Those Peter Sellers movies, ones like "Mrs. Pollifax-Spy" or "The Secret of My Success", may have been the high-brow "low-brow" movies of their day. While the Boomer teens saw the latest Elvis movie, I picture the 40something parents putting on coat and tie, nice earrings and hat, and going out for a bit of fun to see an "adult" movie before heading over to Sam's Diner on the way home for a cup of coffee.

tbh i didn't realize until just now looking it up that Elvis was still starring in narrative features up until '69, so i think generally your theory could totally work for a lot of the dorky MOR-looking 60s comedies itt!
