I think that’s a wrap for hoops today

one has to assume bron is gonna take a big lead on this afa being a voice for the players

BREAKING:
CNN has learned that all of tonight’s NBA games have been postponed.

Fuckin' A! I don't know what will come of it but glad to see players taking a stronger stand. Good luck to the bucks in their attempts to put pressure on the AG.

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 26 August 2020 21:00 (three years ago) link

The NBA collective bargaining agreement bans strikes, which means the Bucks are breaking their own contract to stop playing in protest of police violence. (But this is your reminder that there aren't really illegal strikes, just unsuccessful ones.) https://t.co/c2g07wXspx pic.twitter.com/4MmNSb8bJX

I'm gonna make a wild prediction that Lebron will not play tonight

frogbs, Wednesday, 26 August 2020 21:05 (three years ago) link

Question is no longer if players are prepared to boycott one game — that’s happened. It’s how many they will. There have been discussions amongst several teams, notably Toronto, about going home.

I think this is historically unprecedented? Has there ever been a scheduled game in american professional sports that was bilaterally cancelled by the players? Has there ever been a scheduled game in american professional sports that has been canceled due to political reasons short of war?

the warriors and clippers were going to protest a playoff game after the sterling tapes leaked but the league forced him out before it came to that. this case is unique bcuz the issue transcends the league entirely

Brewers players are meeting in 10 minutes to discuss the status of their game against the Reds tonight.

leagues all "weve postponed the games" lol

All games are postponed, and Game 5 of each series will be rescheduled, NBA says.

sincerely doubt nfl players have the pull for something like this but if things start dominoing who knows

so... this is truly unprecedented then? I'm asking the question; I'm not absolutely positive this has never happened before in America! Certainly there have been international boycotts but I believe this might be the first domestic one.

Would be great if it hit MLB... NHL seems an unlikely step but hey.

kenny smith walked off the tnt set in solidarity with the players

sknybrg, Wednesday, 26 August 2020 22:45 (three years ago) link

Would be nice to see a well deserved apology from the idiot talking heads on ESPN, twitter, and the like who had the nerve to shit on guys like Kyrie and Avery Bradley for sitting out right from the start on baseless claims of "BUT IT WON'T DO ANYTHINGGGGGGGG"... but that's demanding a bit too much from lowlifes who had no class or self awareness to begin with.

Would be absolutely awesome and insane if players actually did follow their lead and just went home straight up; would certainly put Silver and the NBA's supposed "commitment to social justice" to the test in the biggest possible way. Listening to the pain in George Hill and Siakam's voices when they were ruminating on why they came in the first place tells me it's more than a remote possibility; these guys are justifiably sick and tired of this shit.

Sabre of Paradise (trevor phillips), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 23:03 (three years ago) link

Thoughts from @mcuban on the boycotts and whether he’d support his team taking that action.

“Of course I would support my team. A lot of things in life are more important than basketball. And I’ll support action items nba players put in place to try to effect change.”

And now the Lakers and the Portland Trailblazers will not be playing their game tonight. Let's get our terminology on point: that would be a "double-wildcat-political-strike for racial justice."

Sources: The Lakers and Clippers have voted to boycott the NBA season. Most other teams voted to continue. LeBron James has exited the meeting.

Clay, Thursday, 27 August 2020 02:46 (three years ago) link

Sources: Miami's Udonis Haslem spoke and essentially told everyone in room that -- without Lakers and Clippers, how will season continue?

LeBron James walked out. Rest of Lakers and Clippers exited behind him.

damn it's happening. I support whatever they want to do tbh

k3vin k., Thursday, 27 August 2020 02:50 (three years ago) link

yeah hard to blame them for not wanting to go on what with the world sucking and falling apart, i will miss the old basketball ring tho, who knows maybe they can work it out with the owners and whatnot

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 August 2020 02:51 (three years ago) link

i support them and today/tomorrow are not good days to be playing basketball, that said i really hope something gets worked out because the same owners who are releasing bland supportive statements to the media will not be nearly so charitable if the season actually ends.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 August 2020 02:54 (three years ago) link

What a year. Props to the players for sticking to it. Hopefully nfl follows suit and then the rest of the country

Spottie, Thursday, 27 August 2020 02:58 (three years ago) link

yeah if theyre interested in having leverage then keeping the possibility of playing on the table is the way to go, if they just dont want to play then they dont want to play xp

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 August 2020 02:58 (three years ago) link

i mean it does sound like bron is trying to make something happen

Sources: Every team besides Lakers and Clippers voted to continue playing. LeBron James said in meeting he want owners to be more involved/take action.

The Clippers and Lakers voting on perhaps not continuing with the season was considered more of a polling, than a final vote, sources tell ESPN. The resumption of the playoffs remains still up in the air.
