Holy fucking shit what is this

Boring, Maryland, Friday, 11 September 2020 13:17 (three years ago) link

you can't appreciate that line properly until you've heard him "sing" it

how do i shot moon? (Noodle Vague), Friday, 11 September 2020 13:19 (three years ago) link

He should've given this one to Ronan Keating.

lmao

also, jfc at....all of this

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 11 September 2020 13:19 (three years ago) link

lawsuit deserves 2nd place so i went with that

billstevejim, Friday, 11 September 2020 14:00 (three years ago) link

this might be the single worst song I've ever heard and honestly I'm pretty impressed by it

frogbs, Friday, 11 September 2020 14:09 (three years ago) link

don't just read the lyrics baby you gotta listen to it, trust me

frogbs, Friday, 11 September 2020 14:09 (three years ago) link

jesus fucking christ

i'll pay my brother three dollars an hour to dig my burial ditch (ditch!)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 11 September 2020 14:23 (three years ago) link

that one got my vote lol

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 11 September 2020 14:25 (three years ago) link

same. had "here comes the lawsuit" and "slow ride by foghat" been one option though i would've voted for it

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 11 September 2020 14:27 (three years ago) link

it's the best kind of bad when you really have to wonder what was happening that allowed this to exist

billstevejim, Friday, 11 September 2020 14:40 (three years ago) link

important to note that Gregg Alexander got a second chance in the music biz and made the most out of it so if you're ever feeling down in the dumps no more lying well this is the truth

frogbs, Friday, 11 September 2020 14:41 (three years ago) link

Oh, it's the one on Stanley Son of Theodore. I must've always fast forwarded to Alison Moyet, unless I somehow forgot about this.

swing out sister: live in new donk city (geoffreyess), Friday, 11 September 2020 14:52 (three years ago) link

I'm noticing a theme in this dude's songs where he does lots of "ow yea c'mon baby whoa oh no" things

billstevejim, Friday, 11 September 2020 14:54 (three years ago) link

He was thematically consistent

billstevejim, Friday, 11 September 2020 14:54 (three years ago) link

music was a mistake

cat, Friday, 11 September 2020 15:17 (three years ago) link

oh who am I kidding, this is incredible

cat, Friday, 11 September 2020 15:18 (three years ago) link

oh that "50 women" line, holy shit

amazing to think this guy apparently got massive stage fright which is why he wore that bucket hat

frogbs, Friday, 11 September 2020 15:21 (three years ago) link

Not so amazing when you think about it, do u see?

ABBA O RLY? (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 September 2020 15:29 (three years ago) link

too much truth

ptah el dude (voodoo chili), Friday, 11 September 2020 15:30 (three years ago) link

Voted "I got 50 women..." but that was before I got to the end of the song where he breaks into Slow Ride. That made me laugh harder than I have in weeks, so thanks for that

J. Sam, Friday, 11 September 2020 15:35 (three years ago) link

this is just such a rich cornucopia

cat, Friday, 11 September 2020 15:42 (three years ago) link

I've definitely seen worse than this being repped in all seriousness on ILX.

billstevejim, Friday, 11 September 2020 17:00 (three years ago) link

Given the lawsuit line and his future in the New Radicals, there's obviously some self-awareness in here. But the fact that you can't pinpoint exactly how much is what makes it so weird for me

Thoia Thoing, Maryland (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 11 September 2020 17:11 (three years ago) link

How has Internet/meme culture not discovered this????

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 11 September 2020 22:03 (three years ago) link

He's bottled it and tried to ironically distance himself from the wacky lyrics and he's fucking fell in the gap very badly

He seems like enough of a dipshit to have actually cleared the Foghat sample but still done the lawsuit line imo

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Friday, 11 September 2020 22:24 (three years ago) link

What did I just witness

The little engine that choogled (hardcore dilettante), Saturday, 12 September 2020 00:45 (three years ago) link

idk Johnny I don't think anyone's watching this thinking "wow! can you believe this guy wrote a hit song 6 years later!"

frogbs, Saturday, 12 September 2020 02:12 (three years ago) link

I'm with Whiney and listening to it a second time (lol) he seems not entirely serious BUT! It was a single! From a major label in 1992! Which means the record company thought this could get radio/MTV play! And nothing about the video or the packaging/artwork of the single and the album it came from give an indication that this is given with a wink or meant to to be some kind of novelty song. If this had come out after, say, "Detachable Penis" or "Push th' Little Daisies" it might be different but 1992 college rock was all deadly serious.

Boring, Maryland, Saturday, 12 September 2020 02:55 (three years ago) link

BTW the album was called "Intoxifornication" lol.

Boring, Maryland, Saturday, 12 September 2020 02:56 (three years ago) link

rascal clobber (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 17:18 (three years ago) link

Holy shit, I started laughing before he even started singing. He sounds extremely constipated. This is an annoyingly huge chorus and ubiquity away from taking "What's Up" off the Mount Rushmore of musical shit.

No more lying / A wop-bom a loo-mop, this is the truth

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 19:56 (three years ago) link

omfg this is astonishingly awful

can't get over his look in the video, it's p hot and i wish i had the hair or the incredibly close shaving skills to pull it off, and at the same time it seems pretty blatantly clear that the video director figured "this song is godawful but if i play my cards right, i could market this clip to some spoof film that wants to parody Val Kilmer's performance in The Doors"

voted for the Holocaust line just over the homophobia line. even WITHOUT those it's a trainwreck --- come back, Silverchair and Noel Gallagher, all is forgiven.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 September 2020 12:20 (three years ago) link

seriously I think the only recent-ish ILM discovery i could compare this to is when Neanderthal made us all listen to "Planes"

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 September 2020 12:22 (three years ago) link

Please what is "Planes"?

chap, Thursday, 17 September 2020 13:52 (three years ago) link

I've always kind of loved You Get What You Give but The Truth is the awkwardness of the closing "rap" in the former blown up to song length.

James Gandolfini the Grey (PBKR), Thursday, 17 September 2020 14:01 (three years ago) link

This is better than You Get What You Give - less boring.

chap, Friday, 18 September 2020 14:10 (three years ago) link

feel like i can divide my life pretty cleanly into before i heard "the truth" and after

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 18 September 2020 14:52 (three years ago) link

Enjoying the completely superfluous Danielle Brisebois backing vocal that pops up on the 2nd chorus

Reckon I might be able to work up the courage to listen to "Smoking In Bed" next week

I saw my wife was logged into the joint Spotify at home, so I remotely played this song from my phone as a fun gift for her

regrettably due to poor 4g reception it took a while to load, by which time she had joined a work-related zoom call and couldn't figure out how to make it stop blaring out of her work computer
