Maybe I need to. Ghost is another band I discovered through ILM. I can't remember where exactly the love was, but I think in one of the rolling pysch threads? There was a lot of love for Hypnotic Underground, and I really don't see it. It's soft, but not in a caressing, warm way. Just soft in an easy listening, adult contemporary, Wilco, unoffending way. It sounds like it's entirely lacking passion.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Give it a couple more listens in the right sort of circumstances Mickey.

Still haven't got round to getting the DVD. Anyone else have it? (and did I ask that already??)

is the Terrastock show in fact going to be their last one ever?

It better bloody well not be!

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:59 (eighteen years ago) link

this is not the steely dan thread. this is the ghost thread.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:00 (eighteen years ago) link

i have the dvd. i watched it once. the cd it comes with is pretty cool.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:01 (eighteen years ago) link

That DVD/CD set is the one thing I'm missing. Soon, soon...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:02 (eighteen years ago) link

NickB, maybe. Everything on it seems turned down a notch. The freak outs just don't freak out like a good Can freakout, the jams don't really jam enough, they just sort of noodle, and the parts that should rock just don't bring the ROCK.

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:03 (eighteen years ago) link

where did it say terrastock would be their last show ever? I thought it was just the band's "only US appearance this year." that would suck if they were calling it quits--especially since I've never seen 'em live yet. I for one thought Hypnotic Underworld was great. And the DVD is worth seeing, though some of it is a bit "fans only," like the video footage that's so dark you can barely see a thing. The accompanying CD has some excellent bits as well, though i haven't given it too much listening time...

Windy and Carl sent out their weekly update today with a note about T6 at the bottom from Jeffrey o' SecretEye, who's organizing, and in it it's clearly stated that Ghost's show is a 'farewell performance.' :-/

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 23:56 (eighteen years ago) link

And from the band's site itself:

23 April 2006
"Terrastock6" Providence, Rhode Island USA
*This is the only one and last performance in the states.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 23:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Hmm, bad news. Makes me very happy I saw them when they were here in like late '04. Not amazing live but still a fucking classic band.

Sean Braudis (Sean Braudis), Thursday, 13 April 2006 02:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Crap, why does it have to be their last performance in the USA? I never got to see them! :(

Harpal (harpal), Thursday, 13 April 2006 04:20 (eighteen years ago) link

:-/ Regrettable but alas it happens. I never got to see Disco Inferno and I'm still jealous of those who did (though admittedly they never toured the States, but still).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:26 (eighteen years ago) link

i like hypnotic underworld. but i like the Lord of the Rings parts better than the Weather Report parts.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:50 (eighteen years ago) link

this fucking sucks. Ghost was easily the best show I saw last year.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 13 April 2006 15:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I've been on the verge of buying "Hypnotic Underworld" (for 5 quid) for ages but I bought the "Free Tibet" album and didn't like it so I won't bother now

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 15:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I liked Snuffbox Imminence better than Hypnotic Underworld. I haven't heard their really old stuff. I don't understand why Ghost is mentioned in the same conversations as Boredoms or AMT.

dude, dada, totally the wrong first album to get.

But it wasn't the first one i got, the first one I got was the first one - errrrrr, the first album that is, which I liked and still like to some extent, tho not as much as I thought I did

Ghost has had Boredoms members.
AMT has had Ghost members ... I think?
AMT has a collaborated with Ey3.

lama rabi rabi and hypnotic underworld are the two strongest albums. and they are the most amonduul2-ish albums as well.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:22 (eighteen years ago) link

What Amon Duul 2 era?

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Wolf City?

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I like Snuffbox, Lama Rabirabi, and Hypnotic Underworld the best, in that order. Second Time Around and the s/t both have some good jams, too. None of the live stuff has thrilled me completely (Temple Stone or the DVD) but they were a highlight of Terrastock 5, although that doesn't really translate on the DVD. My favorite parts of the set were left out, like the incredible "Forthcoming from the Inside."

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

My favourite era! Well, one of! (xpost)

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:38 (eighteen years ago) link

post-yeti? yeah, okay, wolf city-era.

none of the stuff on the dvd compares to the show i saw in philly after snuffbox came out. they were FULL ON ROCK that nite, and completely on fire. one of the greatest shows i've ever seen.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:42 (eighteen years ago) link

The Terrastock 4 show -- indescribable. They had only about ten minutes and they made the most of it beyond description.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:43 (eighteen years ago) link

sadly, the only ghost album i would destroy would be the damon & naomi one. and i like damon & naomi fine. okay, maybe that was more of a damon and naomi album. soooo boring. (i keep forgetting how old this thread is. i'm probably repeating myself a hundred times.)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:49 (eighteen years ago) link

they were fucking fantastic in NYC last year or the year before, whenever that was.

the unbearable lightness of peeing (orion), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:07 (eighteen years ago) link

the reason to buy hypnotic underworld, if anyone needs one, is right here in this snippet from my review:

"Anyway, if Ghost's new Hypnotic Underworld is an ever expanding lotus blossom that grafts past prog desires and the will to propagate on its petals whilst consciously demanding collective pre-history antidotes and anecdotes in exchange for post-war/post-'68 letdowns and lessons learned that have forever addled the brains of impressionable seekers, then so be it. I'm in. History is written by the victors, but the beauty of desolation and dreams of rural idylls far from the bomb blasts are written by those who died for farce."

Classic!

I really liked the dark temple footage in the DVD... and the accompanying CD is their most out-there improv stuff.

This "last US show" thing makes me very sad, I was lucky enough to see them on their 1998 tour and they played this long crazy noisy thing with hurdygurdy that sounded like something off of Batoh's second solo EP...

Drag City's news section says this: Neil Hamburger, High Llamas, Ghost and King Kong (plus...shhh! Joanna Newsom. There — we said it) are all busily toiling away, soon to surface with records we’ll pitch to you in the future. Will it be 2006 or 2007? Who knows! The path to post-production is a long and tangled one and although we are the gambling sort, we’ve long since given up trying to guess when the art’s ready to come out of the oven.
