Never had gumbo but Ethiopian bamya alicha is unquestionably delicious, whether you like or okra or not.

IMO, it's not gumbo without okra (mbundu ngombo in Bantu). I only make a vegan gumbo perhaps once a year, but I also grew up in a family that did battered okra on a monthly basis. One gets used to the mucilage.

If it's slimy you're doing it wrong.

Would imagine the chewiness of an earthworm to be more offputting than the sliminess. Err, speaking as a vegetarian...
― Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 16 September 2020 19:17 (three years ago) link
I would probably eat a cooked earthworm that had been reared in hygienic conditions that I was absolutely sure was carrying no parasites. Maybe deep fried or something.

HAve been putting a handful of okra into my stir fry /stew things for the last coupl eo fyears. Not sure if that's the best way to eat them but do think it works ok.Sliced into small slices and just bunged into the mix. Still haven't fully rationalised what needs to be cooked longer than what but think it works out ok. Only drag is how long chopping everything takes.BUt the okra bit gets done really quickly.

Apparently roasting okra makes it not slimy, and it roasts just like any other vegetable.

wow @ harbl’s pic. far far okra!!!
i had to look up what far far/farfar is and it is a thing you drop into hot oil and the "okra" or whatever shape it is will puff up and it becomes a tasty fried snack. also called "fryums."
