I don't know. The Joni Mitchell song throws me off on that. In Waging Heavy Peace, he writes:

I was under the impression that the "Briggs version" of TNN was going to be release, tyler do you know if this represents that tracklist?

I've been following this on the Hoffman forums, sort of. It's as exhausting as one might expect.

Regarding TTN, they pointed out that all or almost all of the takes are not marked as previously unreleased, leading one to believe that this is not the Briggs version. Also, Neil was asked about it at one point and he said that version has been lost to time.

yeah i'm guessing that the tonight's the night disc is the album presented in the order in which it was recorded (plus outtakes)? maybe?

more takes from the session could be amazing, be curious how much they were mixing it up, playing it different ways from take to take

yeah, it seems silly that neil (of all people) is so stingy about putting out session outtakes etc. really, even if he didn't want to release that kind of stuff in a big way, it'd be perfect for the Archives site. Like on the the anniversary of Zuma, put up a rehearsal take of "Cortez the Killer" or something.

Honestly, I'd be shocked if the first one sold much more than that. I used to work for Warner Music and there were pyramids of those things stacked up at the annual holiday charity CD sale — they were maybe $20 for employees, and nobody went near them. (On the other hand, I got a copy of the Stooges Fun House box for $10, and bought two more for friends.)

Hmmm, I wonder if that means there won't be a standard edition at some point. I can't imagine Neil leaving money on the table but then again, maybe he will. Anyway it's moot because I don't have a spare $250 lying around.

Apparently more are coming, Neil posted an apologetic note on the Archives site about how that pre-order was handled. But it reads like there may not be a non-deluxe edition. There's a whole big brouhaha over at the Hoffman forums.

I guess the next version will be exactly the same as the first pre-order deluxe edition, except a different color? Same content and same price, $250 though. I really would love a standard CD version for much less, like the first Archives.

But you know, the uncertainty is par for the course with ol' Shakey.

Obviously their tastes and idiosyncrasies are what make/made them who they were/are, but Neil and Prince, they just seemed utterly incapable of handling their catalogs in a fan-friendly way. Just always moving on to the next shiny object/technology/website.

yeah i always imagine dudes like that as being a worst case scenario combination of having complete and utter sign-off-on-everything final say over everything, while at the same time being completely incapable of being forced to pay attention/attend the actual boring meetings where they are actually needed to look at & sign off on stuff.

I really love the era being covered here and the contents are amazing, but I'm not paying $250 and chasing pre-order links for a limited number of these deluxe boxes. I'll wait patiently in the hopes that a significantly more affordable CD only version pops up soon.

I agree, that note from Neil is not clear on that point at all. I really hope there will be one and not that they are the best crowd from which to judge, but a lot of H0ffmanites are insistent this deluxe is the only version. Who knows though, probably some of those dorks wanting to keep up the value of the deluxe boxes so they can flip 'em later.

yeah tbh 13 unreleased tracks (excluding versions) out of a 10-disc box is a bit less than what i was hoping for

I'm disappointed that the long rumored Odeon-Budokan double live thing is getting smashed down to a single disc.

I think that one was double-live only in that it was going to be a double LP.

I'm 100% positive Odeon-Budokan will be issued as an expanded standalone double-disc or boxed set. After Archives II sells out.

odeon budokan here is designed as a single LP, one side acoustic, the other electric. it's about 45 minutes long which is about 45 minutes too short.

ha, well, I think that this is the live LP that was prepped back in 76 and left unreleased. but yeah, he should be putting out an entire spring 76 w/ crazy horse show.

is anyone really buying this for those 13 songs? how many of those are just alternate versions?

my understanding is theres a bunch of live/alternate versions of previously released songs, as well as 13 songs "that have never been released in any form"

Yeah the 13 "new" songs is really misleading, One Eye Open otm. There are 13 new songs that have never been released in any for whatsoever, and I think I want to say like 58 alternate and live versions that have been previously unreleased. So I still think it's a pretty cool set, considering the era covered. But as with pretty much anything Neil does, there is a base level of confusion and disappointment that comes with anything he announces.

alternate versions in neil's case can be pretty meaningful too, for example you could say that "white line" off homegrown was already a released song on ragged glory but they might as well be different songs

In the midst of this, there's a Greendale live archive thing out soon no one's talking about.

49 previously unreleased alternate versions and 13 "new" songs (most of these have not been bootlegged before either). i mean, it's not nothing!
