my sense is that it was mostly respectful but marcus certainly did not like those slanted social media posts

*singing hallelujah poorly but with great feeling*

Brad Stevens said he believes Gordon Hayward will be back at some point in the ECF, but he doesn’t know when.

what a great series just finished
what a great series coming up

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 12 September 2020 15:38 (three years ago) link

minutes, game 7: tatum 44, kemba 44, smart 43, liberation brown (is there a better name in the history of bball?) 43. if hayward does nothing more than pull some of those numbers down, that could be huge.

fact checking cuz, Saturday, 12 September 2020 21:10 (three years ago) link

obvs it would be good for the bench to be deeper but damn if they don't seem to weather those minutes well. so young!

drama

Celtics postseason notes -- General:

Have been the best second-quarter team (+20.0 points per 100 possessions) in the postseason.

i love brad stevens but can the celtics maybe sign a backup coach who would take over for 3rd quarters and give stevens a rest?

fact checking cuz, Friday, 18 September 2020 01:39 (three years ago) link

its a total flip from the IT era where they would be down at the half every game and then catch up in the 3rd

ciderpress, Friday, 18 September 2020 02:02 (three years ago) link

game 3 was extremely pleasing to me

a big win for the national basketball association's boston "celtics"

methinks dababy doth bop shit too much (m bison), Monday, 21 September 2020 00:05 (three years ago) link

they tried really hard to lose there at the end, feel bad for em

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 21 September 2020 00:22 (three years ago) link

disagree w that. thought they played well when their backs were up against the wall in the last two minutes. fuckin love marcus smart even if he forgot to run the clock out :)

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 21 September 2020 07:38 (three years ago) link

With six minutes to go in the 4th, the Celtics are up 19 points. Over the next five minutes, the Heat go on a 21-5 run and the Celtics let the lead go to 5 in the last minute behind brown catching robinson in the face with an elbow for a flagrant. Marcus righted the ship at the end there but the Heat should never have gotten that close.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:03 (three years ago) link

right, but it didn't feel to me like they were tanking or letting their foot off the gas - they were battling (imo)

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:08 (three years ago) link

no, i's agree with that but i do remember some bad choices right at the end there... i'd have to look at the play-by-play again to clarify.
driving aggressively seemed to work; not sure if they caught miami off guard or if they've found the right tactic.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:24 (three years ago) link

they were running clock which they maybe started a lil early but it was working, then the flagrant made it dicey (fwiw i feel like when a guy plays defense with his face it should maybe not be a flagrant), if they wanted to keep their foot on the gas it wouldve produced a ton more possessions down the stretch which obvs increases variance, you run clock to reduce that, either approach can go wrong tho theres no 100% win and its very easy to fault the strategy when it does, when really usually the problem is often the execution, or just the other team playing really well

lag∞n, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:40 (three years ago) link

i hated that flagrant call. you have to be able to rotate the ball from side to side over your head in a ready to pass position. it's literally one of the most basic basketball moves.

call all destroyer, Monday, 21 September 2020 16:00 (three years ago) link

yeah the ref even said it was unnecessary contact but like it was necessary, feel like the league couldve prepared a lot better for instituting replay, you get one challenge but also if you roll around on the floor and hold your face you get more challenges

lag∞n, Monday, 21 September 2020 16:11 (three years ago) link

they couldve just looked at how the nfl realized they had no idea what a catch actually was to see what a huge can of worms they were opening

lag∞n, Monday, 21 September 2020 16:12 (three years ago) link

hollinger has a piece today saying the celtics are getting worn down by playing big minutes in a compressed schedule and its hurting them at the end of games, which is reasonable, the article contains this graph

lag∞n, Monday, 21 September 2020 19:24 (three years ago) link

on the bright side they get a couple extra days off and gordon hayward is back

lag∞n, Monday, 21 September 2020 19:28 (three years ago) link

i mean, yeah, the celtics have definitely used their starters for a shit-ton of minutes, and it doesn't seem sustainable, but the "holy moly" line in that chart is a little disingenuous considering that the celts have played two more games than the heat and three more than the raptors.

fact checking cuz, Monday, 21 September 2020 19:40 (three years ago) link

that said, even with hayward in the lineup, three players logged more than 40 minutes in game 3 on saturday and they were all celtics. so, yeah, there's good reason to worry.

well the minutes are adding up regardless of how many games theyre spread across, occurs to me in some ways its prob worse that theyre over more games cause it means they havent had any rest

lag∞n, Monday, 21 September 2020 19:51 (three years ago) link

coming off of a tough 7 game series that was played over 13 days definitely feels like a factor

With Gordon Hayward back, the Celtics' best-5 lineup was a +13 in less than 7 minutes in Game 3, an 11-point win.

18 total minutes during the regular season!

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 17:14 (three years ago) link

which i mean a. its a very small lineup theres not even really a power forward in it much less a center b. they didnt have that many games with all their guys healthy c. in the regular season youre trying more to stagger minutes and not tire your guys out playing against bigger guys d. the lineup doesnt make sense against all teams

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 17:17 (three years ago) link

BUT now none of that stuff really matters

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 17:17 (three years ago) link

still weird they didnt run it more tho

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 17:17 (three years ago) link

i didn't catch this:

The Celtics have played 12 consecutive games in these playoffs without the home team winning any of them. The streak included the last two games of Boston’s first-round sweep of Philadelphia, every game of the Celtics’ seven-round epic with Toronto in the second round and the first three games of the Eastern Conference finals against Miami. Boston’s second-round matchup with Toronto was the first in more than 600 best-of-seven series in N.B.A. playoff history in which the home team failed to win a single game.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 22 September 2020 22:29 (three years ago) link

sorry for the dim question but there is no 'home' team i thought?

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 22 September 2020 22:33 (three years ago) link

Not in any conventional sense of 'home team', but the NBA designates a home team for each game in the bubble and does the 'virtual fan' section via webcams, and pipes in appropriate crowd noises, music, and scoreboard messages to simulate a home game. but it's bunk.

two weeks pass...

https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/celtics/fouls-3-point-shooting-daniel-theis-has-room-grow-celtics

Theis racked up 219 personal fouls, the eighth-highest total in the entire league. That’s 5.5 fouls per 36 minutes of play, making him a threat to foul out each time he touched the floor. And he did foul out four times in the postseason, including once in 21 minutes, 34 seconds of court time during Boston’s season-ending loss to Miami.

I'm not entirely sure how you coach this away. Feels mostly like he was fearless under the hoop and contested better-known guys who got the call over and over. Maybe it's just that he needs another few years in the league to get more respect? Maybe he needs to put on more muscle so that he can stand his ground with less flailing?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 14 October 2020 17:06 (three years ago) link

theis definitely gets officiated like he's a nobody at times, but i think a lot of is just that as an undersized starting center there are still a bunch of matchups around the league that are going to result in very long nights. usually when i see him commit fouls i would call "bad" it's not a result of being too weak but more being a step too late on the contest. they ask him to do a lot in a thankless role on both ends of the court and to his credit he's more than happy to.

even if he were to cut down his foul rate, ideally he's not a guy you're playing more than like 28 minutes a night. i think they need to look at backup center again this offseason and find one more guy who is solid defensively in most matchups and can eat up some minutes.

Is Kevin McHale the only Trumpy NBA coach? Even George Karl is a never-trumper:

Less than 20 days to go.

Get out and VOTE today!

For Biden. For Hickenlooper in CO. For Bollier in KS. For Greenfield in Iowa.

For these strong candidates and others that are going to return leadership, clarity and unity to our great country!!
