yeah the lead is annoying af but those crispy swinging claps that come in on the 2 and 4 after the drop are so nice

Lol I’m never posting links to anything in this thread.

But I am really sick of the clean reverby techno that just sounds like it’s made for bomb disarming scenes in Tom Clancy movie adaptations or something... probably sounds better at Berghain or something. I know I’m probably the last person to care.

brimstead, Monday, 14 September 2020 18:30 (three years ago) link

It just sounds like a piss take to me. Who am I to argue with the masses!

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Monday, 14 September 2020 18:31 (three years ago) link

my thing with big room techno is just that big concrete dance clubs / sex dungeons with funktion one sound aren't even on the menu for a rich person right now. i mean they were always off the menu for me. and i'm over wanting to go to one anyway. it's just not attractive to me right now. i'm thinking of ostgut ton, i'm thinking of a recent ellen alien / matrixxman boiler room set i saw as an example. ellen was playing that kind of thing and it just looked so silly to me over streaming audio; i'm sure it would have been amazing in a concrete sex dungeon. idk what i'm really saying, sort of being randomly critical i guess. i still enjoy anything that anyone posts to this thread on some level.

it's sort of like i guess i'm rooting for that sound to brighten up a little bit (from halfway around the world). like i'm rooting for most of the air-tight burning man 'deep nature' sound to fracture into a million little pieces and turn into something with some life in it that isn't wallpaper music for graphic design execs.

maybe i'm just mad i can't go dance anywhere

frankly most of it is too weird for me (150 is the new 130 apparently?)

the Audion one I love is "The Pong"

I'm really excited to see how lockdown and not-going-out affects dance music production, that sound map is talking about does sound great when you hear it out but it's not really the same when sat by the window waiting for the world to get back to normal

can't believe i posted the bobbin of the year yw yall

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 15 September 2020 03:43 (three years ago) link

Sorry to interrupt, Bobbins crew, I won't be here long.

I just wanted to ask Karl - that Peder Mannerfelt track you posted, I think that's the one that people are having such extreme reactions to? What *is* that?!?!?

I genuinely think it's amazing, and I want to hear more things that are like this, specific thing! It honestly sounds like being inside the engine hall at the Kew Bridge Steam Museum when all of the Beam Engines are in steam, and pounding away, the WHOMP of the beam that shakes the whole hall, the WHOOSH! of the pistons, the chattering of the pumps or the bobbins or whatever the individual engine is powering. It is the most machine-like thing I have ever heard outside of YouTube videos of "Germany's Most Giant Engines" and it is total audio stim and I want more.

(*I know nothing about genres or bobbins - the only other things that give me the same stimming sensation are Dustin Zahn - Stranger To Stability (Len Faki Podium mix) and maybe bits of Koenig Cylinders - Carousel. Can we have a thread maybe of "techno that genuinely sounds like being inside a Beam Engine"?)

Greta Grebo (Branwell with an N), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 13:25 (three years ago) link

idk of much that sounds like that specific bizarre sound, but i think of that track as catering to djs like cera khin, VTSS, mama snake, etc that are playing high bpm 90s rave sounds and are back into playing trance and gabba (i believe nina kravis has also been playing stuff like this though i haven't heard a set of hers in a long time.) peder mannerfelt comes from a pretty leftfield POV so the straight-ahead banger vibe of this track is not necessarily typical of him.

cera khin remixed a track by him last year

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 15 September 2020 14:11 (three years ago) link

i disagree with some of the takes on this thread that seemed to imply the original track in question was like big room berghain type stuff (its possible no one said this and i'm just conflating multiple posts into one take that was never taken)--yes its big room but it really isn't tasteful at all, it's intentionally obnoxious in that classic rave style and it belongs in a warehouse imo. it's designed for djs that see themselves as playing stuff as a reaction against the tasteful techno in-crowd, though obv it could be that as soon as nina kravis is playing stuff like this it is the in-crowd style

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 15 September 2020 14:22 (three years ago) link

Thanks for the info, Karl, that's really useful contextualisation.

The remix you posted doesn't really do the same thing for me. It has... well, it has more than one note? (Too many notes! Too many notes! Who am I, the emperor of Austria?) What really appealed was the relentless, one-tone no-melody machine element as much as the cheesy raveness. (Tho I am a fan of obnoxious rave, to be sure.)

But I checked out another of Peder's tracks through YouTube reccommendations, called 'Peder Mannerfelt - Psalm And Songs And Voices' and even though it had a completely different vibe (not a banger at all, far more slithery and infernal) it had the same no-melody relentlessness to it, so perhaps I should just explore further into his work.

i have a feeling you might enjoy rrose's music, their production style is extremely unique and based on building tracks by layering waveforms to create interesting harmonics.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoLwgsx7hWA

this has nothing to do with the context i described, just thought it might appeal to you

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 15 September 2020 14:44 (three years ago) link

"yoga house" is such an excellent and accurate descriptor; is it original to this thread?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:24 (three years ago) link

too bad there isn't a spotify for descriptors. you could add it to a descriptorlist. or maybe tell glenn about it?

do the descriptorlists fight the automobots for control of unicomocron?

Recently ordered this compilation EP, which scratches my itch for whatever one calls the current attention to tracks inspired by tasteful late 90s tech house records that cost a fortune online. A solid selection to pack for your next double shift at Greggs: www.soundcloud.com/subwax-bcn-distribution/helmet_01

glad to see blawan still ruling it, i kind of unfairly stopped paying attention when he started ternesc because my eyes tend to glaze over when ppl start talking about modular synths

i liked the karenn album that came out last year (?). this was my favorite track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARF-wf4egJ4

definite echoes of cristian vogel and related wonk, but also an deep space acid techno element that reminds me of stuff like emmanuel top

the late great, Thursday, 17 September 2020 14:18 (three years ago) link

yeah these are both killer, i will have to catch up with karenn

emmanuel top comparison otm

yes their album is good. i liked this track from last year as well, a worthy contribution to the micro-sub-genre of digeridoo techno.

before we move on, and before funktion one gets too unfairly associated with the big spaces no one wants to be inside of and some tunes no one's in the mood for these days, can i just say that a small stack of 'em in a small room sounds infuckingcredible for dancing all night without ear fatigue.

andrew m., Thursday, 17 September 2020 14:29 (three years ago) link

agree

also nice to be able to talk to someone next to you without screaming while still feeling chest punching subs
