i mean...it was never advertised as anything other than basically a blessed madonna x dua lipa DJ-kicks?

personally i think it's really fun! i was very underwhelmed by the madonna & missy remix, but it sounds a little less drab in context and there are many other entertaining moments. "boys will be boys" finally making sense as a samba workout! jayda-g doing "cool"! mr fingers elevating "hallucinate"!

not sure why it's being retconned into this era but i liked the new take on "kiss and make up" as well.

i haven't heard it yet but I was under the impression that BM was playing curator for these remixes by other people. def changes things if it's a mix.

Roz, Friday, 28 August 2020 06:37 (three years ago) link

it's both as far as I understand it?

The tracks have been remixed by the artists listed but it's been assembled as a mix?

Number None, Friday, 28 August 2020 07:11 (three years ago) link

yes, that's correct (sorry if I implied otherwise). The Blessed Madonna has taken the various remixes and turned them into what's more or less a continuous ~50 min mix

monotony, Friday, 28 August 2020 07:51 (three years ago) link

this thread has me doubting reality

J0rdan S., Friday, 28 August 2020 07:52 (three years ago) link

anyway this is a much cooler idea than a normal remix album

J0rdan S., Friday, 28 August 2020 07:52 (three years ago) link

xpost yep I'm listening now and that's what it is - sorry, was thrown off by jed's "nobody's remixed anything" post upthread.

I don't know about this... there are some good moments but the mix feels rushed, there's barely any time for the tracks to breathe. both the Mr. Fingers and Paul Woolford remixes need to be wayyyy longer than two minutes wtf.

Faves so far: BM's own remix of Love is Religion (is that a new track?) might be the best thing here, so joyful. also liked the Jayda G and "Boys will be Boys" remixes, and the Dimitri from Paris edit - is it time for the jamiroquai re-appraisal yet?

Worst: the Mark Ronson remix as mentioned above (Gwen Stefani doesn't have the chops to carry that huge "Physical" chorus at all, yikes) and the JLC remix which is just hilariously lazy.

Roz, Friday, 28 August 2020 07:57 (three years ago) link

need the unmixed versions of these ... could barely make out the mr fingers track

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Friday, 28 August 2020 08:16 (three years ago) link

xp to Roz - the Paul Woolford remix is available as a full version (this came out around the time "Hallucinate" was released as a single): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VqeJGcW680

ooh thanks!

Roz, Friday, 28 August 2020 10:01 (three years ago) link

Kids all over twitter saying how awful this is. One 20-second snippet of the MAW one has them generally freaking out underneath 'it sounds like a load of random computer game noises!'.

There are some pretty ancient names involved, you'd think remix culture would've moved on a bit in the last three or four decades.

piscesx, Friday, 28 August 2020 10:20 (three years ago) link

.. although by contrast someone on PJ claims 'the vibe makes me wanna pour a babycham and do a line off someone’s D' so, horses for courses.

piscesx, Friday, 28 August 2020 10:35 (three years ago) link

I don’t blame the kids - given how rushed this feels, there’s hardly anything for them to latch on to and the lack of name recognition doesn’t help. Like aside from Missy and Madonna, they prob don’t know anyone else than maybe Yaeji and Mark Ronson (the latter’s is the one they all seem to like so go figure).

Roz, Friday, 28 August 2020 11:09 (three years ago) link

I've got as far as the Boys Will Be Boys remix and everyone concerned is half-arsing this so transparently.

Matt DC, Friday, 28 August 2020 12:20 (three years ago) link

lol even the Moodymann mix is astonishingly half-baked

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 28 August 2020 13:06 (three years ago) link

That's one of the better ones IMO, the Horse Meat Disco one is OK and the Paul Woolford is good, but that's about it. Larry Heard barely even bothered to get out of bed.

I suppose we should have looked at the track listing and seen 'annoying Girl Talk album' in our collective future but we live and learn.

Matt DC, Friday, 28 August 2020 13:12 (three years ago) link

Larry Heard barely even bothered to get out of bed.

this is probably because he wasn't one of the remixers

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 28 August 2020 13:19 (three years ago) link

Track 10 is him, right?

Matt DC, Friday, 28 August 2020 13:25 (three years ago) link

oh lol whoops i got my signals crossed you're right

tbf no one is at 100% working from home

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 28 August 2020 13:34 (three years ago) link

The only part of the part listed as Larry Heard is a snippet of The Sun Can’t Compare with Dua vox laid over it.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Friday, 28 August 2020 14:02 (three years ago) link

So I’m not sure he’s actually had anything to do with this.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Friday, 28 August 2020 14:03 (three years ago) link

There's the sample and there's also the preceding remix which is listed as Mr Fingers.

Matt DC, Friday, 28 August 2020 14:06 (three years ago) link

Ok I can’t check at the moment but doesn’t it go blessed/madonna/missy then Gwen Stefani then 10-20 seconds of next to nothing then the sun can’t compare then Paul woolford? So is the Larry heard mix the 10-20 seconds of nothing?

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Friday, 28 August 2020 14:23 (three years ago) link

lol yeah I think it probably is. It’s possible there is actually a Mr Fingers remix that hasn’t really made the album in any audible form.

Tim F, Friday, 28 August 2020 15:43 (three years ago) link

wow ok this is all very weird!

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Friday, 28 August 2020 15:52 (three years ago) link

basically it sounds like they rushed an unfinished master onto spotify a couple weeks early or some shit

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 28 August 2020 16:00 (three years ago) link

Why is there a model of a West Highland Terrier on the cover?

Matt DC, Friday, 28 August 2020 16:01 (three years ago) link

I really like the two new songs (“Love Is Religion” and especially “That Kind Of Woman”), both full-length tracks that would have fitted on a deluxe edition of the original album. Also wish there was much more of the MAW remix of “Pretty Please”.

Hoo boy, I’m only halfway through it but I think I can safely say that Club Future Nostalgia is terrible. Whoever said upthread that it sounded like everyone was half-assing it is otm. Or maybe it’s just that this “Blessed Madonna” wanker has no talent.

The “Live in LA” remix of “Don’t Start Now” is the only good Dua Lipa remix and even that isn’t as good as the original. I’ll stick with the original Future Nostalgia album thank you very much.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 9 September 2020 19:23 (three years ago) link

Unmixed version out today

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 11 September 2020 16:37 (three years ago) link

these sound pretty good! except the paul woolford, blech - his piano house vocal "anthems" have been circling the drain for a few years now imo. kaytranada remix does a nice thing with the chorus.

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Friday, 11 September 2020 16:51 (three years ago) link

Mr Fingers mix is 8 minutes complete (whew). Nothing special or anything but its nice and chilled.

Spotify has all the tracks only as individual releases. Make yr own album? OK I will.

Jeff W, Friday, 11 September 2020 19:28 (three years ago) link

Good grief this is a huge disappointment. I wasn't even that wild about the actual album this is based on but it had some great moments. Imagine thinking what Physical needed was to be slowed down and have all of its energy and grandiosity sucked out of it

boxedjoy, Sunday, 13 September 2020 16:52 (three years ago) link

I really admire that instead of reaching for the obvious names like Kygo/Diplo/Skrillex this exists and will introduce a generation of listeners to names like Masters At Work and Mr Fingers... But if this was my introduction to classic seminal names like those I doubt I would bother investigating any further, this feels like such a wasted opportunity

Heard the DaBaby version on the radio today and it fucking KILLED

bunny slopes, Saturday, 3 October 2020 07:22 (three years ago) link

Don't have any desire at all to re-listen to the other remixes but "Love is Religion" is just soo good. Is the original available anywhere? Do we know if it's different from the Blessed Madonna's remix or why it was left off the record?

Number None, Wednesday, 14 October 2020 08:27 (three years ago) link

thank you!

OK I can kinda see why it was left off the album - it’s more nostalgia than future nostalgia I guess ha. The remix solves that problem by leaning into the Madonna vibes and turning it into a straightforward pop-house track.

Roz, Wednesday, 14 October 2020 10:58 (three years ago) link

One of my kids told me about a guy on Tik Tok (probably) who pretends to be her brother, Duo Lipa. I think that's pretty funny.

didn't see this collaboration coming - it's very nice:
