hahahah I can totally envision the platonic ideal college town strip mall in which it is located too! ...

If you're concerned about the legit-ness of a Russian reissue, there was a Japanese one in 2012.

(I am not in that pic, it is of some members of this band & friends: https://www.discogs.com/artist/1786785-Blood-Farmers-2)

Sweet!
A couple of times in the 70s, in different towns, I lived a block or so from nice-priced, student-aimed record stores that sold brand-new radio promo albums for 99 cents (singles for less, but I didn't buy those alas). We could read a Rock-a-Rama shortie in Creem, for inst., then walk a few feet and there was the new noise a-glimmering, like as not. Didn't have to be obscure either---sometimes they would have the same thing up front, for a regular sale price, and in the 99 cent sector (which was not small).
Speaking of the Contortions etc. findability, I've still got Irresistable Impulse, the 2002 James Chance box, which has Buy, Off White, and uh, prob all the James anybody could need, at least as of '02. Dunno if he still gets royalties for any of that, but either way: https://www.gofundme.com/f/for-james-chance-and-judy-taylor

That one irregularly repeated bass note in Puerto Rican Ghost is so fucking good.

that show a few years ago at the Knockout in SF was one of my "top 10 shows ever"

"Dish It Out" is my fave Contortions song by a wide margin

Same. The 2014 ilm poll results where it tied "Helen Forsdale" seem right on.

Saw Chance play in NY 6 or 7 years and idk i know he's getting up there and not great healthwise but he was barely present onstage. He took a 10min pause in the middle of the set to call his girlfriend from the stage and tell her how much longer the show was going to go for and what time he expected he'd be home.

Per that gofundme link, they're both pretty bad off, healthwise and related financially.

dow, Thursday, 10 September 2020 21:39 (three years ago) link

Apparently kept playing long as he could and then some, because of needing whatever money for medical, like many older musicians going way back, maybe especially in jazz and r&b. Also, his late father supported him as best he could.

This sounds pretty brilliant IMO. (Had I been a paying patron, I might disagree.)

i saw him 5 years ago or so and he seemed barely able to make it onto the stage. As the gig progressed he loosened up to the point that 45 minutes in he leapt off the (very high) stage. it was a pretty incredible transformation.

i posted about the fundraiser for him and his partner on the contortions thread - good to see it posted here too.

We were annoyed at the time but knowing the fuller context of his difficulties over recent years it’s understandable. But also yeah it hindsight it’s pretty funny tbh.

Kinda reminds me of a standup comedian who used to come onstage with a cup of coffee and a cigarette and just stand there smoking and drinking his coffee and when the audience started to get itchy, he'd say, "Hey — when you get to work, do you start right away?"

one month passes...

I dunno. Universal owns Island. I do remember when the Lilith releases came out conventional wisdom was that they weren't legit, maybe there's something sketchy about Universal Russia, I don't know what the deal is. Or maybe people were just confused because Lilith is able to license from Universal when in the US and UK licensing form Universal was a huge pain and maybe people who'd try licensing it there had no success. I know I tried one reissue that would've dealt with Universal and it was a nightmare.

The liner notes are in Russian, seems suspicious. Might have something to do with trump

I saw Chance abt 16 yrs ago and a friend had the perfect description of the show "if you had a given me a tape of this show I would have thought it was amazing but I am here and I am watching him and I don't think it is very good"
