago) link

I really love the era being covered here and the contents are amazing, but I'm not paying $250 and chasing pre-order links for a limited number of these deluxe boxes. I'll wait patiently in the hopes that a significantly more affordable CD only version pops up soon.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 22 October 2020 04:41 (three years ago) link

It's extra-galling that so much of this is already legally out there.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 October 2020 05:04 (three years ago) link

Still not seeing anything that indicates there won't be a standard edition?

To me it reads as if the deluxe sold out so fast that they realized they can sell more posters and books for $250.

I want this so bad but there's no way I'm paying that much when I already have most of it.

Cow_Art, Thursday, 22 October 2020 11:29 (three years ago) link

I agree, that note from Neil is not clear on that point at all. I really hope there will be one and not that they are the best crowd from which to judge, but a lot of H0ffmanites are insistent this deluxe is the only version. Who knows though, probably some of those dorks wanting to keep up the value of the deluxe boxes so they can flip 'em later.

yeah tbh 13 unreleased tracks (excluding versions) out of a 10-disc box is a bit less than what i was hoping for

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:36 (three years ago) link

It's such a fuck-you to the fans. "Hey, thanks for buying Tuscaloosa and the Roxy set and Homegrown! Now you have the rare opportunity to buy them again! And for a lot more money, too! You're welcome!"

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:41 (three years ago) link

Yeah, that sucks, but he pulled the same thing with the first Archives box too.

I'm disappointed that the long rumored Odeon-Budokan double live thing is getting smashed down to a single disc.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:49 (three years ago) link

I think that one was double-live only in that it was going to be a double LP.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:53 (three years ago) link

I'm 100% positive Odeon-Budokan will be issued as an expanded standalone double-disc or boxed set. After Archives II sells out.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:54 (three years ago) link

XP...so it could feasibly be an 80-minute CD.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 October 2020 14:54 (three years ago) link

Although... checking that tracklist, that wouldn't appear to be the case, unless Cowgirl & Cortez are jumbo jams. Iirc, the circulating boots have more electric stuff.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:02 (three years ago) link

odeon budokan here is designed as a single LP, one side acoustic, the other electric. it's about 45 minutes long which is about 45 minutes too short.

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:06 (three years ago) link

fuck this, I'm out. gonna take my copy of Homegrown and go sulk.

messing with the Odeon show, wtf

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:11 (three years ago) link

ha, well, I think that this is the live LP that was prepped back in 76 and left unreleased. but yeah, he should be putting out an entire spring 76 w/ crazy horse show.

tylerw, Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:16 (three years ago) link

is anyone really buying this for those 13 songs? how many of those are just alternate versions?

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:17 (three years ago) link

my understanding is theres a bunch of live/alternate versions of previously released songs, as well as 13 songs "that have never been released in any form"

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:27 (three years ago) link

i can't believe they aren't doing a basic cd box set, so dumb

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:34 (three years ago) link

I can't believe he's not putting out a 25-LP edition of this.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 22 October 2020 15:41 (three years ago) link

i can't believe his website won't let you copy and paste the text that's on it

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:06 (three years ago) link

Yeah the 13 "new" songs is really misleading, One Eye Open otm. There are 13 new songs that have never been released in any for whatsoever, and I think I want to say like 58 alternate and live versions that have been previously unreleased. So I still think it's a pretty cool set, considering the era covered. But as with pretty much anything Neil does, there is a base level of confusion and disappointment that comes with anything he announces.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:11 (three years ago) link

alternate versions in neil's case can be pretty meaningful too, for example you could say that "white line" off homegrown was already a released song on ragged glory but they might as well be different songs

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:31 (three years ago) link

In the midst of this, there's a Greendale live archive thing out soon no one's talking about.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 October 2020 16:45 (three years ago) link

49 previously unreleased alternate versions and 13 "new" songs (most of these have not been bootlegged before either). i mean, it's not nothing!
