HANNIBAL on NBC seems amazing and therefore deserves it's own thread!

people i've talked to have been surprised to learn that bryan fuller did both hannibal and pushing daisies, but the guy loves a artfully arranged corpse.

i mentioned this somewhere upthread but fuller is obsessed with both death and food - Dead Like Me (death + waffles), Pushing Daisies (death + pies), Hannibal (death + meat(ish))

(theremin is in the books) (some of the books are bad so this isn't an excuse really)

Why didn’t I start watching this sooner? I said on zoom that the beauty of this show is that it’s everything you hear it is, only more so, and that’s still right. Unlike others upthread (I am slowly reading the posts at the time the episodes aired up to the point I’m at) I don’t mind the monster of the week episodes because the focal point has always been the relationships between Will and everyone else.

I did find a point where I couldn’t look at the screen - acupuncturist and the needle with the eye - but other than that have been able to handle it ok. My friend has a theory about Hannibal’s ties - that the ties being just that bit too thick and the design being just that bit off reflects how Hannibal himself fits in his environment.

Last episode ends with Dr Katz finding Hannibal’s basement and RIP :( I don’t really get why the Feds wouldn’t find the murder basement on a deliberate search when she found it entirely accidentally? But yeah, that one hurt. I love every time Hannibal is planning to kill someone but it doesn’t mean I like it (am I watching this show wrong?)

Also sorry but it has to be said: Mads’s face fascinates me, it has that sort of dead-eyed fishy quality but he’s shockingly hot and I was really into the way he moves during his fight scene at the start of s2

I tried to enjoy this show but it is just a series of arbitrary one-on-one conversations in different locations that make no sense spacially or temporally and it's like, pretty much all of Hannibla's plans would've fallen to pieces if people would just pick up the phone and call each other once in a while instead of just accepting x = x

I watched S01 and was like "I'm not continuing on with this garbage" and skipped ahead to the season finale of S02 (which I'd heard was wonderful) and it was fine

I just finished Hill House TV series and it was so so so much more enjoyable in every way

yeah I loved a lot of Hill House (save for the trash ending) but totally different ballgames

could not deal with Hill House, bailed halfway through, but love Hannibal too much.

clearly the only answer is the haunting of hannibal house

I think it did not help that I disliked almost all the actors in Hill House and had a hard time telling some apart.

more derail but just wanna say I love crime series and my favorite of the last decade remains The Fall, and there is the Gillian link!

I watched the first series of The Fall and liked it well enough, but the idea of seeing that plot / those characters keep it up for multiple series made me feel too queasy to keep watching.

The evidence will lead away from the Ripper = it must be Chilton, who all the evidence points towards! Jesus Christ, I was so angry even though I hated Chilton and wanted Hannibal to eat him.

Katz’s murder was gruesome even for this show. I enjoyed, if that’s not the wrong word, Hannibal serving Gideon his own leg and getting him to eat it. You feel that now Will is out of jail and on the move again, that they will close in on him (as the opening scene suggests) but who else will die before then?

Whole thing with Alana is deeply unnerving, and her continuing to be completely wrong suggests a sticky end, that Hannibal will try to pin on Will. Hope I’m wrong about this!

Also, talking to my Hannibal friend and she was like ”you got that Hannibal is fucking Alana to get at Will, right? She’s the middle woman.” And it’s so true. (Wow, this show).

Ok, end of s2e10 and what the fuck? After an earlier imagined sex scene where the two share Alana, then Will and Hannibal cook and eat human flesh together? Over candlelight and romantic music? What the fuck?!?!

Obviously, I enjoy the show more than ever.

Ortolan. This scene fucked me up. The intrinsic awfulness of the dish, the fact that Hannibal deliberately does his atrocity without his face covered - and I have mentioned numerous times watching this, the fact that he doesn’t cover his face when he kills either - and perhaps most wtf of all, the scene has a severe undercurrent of sex. Come on, the focus on lips, lingering glances, throats moving? Totally a freakish sex scene.

The Vergers: as awful as I’d remembered them. Margot’s surgery honestly broke my heart, I’ve really liked her these past few episodes. Mason’s sticky...pause... was as disturbing as it was in the books. Quite sure I’ll be seeing some of those images on the insides of my eyelids when I have nightmares.

Great to see Bedelia back again, Anderson does a wonderful job of phrasing her words slowly and deliberately as though each one causes her pain. She’s such an interesting character.

Will dreaming twice about Hannibal tied up at his mercy...mate, you need to talk to someone about that.

Mads is SO great when he’s not speaking; the little flicker of his eyes, the slightest purse of the lips, even the way he moves. He was made for this role.

The end of s2 finale -!!!!! I haven’t quite processed it yet, apart from fucking hell, FUCK-ING HELL.
