Out of interest, Gear, how many people voted?

OASIS - "Live Forever" (282 points, 16 votes)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000009H63.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

"I finally brought myself to buy Definitely Maybe today for the first time, guiltlessly, while reminiscing 'bout those wonderful times once upon a time ago, back in the fifth grade. IT IS STILL BRILLIANT. They will live forever, a pox on you!"

-- Francis Watlington

The number of ballots in the end was somewhere around 130. Hard to say from my email inbox; some people sent their singles and albums ballots together and some sent them separately.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:38 (nineteen years ago) link

oasis has such an ugly logo. why did britpop bands brand themselves like detergent?

amateur!!st, Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:39 (nineteen years ago) link

130 people rather, xpost

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Because most of them were functional and mundane.

xpost - thanks Gear.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 7 November 2004 02:41 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah "functional" is about as much as i can say for blur and oasis. (i guess i like oasis marginally better, if only because at least they don't have pretensions to satire.)

MY BLOODY VALENTINE - "When You Sleep" (284 points, 13 votes, 1 first place vote)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002LRJ.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
from Loveless

"Today I was listening to Loveless and when "When You Sleep" came on, I couldn't stop imagining Prince singing it. And then I started clapping on the backbeat, and really wanted to dance."

THE CURE - "Pictures of You" (286 points, 17 votes, 1 first place vote)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002I1U.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

"Personally, I am ecstatic that I live in a society where people think that the lyrics "Looking so long at these pictures of you/But never held on to your heart/Looking so long for the words to be true/But always just breaking apart my pictures of you" can sell digital cameras."

-- Dan Perry

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 03:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Man, "O.P.P." got fucking robbed. I think I had it at like #5 or so and I thought it was a top 40 shoo-in.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 7 November 2004 03:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm impressed that the 4 people who have so far said they voted for Shame On A Nigga avvounted for ~100 of the 235 points that it got. Votes are evidently powerful in this poll. THe fact that people wield this power by note voting for the Wu Tang, however...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 03:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't believe I didn't vote for "Pictures of You"! I must have missed it on the list. This would be at least 15 points higher.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 7 November 2004 03:18 (nineteen years ago) link

26 in my list, which in retrospect is probably too low.

daft punk's #1 single of 1997 too!

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 November 2004 03:40 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm going to finish off the first fifty singles tomorrow afternoon/evening. Keep the discussion going, such as it is.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:00 (nineteen years ago) link

'Angel', by Massive Attack was 21 on my list - I find it odd that it only tied for 79. Still, this is all before 30, and it's mostly stuff I didn't vote for, so I probably shouldn't complain.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:13 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd be curious to see how this would have broken down if it were separated into American voters and British voters.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Not looking good for "Hey Jealousy".

And the low scores for "Belfast" and "Like a Motorway" are more than a little shocking. I thought the latter would almost definitely be top 20. And does "Belfast"'s low placing mean that "Chime" didn't make it at all? Oh well.

"O.P.P." making it is good stuff though.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Sunday, 7 November 2004 06:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Damn, seven of my top 30 have appeared already.
I think the low placing for "Belfast" and "Like a Motorway" are an indication that there are other songs by the same bands that earned a lot more votes. Same for "When You Sleep" (I hope).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 7 November 2004 07:31 (nineteen years ago) link

"'Rendez-Vu' = immediate satisfaction."
- Eric H

I don't even remember sending comments, but I know I could've done a whole lot better than that. I should at least mention that the fuzzy friction of the last chord in the flamenco's four-chord progression in the intro is like pulling what you think is a pubic hair out of your mouth and discovering it's pull-n-peel red licorice.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 7 November 2004 09:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Gear!, I'm willing to write comments for anything that appeared in my top 20 -- e-mail me if there are particular ones that need writing.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 7 November 2004 09:22 (nineteen years ago) link

fuck, i'm pretty sure i had OPP at 3, this is a travesty. OPP!!

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 7 November 2004 10:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Eric H., Some of the comments are being taken from old ILM posts.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 7 November 2004 14:15 (nineteen years ago) link

"Red Alert" is so much better than "Rendez-Vu" that it isn't even funny. Why wasn't that one nominated???

SAINT ETIENNE - "Avenue" (291 points, 14 votes, 2 first place votes)

http://www.saint.etienne.net/ec/Avenue.jpg

Search: Nearly everything, but especially "Avenue". It is not only my single of the 90's, I think it might just be my favorite single of all time full stop. I don't really have any rational explanations of why, it just is. St. Etienne are magical.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:23 (nineteen years ago) link

jaymc: due to some computer viral issues right now, it's taking forever to search through my yahoo e-mails at the moment. searching through ILX for comments seems to be quicker for me. Starting a new job on Monday with a better computer so then that won't be an issue, but for the first 50 I think I'll do it like this. Send your comments for anything that has yet to appear!

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Damn, I guess the Curse of the Split Votes is going to strike Saint Etienne in the mid-60's?

SAINT ETIENNE - "You're In A Bad Way" (294 points, 17 votes, 1 first place vote)

http://www.saint.etienne.net/ec/Youre_In_A_Bad_Way.jpg

1.Saint Etienne - “You’re In A Bad Way”

"This is how retro should be done. This is how kitsch should look, and sound. It should bounce like a space-hopper and be mixed like a
beautiful cocktail. Sipped by a girl of dubious-origin on a beach,
while a ropey porn-movie plays in the background."

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:42 (nineteen years ago) link

i still can't get over how low "Hypnotize" is, I think that's the only one so far I voted for, and I mighta had that one top ten.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

It's gotta great beat, but I have to admit the only lyric I can remember is "no car payment."

Only "Girl/Boy Song" so far (although I had votes for different Wu-Tang, Biggie and Destiny's Child songs.)

SAINT ETIENNE - "Nothing Can Stop Us" (297 points, 14 votes, 2 first place votes)

http://www.saint.etienne.net/ec/Nothing_Can_Stop_Us.c.jpg

The first single to feature Sarah Cracknell, unless I'm mistaken, and still one of their best cuts. Not sure about the cover art, though!

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

This is getting ridiculous.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

My 12" doesn't look like that!

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, what an unlikely occurance...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

That cover is horrendous.

JEFF BUCKLEY - "Hallelujah" (304 points, 18 votes)

http://www.liquidgnome.com/JeffBuckley/images/hall.jpg

"First time I listened to it I was lying in bad with the flu at 3 in the morning. It's just TOO lovely, and made the feel even worse than I did at the time, which was pretty bad!"

- Johnney B

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:09 (nineteen years ago) link

A maxi-single is an American term for a 12" or CD EP, isn't it?

The UK issue was like this:

http://www.saint.etienne.net/ec/Nothing_Can_Stop_Us.jpg

but less blurry.
