(also finding it amusing that nobody itt seems curious about how it sounds)

based on the art I'm confident this will be the first release where bloops outnumber bleeps

only thing I've heard since NTS was the Twitch stream (is that still going?) which sounded ... really, really good. so high hopes.

lukas, Thursday, 3 September 2020 16:03 (three years ago) link

i think it's going to be more blorpy this time around

Karl Malone, Thursday, 3 September 2020 16:06 (three years ago) link

i find it extremely hard to describe how music sounds, and even more so with...whatever music genre autechre fits in

Karl Malone, Thursday, 3 September 2020 16:06 (three years ago) link

Autechre is the name of the genre and the music can best be described as Autechre

Monte Scampino (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 3 September 2020 16:12 (three years ago) link

Autechre is more squelchy than anything

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 3 September 2020 16:15 (three years ago) link

xp

otm :)

i am looking forward to the more approachable length of the new one. i do very much support their (seeming) goal of wanting to design the ultimate quasi-generative, ever-changing infinite music machine, and the inevitable consolidation of the known universe into Autechre. Autechre contains multitudes.

but yes, at the same time i do enjoy sitting down with an album and listening from the first bleep to the last blorp

Karl Malone, Thursday, 3 September 2020 16:19 (three years ago) link

yeah Autechre albums take a bunch of listens to really wrap your head around anyway, with something like NTS Sessions or even elseq it's less "is the music good" and more "do I even have the time to get into this"

frogbs, Thursday, 3 September 2020 16:22 (three years ago) link

What if this is Autechre... having sobered up and going back to basics?! o_O

Monte Scampino (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 3 September 2020 16:23 (three years ago) link

this may be sacrilege but I think both those releases could've been edited down to a similar length as Exai and probably would've been better for it

frogbs, Thursday, 3 September 2020 16:23 (three years ago) link

Not sure if they'd be better, there is so much on NTS and Elseq I'd not want to lose... But yeah I'm all up for a 'normal length' Autechre album. See how they leave their 'mark' after their long excursions.

the use of the shape from the one-six sets makes me slightly nervous as they mostly left me cold, aside from a couple of short sections of awesomeness.

neith moon (ledge), Thursday, 3 September 2020 18:31 (three years ago) link

> Looking again at the cover, it's the two ae shapes twice - they are repeated, smaller, in light orange and white

which gave me an idea

(not quite right, needs a bit more tweaking, speeds and centres and stuff)

They need to make a lenticular special edition cover of that right away

I didn't mean to watch this whole thing but fuck it, it's sunday

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaJqZXR6444

I like how earnest this guy is and how he grows more effusive and animated as the countdown progresses and he starts talking about his favorite albums

don't agree with the rankings though

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 6 September 2020 16:27 (three years ago) link

He's not the most compelling presenter and I'm just waiting to hear him say "sonic cathedral of sound"; however I might just revisit their entire discography to hear some of the things he picks out, especially in tracks i'm not so keen on.

neith moon (ledge), Monday, 7 September 2020 09:33 (three years ago) link

oh no he just said 'chiastic' with a ch not k.

neith moon (ledge), Monday, 7 September 2020 09:36 (three years ago) link

try repeat-eye

Leighton Buzzword (dog latin), Monday, 7 September 2020 10:39 (three years ago) link

let those who have never mispronounced an autechre title cast the first stone

if anything bugs me about the video its the overuse of certain meaningless adjectives ("shimmering" comes to mind)

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 7 September 2020 11:30 (three years ago) link

only caught the first few minutes of the video(too late, tired), but he mentioned both the Melbourne and Dublin sets from 2018, which sound markedly different / more developed and fleshed out, compared to the rest of the 2016 "onesix" material. Those two are definite highlights of the most recent live material, the Melbourne one in particular. There's an unofficial live (audience) recording of a show in Tasmania (on youtube) from around the same time which is v similar to those two official digital releases. The material is more rhythmic and percussive than the bulk of the aerlier "onesix" versions. It's good. Hoping the new album is nothing like the NTS / live material of late.

okay, i can't hold it in any longer, but i've heard it now and all i can tell you is that it is indeed quite different to NTS

Leighton Buzzword (dog latin), Monday, 7 September 2020 14:01 (three years ago) link

woohoo!
and I was at the Tasmania show, it was pretty baffling to the casuals but a great thing to be inside of

tease!

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 7 September 2020 14:13 (three years ago) link

hey dog latin would you characterise "different" as "interesting new take" or "what the actual fuck this can't be the new record"? asking for a friend

assert (MatthewK), Wednesday, 9 September 2020 22:12 (three years ago) link

I've heard whispers that this has leaked but as I treat new Ae albums like a Latin Mass on Christmas Day and also because I fear potential fakery, I will be waiting patiently (but I certainly don't mind a few spoilers here, should there be any!)

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 9 September 2020 23:26 (three years ago) link

yep its on slsk but I'm gonna be good and wait for the record to arrive

frogbs, Thursday, 10 September 2020 02:29 (three years ago) link

I mean its probably a fake but still

frogbs, Thursday, 10 September 2020 02:34 (three years ago) link

Let me save you the bandwidth, it's a mashup of some coming-out radio talk show with odd beats. Not unlistenable but I was trolled pretty hard.

assert (MatthewK), Thursday, 10 September 2020 04:58 (three years ago) link

Ah this takes me back to the good old days of audiogalaxy'ing the "new" BoC lol

Monte Scampino (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 10 September 2020 09:11 (three years ago) link

yeah fake Ae leaks are sort of a tradition

frogbs, Thursday, 10 September 2020 13:30 (three years ago) link

I'm absolutely amazed that after all these years no other acts do this. Didn't Madonna leak a fake once? I'm old enough to remember De La Soul putting donkey noises on advances of "Buhloone Mindstate." But really any act, with literally minimal effort, could leak out some stupid thing with the same track list as the album, just to throw people off and make them wait for the real thing.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 September 2020 13:35 (three years ago) link

Ah yes, I recall lolling at Madonna's looped "what the fuck do you think you're doing?"

neith moon (ledge), Thursday, 10 September 2020 13:40 (three years ago) link

thought the fake leak of Daft Punk's Human After All was pretty clever up until it was revealed that it was the actual album

frogbs, Thursday, 10 September 2020 13:42 (three years ago) link

lol

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 September 2020 13:42 (three years ago) link

The leak of Built to Spill's You In Reverse had "WHO IS MIKE JONES" tags like every 30 seconds, was hilarious

J. Sam, Thursday, 10 September 2020 13:48 (three years ago) link

there was a band that actually did record an entire fake version of an album for this purpose but I can't remember who it was. I'm gonna say, I dunno...Ben Folds

frogbs, Thursday, 10 September 2020 13:59 (three years ago) link

Didn't Akron/Family also do something like that at some point?

guster, they recorded a version of keep it together where all the vocals are replaced with meows

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 10 September 2020 14:35 (three years ago) link

the CD (which comes with a download) is actually more expensive than just the download, LOL

frogbs, Thursday, 10 September 2020 20:31 (three years ago) link

...? manufacturing and transporting a physical item across the planet does actually cost more to do

erratic wolf angular guitarist (sic), Thursday, 10 September 2020 20:46 (three years ago) link

assuming frogbs meant price before shipping

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 10 September 2020 22:12 (three years ago) link

Lol I wrote that wrong because my brain is broken

The download is 11 pounds
The CD is 10. And comes with a download

But yeah you’d have to pay shipping

Still

frogbs, Thursday, 10 September 2020 22:49 (three years ago) link

Hoping to snag both records in person somewhere locally when they come out. Pre-order shipping prices just for this one is a bit steep. Limited edition shit like the NTS box set is one thing, though.

octobeard, Friday, 11 September 2020 01:04 (three years ago) link

Yeah, I'll buy a physical CD of this, but not direct from them.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 11 September 2020 01:24 (three years ago) link

Is it me or have the live sets disappeared from their website? autechre.bleepstores.com now redirects to autechre.warp.net and they're not listed there (nor on their Bandcamp page).

EvR, Friday, 11 September 2020 07:47 (three years ago) link

if i click on 'releases' on https://autechre.warp.net/ i can see them.

neith moon (ledge), Friday, 11 September 2020 07:52 (three years ago) link
