remarkably poorly drawn gun hands in that Speedtrap poster.

Fire Sale (1977)

The depiction of Byron Stewart at center bears essentially no resemblance to him, and appears to be just a racist caricature. I suspect someone told the artist about his subplot - Arkin is a basketball coach who adopts a 6'8" Black orphaned teen to win games - and went "got it, black guy!" Ugh.

"Hmm, I wonder what o_O subplot the black character is involved in"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_Sale_(film)
The low self-esteemed Russell wants to expand the store and marry his girlfriend, while Ezra needs money to adopt an orphaned 6'8" African-American teenage boy named Booker T (Byron Stewart). Ezra needs Booker T. to play on the high-school basketball team he coaches because he has won a total of two games in seven years as a coach and is in danger of losing his job.

Those Peter Sellers movies, ones like "Mrs. Pollifax-Spy" or "The Secret of My Success", may have been the high-brow "low-brow" movies of their day. While the Boomer teens saw the latest Elvis movie, I picture the 40something parents putting on coat and tie, nice earrings and hat, and going out for a bit of fun to see an "adult" movie before heading over to Sam's Diner on the way home for a cup of coffee.

tbh i didn't realize until just now looking it up that Elvis was still starring in narrative features up until '69, so i think generally your theory could totally work for a lot of the dorky MOR-looking 60s comedies itt!
