oh, i am totally one of those posters that gets annoyed at posters in canada but that is by coincidence. there were just a couple of instances of them posting the same stuff 10 times a day, o'er multiple days. I got annoyed, who cares. We should all be banned.

don't think this thread has made a convincing case for why Fred should have been banned

Dan S, Monday, 21 September 2020 00:37 (three years ago) link

sorry we didn't arbitrarily spend all weekend combing two-three years of data in 24 hours time to put together an Exhibit A for you

(ulysses asked for some examples because he was genuinely curious - he didn't ask us to put together a legal brief)

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Monday, 21 September 2020 00:41 (three years ago) link

plus, Fred is currently unbanned and has posted recently but has stated he has no desire to come back.

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Monday, 21 September 2020 00:41 (three years ago) link

yeah I don’t think that is the intended function of this thread.

Maybe the 102 fp’s can do the convincing.

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Monday, 21 September 2020 00:43 (three years ago) link

whatever, he posted in earnest whether or not you liked his posts

Dan S, Monday, 21 September 2020 00:50 (three years ago) link

Not sure what earnestness has to with it, there’s no shortage of deeply sincere troublemakers in the world.

Anyway it’s nothing to litigate, it happened.

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Monday, 21 September 2020 00:57 (three years ago) link

earnestness matters a lot to me, it's why I like ilx

are you Oscar Wilde

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Monday, 21 September 2020 01:06 (three years ago) link

i mean it is kinda rude, though, it's like having a friend crying and telling you this person is constantly making your life hell, and responding "really? name 15 exact things she's done and I need it in the next five minutes, or else I will not believe you"

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Monday, 21 September 2020 01:06 (three years ago) link

:) I did see the 1952 film recently

Dan S, Monday, 21 September 2020 01:09 (three years ago) link

fred's bans were both ages ago. if you really want to understand why, the only way is to go back and read all the posts about them from that time. nobody else is going to put together a history of it that's much use. certainly the time to litigate it would have been back then --- everything looks better in vague hindsight without all the posts in front of us.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 21 September 2020 01:57 (three years ago) link

Part of the way genocide jokes work is a) it matters who is making them (e.g. few people think it's unacceptable for Jews to joke about the Shoah); b) insofar as genocide is the epitome of human nihilism, it screams 'desacralization', i.e. nothing can ever be sacred again after such an event, including genocide, so we might as well make fun of it for cathartic purposes. The second condition was definitely met here as far as I'm concerned, it's the first that is still up for debate, at least in the context of ILX.

I have no idea what this in relation to

seumas milm (gyac), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:54 (three years ago) link

Quick derail re: yr post, pom: I just don't agree with the premise that *anyone* can make fun of genocide after its event as elucidated in yr point b, and joking about indigenous genocide if yr a settler is ghastly, afaic. i don't want to assume unperson's ethnic background, but I don't think my stance is one of leftist sanctimony run amok— it's one of not wanting to poke at wounds that are still festering due to the hegemonic political ideology in the US.

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:54 (three years ago) link

but if that makes me a "PC fag" or a humorless twat or whatever, then so be it.

i'd rather be a humorless fag than taking the piss about genocide. call me crazy.

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:57 (three years ago) link

Oh nm I’ve caught up, yeah, fuck anyone from the outgroup joking about genocide, like fuck me, how hard is it to not trivialise something that still has impact up to and including the present day?

seumas milm (gyac), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:58 (three years ago) link

xp tbh I think if it’s your own group then gallows humour is not only fine but acceptable, I couldn’t tell you the number of jokes about the famine I’ve made that I would consider deeply awful for idk a British person to make.

seumas milm (gyac), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:59 (three years ago) link

That's fair, table, I'm not trying to exculpate unperson here. He knows exactly what he's doing and the aim was to get a rise out of you, presumably because he finds little value in radical idealism.

thanks pom. and gyac, i agree with you, tbh!

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Friday, 25 September 2020 14:06 (three years ago) link

The thing is, even if you performatively want to piss off another ILXor because you think they're a snowflake or whatever alt-right-adjacent buzzword you can think of, there are other, considerably less fraught ways of doing it.

sock solipsist (pomenitul), Friday, 25 September 2020 14:10 (three years ago) link

Even though I am personally minorly harmed by the SALT cap, being in a high-tax blue state, there's really not that much justification for eliminating it other than a giveaway to donors tbh.

― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, September 17, 2020 1:21 PM (one week ago)

Because the SALT cap was politically punitive and legally unfair in terms of the logic of the tax code? Granted it isn't as ridiculously unfair as the marriage penalty vis a vis student loan interest, the fact the maximum deduction for student loan interest hasn't gone up in 20 years, and the absurdly low maximum pre-tax deduction for dependent care ... but if you think about the fact that the SALT cap doesn't affect business entities and only individual taxpayers, and think about who the donors _are_ ...your post just seems like it's missing important things.

To be honest it's a much better thread than I thought it was going to be (the potential for abuse apologism was high but seems to have been mostly avoided). But it got horribly personal and I don't want to step into that.

ps to tabes, Branwell and fgti are both longtime ilx0rs who have changed display names (and IRL artistic pseudonyms), flambo is a working musician who was not the drummer in Gay Dad (& is not English)

I was going to make an effort to follow that thread but then that happened. Both of those posters can be quite interesting but perhaps a bit volatile, to say the least.

Erdős-szám 69 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 3 October 2020 05:09 (three years ago) link

God will someone, perhaps Sarahell, just message me who these people with the new display names might be? I've been here 06, started taking longer breaks in 2011, cut it out most by 2012...and then came back seven years later.

It's a weird feeling to feel like an old hand and a noob at the same time.
