I got a small Shuffle today to carry around - much better size than my old 20GB, so I can carry an ipod+keys+phone and other stuff without any trouble and without requiring a man-bag.

POST-SCRIPT: This is exactly why I settled on the Shuffle. In the end, the tiny size won me over- here's to living backpack-free! I made my first playlist in iTunes (6 hours of high-quality MP3s and the damn thing isn't even full) on Friday, and have been rocking it all weekend. Best 2 bones-and-change I've spent in ages.

do you guys not have coat pockets? I mean, I would love to have shuffle w/ an order of magnitude more space... even if that means giving up on the screen, but the space is sooooo tiny!

The Shuffle lives in a coat pocket right now! If you read upthread, you'll see that I was lamenting the size of my MP3 Discman, as it was an early, comparitively bulky model, and pretty much required the use of a man-purse.

Sony Unveils Line of Cheaper Flash Memory Walkmans

I thought it was interesting the way those new sony models were shot down in practically identical fashion on both engadget and slashdot. I suppose there's a good deal of readership overlap, but still illustrates how Sony still has a long way to go, clever display technologies or no.

I have a 40GB pod. I have about 20gB in my i-tunes library on my work laptop. The hard drive is full but....the laptop is about to be replaced with a new one, so I'm going to have to archive the library to portable hard-drive. I will then install i-tunes on the new laptop and fill up the other 20gB. Will I have any problems when I change computers in terms of the i-pod being tied to one computer? Something Fishfingers and Ed said upthread rang an alarm bell. Ed?

I won't have to reformat the flipping thing to get it to work with the new computer will I?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:10 (nineteen years ago) link

No, you will have no problem at all, you made need a utility to pull the tunes off the iPod onto the new laptop. but you shouldn't have any problems.

I wear a coat about seven days a year. Ten if we get a cold snap.

**you made need a utility to pull the tunes off the iPod onto the new laptop**

Thanks, Ed.
I can do that via my external hard-drive, right? Just get tunes onto it and then load em back onto the new laptop.

Won't there be a problem when I reinstall the ipod software on the new laptop? I'll be using the same registration number as before, or something? (You can tell I've only had my i-pod since Valentine's day!)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:11 (nineteen years ago) link

No. The only thing you will have to do is set up your music store account, if you have one, and de-authorise the old computer.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Ta. I don't have a music store account, so should be OK.

I've just got an Shuffle from my gf - I love it. I must be disciplined enough to not just listen to stuff I like on it.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:38 (nineteen years ago) link

ed, you might know this - how would i convert an omg (that *stupid* propietary sony sound file format) to a workable file that i can actually *hear*? we recorded a night we did on a sony minidisc and tried to export it to pc and it converted it to this idiotic kind of file and now we've lost the entire recording.

stelfox, Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:45 (nineteen years ago) link

The easiest way is to play the minidisc into the computer.

Do you know what file format is?

Ed (dali), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:47 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah the thing is that it's deleted the original recording and turned it into a ".omg" file. omg files seem to be a proprietary sony format which absolutely nothing that i know of will read (not as in "omg wtf", although they are aptly named) , but i thought there might be a way to crack it and convert it.

stelfox, Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

i thought i could get into it because i have programs that will red ".ogg" files but this has beaten all my sound software and it's a fucker because it was a really good night that we'd all like to keep a recording of!

stelfox, Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I presume that that must be an ATRAC file. I can't find any software on the sony site to manipulate them. Can you load the file back onto the minidisc?

Ed (dali), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

i can't get it back on there at all because it wasn't my minidisc, i have a mac and i don't have soundstage or whatever the hell the stupid program was that did this in the 1st place. i just got the file from my friend over slsk and thought i might be able to find a way to convert it into something workable. the only way i can figure it is by playing it thru soundstage on a pc coz i don't believe they do it for macs anyway, rerecording the whole damned thing, then playing that back thru a griffin imic and recoding it as an MP3 which is one hell of a longwinded way round what should be a simple thing to do.

stelfox, Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

problem with the atrac format, not only is it proprietary, but they don't even support all operating systems. The long winded way might be your only option. I always used to take the laptop down to gigs and record on that. My soundman ex housemate swears by a nicam stereo vhs recorder. 4 hour tapes and good dynamic range.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:13 (nineteen years ago) link

this is totally infuriating... why the hell would they market something as an *easy* way of getting minidisc files to computer and then make it so bollocking useless and complicated to rectify!? and tom bleeding cruise is on the telly. this is close to the worst saturday night ever!

one month passes...
so the ipod mini doesn't come with an ac adapter. does that mean that if i want to recharge it (duh), i have to buy a separate adapter for $25?

also what happens if you want to sync your ipod with itunes but you have more songs on itunes than can fit on your ipod?

no. you can charge off of your computer

You have to set up iTunes to "choose" which "songs" to "put" on your
"iPod".

do you charge it off your computer via usb or something else?

"thanks"!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Am, When you've plugged your ipod into the computer, a little logo will show up in Itunes. Click on it to see a list of everything currently on your ipod. You can click on songs (multiple by doing the usual ctrl button maneuver) and delete them that way. You can also go into your Itunes library and click on multiple songs and drag them over to your ipod logo. Ta da! More songs on your ipod, but not all from the library.

so what's the best case for an ipod mini? or do i not really need a case?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:31 (eighteen years ago) link

iPod mini is the worst of the iPods!
really? but there are only really two ipods. (shuffle doesn't count.) i don't want to spend like $300 on the regular ipod.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Dude its like $70 more for SO MUCH MORE room! The shuffle is nice because of the form factor.

Are you affiliated with an educational institution at all or know someone who is? You could try to get the nice education discount.

it's actually like $100 more. i did get the edumacation discount, but i still got t he ipod mini, because that's really stretching my budget as it is. and i can keep switching stuff in and out of it anyway.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:42 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean i only did this because my fucking discman broke and it seems dumb to get a new discman. but the ipod shuffle thing is definitely not what i want.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:42 (eighteen years ago) link

No, the mini is the chick ipod. Seriously, Apple caught on to what Sony has known forever, girls like small & cute electronics. If I look at the electronics that my girl geek friends own, and the ones that my guy geek friends own, there is essentially no overlap outside of powerbooks.

Anyway, I own a shuffle- that + Shure e3cs = happy. I don't need the display to tell me what the current song is because I generally already know what ever songs I've put onto it, or I can wait until I get home to look up one if it's bugging me. It depends on what you listen to, I think... I have a smallish set of music that I want to listen to when I'm walking to or from work, which is when I usually use the Shuffle.
