You know, like Steve Alan, Woodie Alan....

I used to mix up Townes Van Zandt and Van Dyke Parks a lot. I mean, not the music, but those triple name things.

Same here, that's why I was amazed when Van Dyke Parks ended up working with Brian Wilson again. I was thinking, "but isn't he dead?"

Peter Paul Reubens and Paul Reubens. Pee Wee? Dutch painter??? I get it all mixed up.

Justin Farrar (Justin Farrar), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:44 (twenty years ago) link

A bit dated, but I still confuse John Hiatt and John Prine.

The Stands and The Stills

it's the 'The St...s' thing I tell you. What's with all these bands with names that have similar shapes?

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:06 (twenty years ago) link

I used to know the difference between the Vibrators and the Buzzcocks, but forgot, then learned it again, then forgot again.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:20 (twenty years ago) link

Squarepusher and Lifterpuller.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:23 (twenty years ago) link

The Stands and The Stills are different bands? Shee-it. I don't just get them mixed up cause of their names, their posters are almost identical, too!

Super-Kate (kate), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:27 (twenty years ago) link

I used to confuse Clan of Xymox and Xmal Deutschland....until I realized that I didn't really like either, so ultimately, it didn't matter.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:29 (twenty years ago) link

Physicist Albert Einstein and musicologist Alfred Einstein...for a time I thought physicist Albert wrote essays about Mozart in his spare time, I think I saw a still of him holding a violin from Einstein on the Beach and that threw me.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:31 (twenty years ago) link

Years ago, a friend of mine told me he found an album by "Marc" Almond
and said, "...it's really laid back, kinda fake jazz, nothing at all weird or perverse on it. Is it his early stuff?" He had an album by Mark Almond. We laughed.

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:46 (twenty years ago) link

Jan Jelinek, Philip Jeck, and Jandek.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago) link

Busta Rhymes and Buster Poindexter,

Modest Mouse and Mouse on Mars

Akercocke and Agalloch

And as a teenager I thought for a while that Chuck Dukowski from Black Flag had a side career writing gritty literature about drunks in LA. Did I have him confused with Bukowski, or Henry Rollins?

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

it took a few months of listening to records by skull control and skull kontrol to realize that they weren't the same band.

Matt B. (Matt B.), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:24 (twenty years ago) link

oh and Kaito and Cayto

I know which one's which. Kaito's from Norwich and has gurls in it, and Cayto are mad Scottish types. But when they come up in conversation, it gets very confusing indeed.

and if you throw Cato into the conversation as well...

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:28 (twenty years ago) link

Burning Airlines/Jets to Brazil

(just the airplane theme and the fact that I used to confuse their old bands - Jawbox and Jawbreaker as Aja mentioned)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago) link

I've noticed a lot of people say Scissor Girls when they mean to say Scissor Sisters.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:31 (twenty years ago) link

>I always get Built to Spill and Guided by Voices mixed up.<

For me it was always Built to Spill and Shudder to Think.

And I think there are about four different techno guys named Amon or Tobin who I always think are the same person, plus one in Cibo Matto, but I forget their names right now.

Also, Atlanta Rhythm Section/Amazing Rhythm Aces always confounded me.

And yeah Jawbox/Jawbreaker; I will third or fourth or fifth that one.

There are many more, which I may remember eventually.

chuck, Monday, 19 April 2004 22:32 (twenty years ago) link

Oh yeah, Camel/Caravan too.

chuck, Monday, 19 April 2004 22:34 (twenty years ago) link

I've noticed a lot of people say Scissor Girls when they mean to say Scissor Sisters

I'll make it a trifecta by putting the Sun City Girls into this mix of name confusion...i get all three mixed up.

Stephen Bishop/Elvin Bishop
Frut/Frost/Frigid Pink
Hoobastank/Nickelback/Lincolnpark
Mudvayne/Puddle of Mudd/Stereomud/Mushroomhead

I have no patience, however, for people who confused Rocket From the Tombs with Rocket From the Crypt. That makes no sense to me at all!!

chuck, Monday, 19 April 2004 23:38 (twenty years ago) link

Curt (cgould), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago) link

I bought my first Nick Drake album, after confusing him for Nick Cave. An enviable mistake.

doug watson (solid air), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:50 (twenty years ago) link

I Mother Earth/Our Lady Peace

Symmetrically similar names aside, both bands were (are?) also fairly boring '90s grunge-progsters, both were from around Toronto, and both made music that was largely forgettable (altho OLP's minor hit "Superman's Dead" was enjoyably annoying.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago) link

I always think of someone else when I see David Sylvian's name, but I don't know who. (NOT Syl Sylvain, although that seems like it would be a reasonable slip.)

Actually, I do have trouble keeping apart some of the NY Dolls/Dead Boys guys, and remembering who was in which band... Arthur Kane vs. Cheetah Chrome, etc.
