Sorry to interrupt, Bobbins crew, I won't be here long.
I just wanted to ask Karl - that Peder Mannerfelt track you posted, I think that's the one that people are having such extreme reactions to? What *is* that?!?!?
I genuinely think it's amazing, and I want to hear more things that are like this, specific thing! It honestly sounds like being inside the engine hall at the Kew Bridge Steam Museum when all of the Beam Engines are in steam, and pounding away, the WHOMP of the beam that shakes the whole hall, the WHOOSH! of the pistons, the chattering of the pumps or the bobbins or whatever the individual engine is powering. It is the most machine-like thing I have ever heard outside of YouTube videos of "Germany's Most Giant Engines" and it is total audio stim and I want more.
(*I know nothing about genres or bobbins - the only other things that give me the same stimming sensation are Dustin Zahn - Stranger To Stability (Len Faki Podium mix) and maybe bits of Koenig Cylinders - Carousel. Can we have a thread maybe of "techno that genuinely sounds like being inside a Beam Engine"?)

idk of much that sounds like that specific bizarre sound, but i think of that track as catering to djs like cera khin, VTSS, mama snake, etc that are playing high bpm 90s rave sounds and are back into playing trance and gabba (i believe nina kravis has also been playing stuff like this though i haven't heard a set of hers in a long time.) peder mannerfelt comes from a pretty leftfield POV so the straight-ahead banger vibe of this track is not necessarily typical of him.
cera khin remixed a track by him last year

i disagree with some of the takes on this thread that seemed to imply the original track in question was like big room berghain type stuff (its possible no one said this and i'm just conflating multiple posts into one take that was never taken)--yes its big room but it really isn't tasteful at all, it's intentionally obnoxious in that classic rave style and it belongs in a warehouse imo. it's designed for djs that see themselves as playing stuff as a reaction against the tasteful techno in-crowd, though obv it could be that as soon as nina kravis is playing stuff like this it is the in-crowd style

Thanks for the info, Karl, that's really useful contextualisation.
The remix you posted doesn't really do the same thing for me. It has... well, it has more than one note? (Too many notes! Too many notes! Who am I, the emperor of Austria?) What really appealed was the relentless, one-tone no-melody machine element as much as the cheesy raveness. (Tho I am a fan of obnoxious rave, to be sure.)
But I checked out another of Peder's tracks through YouTube reccommendations, called 'Peder Mannerfelt - Psalm And Songs And Voices' and even though it had a completely different vibe (not a banger at all, far more slithery and infernal) it had the same no-melody relentlessness to it, so perhaps I should just explore further into his work.

i have a feeling you might enjoy rrose's music, their production style is extremely unique and based on building tracks by layering waveforms to create interesting harmonics.

this has nothing to do with the context i described, just thought it might appeal to you

"yoga house" is such an excellent and accurate descriptor; is it original to this thread?

too bad there isn't a spotify for descriptors. you could add it to a descriptorlist. or maybe tell glenn about it?

Recently ordered this compilation EP, which scratches my itch for whatever one calls the current attention to tracks inspired by tasteful late 90s tech house records that cost a fortune online. A solid selection to pack for your next double shift at Greggs: www.soundcloud.com/subwax-bcn-distribution/helmet_01

yes their album is good. i liked this track from last year as well, a worthy contribution to the micro-sub-genre of digeridoo techno.

before we move on, and before funktion one gets too unfairly associated with the big spaces no one wants to be inside of and some tunes no one's in the mood for these days, can i just say that a small stack of 'em in a small room sounds infuckingcredible for dancing all night without ear fatigue.

Another track by them was posted upthread, but this from Animistic Beliefs— the B1 of their latest— blows the rest of the EP out of the water. Came on in the car yesterday and I about lost my mind driving to the dog park.

and just a note about the conversation above: I don't particularly like Marc Houle, was just bringing him up as an example. I do think that the "noisy" aspects of his sound, particularly evidenced on records like Drift, were a little more interesting to me from a compositional standpoint... but a lot of his dancefloor singles have always sounded like shit to me.
but it's worth saying that I *never* liked Audion ("Mouth to Mouth" is nauseating imho) or Simon Mobile Disco or Switch. It's just not my thing.
As for yoga house, that's been a tendency in the Bay Area for years and years, it's repellent stuff.

― the late great, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 15:16 (three years ago) link
I really know what I like and dislike at this point lol, particularly when it comes to more straight-up floor-oriented music. I've always kind of been an opinionated jerk about this sort of stuff, as I think anyone who remembers my posts from like 2006-2009 can attest, but really, I just want everyone to have a good time doing their own damn thing when it comes to dancing—.
In this case, I honestly love a lot of what Mamasnake and similar DJs do in their sets— I adore a lot of gabba and hard trance, for example. I think much of my problem is just with individual tracks, such as that Mannerfelt bit or "Mouth to Mouth"— I just don't feel like those tracks are very dynamic or interesting, merely propulsive.
